Western Limes Trail (E1) from Obernburg to Michelstadt-Vielbrunn

After conquering France, the Romans advanced across the Rhine. The Odenwald Limes was built to secure the route between the Main and Neckar rivers, which were considered natural borders. This border wall, built around 85 AD, was intended to protect the Roman province of Germania Superior.
The first stage of your hike takes you along the former border line from Obernburg on the sunny Main to Michelstadt-Vielbrunn.
During this scenically and culturally enriching tour, you will pass the remains of Roman watchtowers, forts (troop quarters), bathing facilities and border fortifications. Informative boards point out the sights and provide insights into life in the former border region.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: On the Western Limes Trail

Description of the walk

Start: The starting point for your tour is the Roman Museum in Obernburg.
Arrival by public transport - www.bahn.de, Obernburg-Elsenfeld stop.

Note: If you arrive on the day of the tour, you will start at Elsenfeld station. From the station, follow the (bicycle) signs to Obernburg Zentrum. After crossing the Main River, turn sharp left at the sculpture of the goose girl into Mainstraße and, after the hotel "Zum Karpfen", turn right into Untere Wallstraße. Follow this road until you reach the Roman Museum.

(S) With your back to the museum, turn right and then immediately left at the next junction towards "Mainanlagen". Go under the B469 and continue straight ahead to the banks of the Main. There, turn right.

Walk along the Main, your path will curve to the right and before the underpass under the B469, turn left and walk along Ziegelhüttenweg, past the fairground and the associated car parks.

Follow the paved path until you reach a fork. Turn left there. A little later, you will cross the Mümling river and shortly afterwards, turn right again behind the sign "Auf Wiedersehen in Obernburg" (See you again in Obernburg).

You will come back to the Mümling, pass under the B469 and follow the path to the left. You will pass the Obernburg waterworks and take the second path on the left at the next crossroads towards Waldhaus ("Waldhausstraße"). From here, the path goes uphill.

(1) You will reach a signpost. Opposite, somewhat hidden, there is a shelter and a table with two benches. Continue along the paved path, which leads you straight into the forest.

(2) You will come to a transmission mast, where you turn right towards the foundations of a Roman mountain sanctuary. After a few metres, turn left onto a narrow path (orientation: signpost Gelbe 3).

(3) You will reach the foundations and now have two options: either go back the same way, turn right at the transmission mast and walk straight ahead towards the forest house, or stay on the narrow path and treat yourself to this little adventure.

(4) Whichever way you go, both paths meet again at the Waldhaus and continue straight ahead. After what feels like an eternity, you will come to a fork in the path and keep left ("Haberichweg").

(5) The wide path leads you to the edge of the forest, where you will also see a signpost. Walk straight ahead into the field, keep half right at the next crossroads and turn right at the next T-junction.

(6) You will reach the first Limes watchtower (WP 10/6), or rather the information board about it. There is nothing to see.

(7) A little later, you will reach the "Runder Stein" car park. Here, too, there is an information board and a round stone signpost. Cross the L3259 with caution and walk straight ahead along the road on the other side. In the right-hand bend, turn left towards SV OG Lützelbach / Limeswanderweg.

(8) Shortly afterwards, you will reach the next information board for another Limes watchtower (WP 10/7). Here there is also a table with a bench and a "distance star". Until the early 1960s, there was a lighthouse here that served as a flight path signal beacon.

Continue straight ahead and back into the forest. You will pass the clubhouse of the OV SG Lützelbach and after a while you will come out into an open field.

(9) There you can already see a reconstruction of the Limes palisade and shortly afterwards you reach the Lützelbach numerus fort.

From here, continue straight ahead for a short distance and turn left at the first fork. Immediately afterwards, a sign points to "Zur Turmstelle 10/8" (to tower site 10/8). Here, turn right onto the narrow path.

(10) The narrow path leads you to another watchtower (WP 10/8). Here you have the opportunity to walk around the entire excavation site. Diagonally opposite the information board, there is also a somewhat hidden shelter. Then continue along the narrow path.

(11) You will walk towards a crossroads and pass the highest point of the municipality of Lützel-Wiebelsbach at 374 metres.

(12) Continue straight ahead and you will reach the information board for the Limes Tower WP 10/9. Shortly afterwards, the path ends at a gravel forest road. Turn left here.

(13) You pass the football pitch of KSV Haingrund e.V. Opposite the sports club is an excavation site of the small fort "Auf der Windlücke".

You will reach the L3349 and see the junction with the L3106 on your right. Cross this with caution, walk one or two metres along the gravel path on the other side and then turn left onto a narrow forest path.

(14) You will come to another information board for the Limes tower WP 10/10. Continue straight ahead on the forest path and turn left at the first fork.

After a while, you will come to a fork in the path and take the second path on the right (follow the green L of the Limesweg). You are now walking parallel to the L3349.

(15) You will come to another information board, this time for the watchtower WP 10/11. The foundations of the stone watchtower have been reconstructed here, giving you an impression of the dimensions of the structure. Shortly afterwards, you will cross a gravel path, walk towards the fence opposite and turn left at the fence.

After a while, you will reach the entrance to the former military site, turn left, cross the L3349 with caution and continue walking to the right on the other side. Continue walking parallel to the L3349.

(16) After a while, you will reach the information board for watchtower WP 10/12. Continue straight ahead until you cross the L3349 again. On the other side, turn left at the car park and you will reach the information boards for the Hainhaus numerus castrum.

(17) Opposite the boards is a car park surrounded by a beech hedge. Your route continues in the rear right-hand corner of this car park. Continue parallel to the L3349 until you reach a T-junction.

(18) Opposite, you can walk a few metres into the forest and you will reach the information board for the WP 10/14 watchtower. Walk back a few metres to the main path, turn right and cross the L3349 again. On the other side, turn right after a few metres.

You will come out of the forest and continue straight ahead along the field until you reach a road. Turn right here. In the next left-hand bend, turn right onto the asphalt road.

(19) Walk towards the fully restored Limes watchtower WP 10/15. The many information boards explain the architecture of the building, among other things.

Walk back along the same path and keep right towards Vielbrunn. After the town sign, your path joins the "Römerstraße". Follow this until you reach the "Ohrnbachtalstraße"

(E). On your right, you will see the "Römerstraße" bus stop, your destination for this stage.
