Western Limes Trail (E2) from Michelstadt-Vielbrunn to Hesselbach

After conquering France, the Romans advanced across the Rhine. The Odenwald Limes was built to secure the route between the Main and Neckar rivers, which were considered natural borders. This border wall, built around 85 AD, was intended to protect the Roman province of Germania Superior.
The second stage of your hike takes you along the former border line from Michelstadt-Vielbrunn to Hesselbach.
During this scenically and culturally enriching tour, you will pass the remains of Roman watchtowers, forts (troop quarters), bathing facilities and border fortifications. Informative boards point out the sights and provide insights into life in the former border region.

Description of the walk

Start: The starting point is the "Römerstraße" bus stop in Michelstadt-Vielbrunn.
Getting

(S) From the bus stop, walk a few metres uphill and then turn left into Faltersweg.

Follow this road out of the village and keep to the right. At the next fork, there are two benches and a wooden signpost. Here, turn left towards Würzberg. Follow the paved road until you reach a fork to the right. Turn right and walk straight ahead along the forest path until you reach the L3349.

(1) Cross this road with caution, walk a few metres further on the other side and you will come to the information board for guard post WP 10/17.

Take the same route back, i.e. cross the L3349 again and then immediately turn right onto a narrow path.

Follow this narrow, difficult-to-see path, which is well marked with a green "L", until you reach a T-junction. Turn right here, pass a barrier and you will reach the L3349 again. Walk along this road to the left.

(2) Then you will pass the information board for the no longer existing Limesturm WP 10/18. A few metres further on, leave the country road to the left and continue on a forest path.

(3) You will pass the Hasenstabsweidenbrunnen fountain and turn right shortly afterwards. Continue straight ahead for now. You will reach a paved path and turn left towards the Gut Sansenhof golf course.

(4) Shortly after the low boundary stone on the right with the number 278, turn right into the "Talweg" and pass another barrier.

You will reach a crossroads with a wooden signpost, where you turn right towards Eulbach. A little later, you will reach another crossroads with a raised hide, where you turn left.

Continue straight ahead until you reach the B47 federal road. Cross this road with caution and turn left onto a narrow path immediately before the gate on the other side.

At the end of the path, turn right and then right again at the next T-junction.

You will come out of the forest and keep to the right. The gravel path turns into a paved road ("Mangelsbach"). Follow this road towards "Römerbad".

A narrow path branches off to the right from the asphalt road. It is almost impossible to see. As a reference point, you can use the bus stop at the end of the road and count back from there along the lampposts. The turn-off is approximately halfway between the second and third lampposts.

(5) Follow this overgrown path to reach guard post WP 10/22.

Continue along this path until you reach the K45 district road. Cross this road with caution, walk onto the wide forest path on the other side and pass another barrier.

(6) You will come to a crossroads with a bench. Here, turn left towards Würzberg. In Würzberg, turn right into Hesselbacher Straße. First, you will pass the VfR Würzberg sports field and then the cemetery.

(7) You will then pass the Adlerschlag hiking car park, where you can take a break.

After a while, you will come to a crossroads with a signpost. Continue straight ahead towards the animal shelter, Römerbad and Hesselbach. After the last building, a narrow path branches off to the left.

(8) Follow this path until you reach the reconstructed remains of the Limes tower WP 10/25. Walk back in an arc to Hesselbacher Straße and continue to the left.

(9) After a while, you will reach the Würzburg numerus fort with a partially reconstructed Roman bath and plenty of information boards about the fort and the bath. There is also a small shelter and several benches where you can take a break.

Continue towards Hesselbach. You will come to a paved road ("Hohe Straße"), which you follow to the right towards Hesselbach and Roman watchtower 10/30.

(10) After what feels like an eternity on this road, you will come to an information board on the left-hand side about the Limes Tower WP 10/28. Continue along the road until you reach a car park (on the right) and a fork in the road leading into a forest path (on the left). Turn left here, pass a barrier and walk slightly downhill.

After a while, you will come to a crossroads (there is a sign for "Wasserschutzgebiet" on the right). Turn right here. Follow the path until you come to a fork and keep to the right. At the next crossroads, turn right. The path climbs slightly again. You will come back to the asphalt road and cross it.

(11) Continue straight ahead to the Limesanlage Wachtposten 10/30. Here there is more to see (and read). You can examine reconstructions of a palisade, the foundations of a wooden watchtower and a stone watchtower. This site is considered the best preserved along the Odenwald Limes.

Continue through the gate, and after a while the forest path turns into a gravel forest road. At the next fork, turn left. After a few metres, you will pass a small rest hut and then see a signpost. Turn right here and continue towards Hesselbach.

You will now share your path with the Nibelungensteig for a short distance. After a while, you will come out of the forest and arrive at a T-junction. Here, you will leave the Nibelungensteig again and turn left onto the asphalt path. The path climbs slightly. At the first fork, keep left and you will come to a crossroads further up.

(12) On the right-hand side, there is an information board about the Numerus Castle in Hesselbach.

(E) Continue along the path, which curves slightly to the right, past the still recognisable ramparts of the Numerus Castell and to the door of the country inn "Zum Grünen Baum", your destination for today.
