Start from Place Saint-Sernin, with your back to the basilica.
(S/E) Go straight ahead along the Musée Saint-Raymond (admission fee) on Rue Émile Cartailhac before turning left onto Rue des Lois. Take the second street on the right (Rue du Collège de Foix). Tour des Cordeliers on the right.
Then take Rue Antoine Deville to the right until you reach a small intersection. Hôtel de Neuville is on the left at no. 23.
(1) Turn left onto Rue Valade towards Place Saint-Pierre. Saint-Pierre des Chartreux Church is on the right at no. 21. Continue straight ahead, cross Place Saint-Pierre, then take the Pont Saint-Pierre bridge over the Garonne River to reach the Saint-Cyprien district.
Saint-Cyprien district
(2) Continue straight ahead, passing the Hôpital de la Grave and its dome, before turning right into the hospital grounds via a pedestrian entrance. You can visit the Chapelle de la Grave for a fee.
Continue along this path, which leads through a passage in the medieval ramparts to Raymond VI Park. Exit last on the right and you will come to the Garonne. Take the footbridge over the river, which leads to the quay and Port Viguerie.
(3) Leave the port and turn left onto Rue Viguerie. Then turn right onto Grande-Rue Saint-Nicolas. Saint-Nicolas Church is on the right. Continue straight ahead on Rue Réclusane, then turn left onto Rue de l'Ouest, a small pedestrian street. You will arrive at Place Saint-Cyprien. Take Rue de la République on the left, a major road that leads back to the Garonne at Pont Neuf, which you will take to return to the right bank of the river. On the left is the Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Jacques hospital and on the right is the Galerie du Château d'Eau (admission fee).
(4) As soon as you leave the bridge, turn left towards Place de la Daurade. Walk alongside the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Daurade (you can enter on the left-hand side) then turn right behind it into Rue de la Daurade. You will come to Rue Peyrolières, turn right, then take Rue de l'Écharpe on the left before reaching the main road of Rue de Metz. On the left is the Hôtel d'Assézat, home to the Bemberg Foundation (admission fee).
Carmes and Saint-Étienne district
(5) Walk up Rue de Metz a little to the left and then turn right onto Rue des Paradoux. Continue straight ahead until you reach Notre-Dame de la Dalbade. Turn right to pass in front of the church entrance (you can enter), then continue straight ahead on Rue de la Dalbade. Continue straight ahead (Hôtel de Pierre on the right at no. 25) until you reach Place du Salin.
(6) Turn left towards the end of Place du Salin, then walk along the courthouse to take Rue des Fleurs. This street curves to the left along the Église du Gésu. Continue along Rue Antoine Darquier (many mansions) before reaching Grande-rue Nazareth, which you will take to the right. Turn left onto Rue Philippe Féral, then right onto the main road, Rue du Languedoc, and continue to the Carmes covered market. You can climb two staircases to the top floor of the car park above the market to enjoy a magnificent view of the city and, on a clear day, the Pyrenees.
(7) Turn right onto Rue José Félix (Hôtel du Vieux-Raisin) then continue along the narrow Rue d'Aussargues, enclosed by the walls of the mansions. Turn left onto Rue Mage (Hôtel d'Espie on the left) and, once you reach Place Mage, turn right onto the magnificent Rue Merlane, which leads to Rue Pierre de Fermat. Turn right onto the latter, cross the charming Place Sainte-Scarbes and then take the second street on the left (Rue Vélane).
(8) Turn left onto Rue Montoulieu-Vélane, then left again onto Rue Ninau, lined with mansions. (Before turning left onto Rue Ninau, you can make a quick detour to see the Palais Niel). Back at Place Sainte-Scarbes, turn right onto Rue Saint-Jacques, then left onto Rue Saint-Anne. Then turn left, walking alongside Saint-Étienne Cathedral, then continue across the square of the same name and take Rue Croix-Baragnon until you return to Rue du Languedoc (Consular Palace on the right).
(9) Turn left onto Rue du Languedoc, then right onto Rue Maletache, which leads to Rue des Filatiers. Turn right onto Rue des Filatiers. You will arrive at Place de la Trinité.
Capitole district
(10) Turn left onto Rue des Marchands, which leads back to Rue de Metz. Take Rue de la Bourse opposite, then turn right onto Rue Malcousinat (Hôtel de Boysson, home to the Maison de l'Occitanie, on the left). Turn left onto Rue des Changes, then left again onto Rue Tripière. Walk along the buildings on your right to reach Rue du May. The Musée du Vieux Toulouse is located in the Hôtel Dumay at no. 7. Turn left and then right onto Rue Saint-Rome to reach Rue Chalande, which leads to the Fontaine des Puits-Clos fountain.
(11) Continue straight on Rue Baronie, which becomes Rue des Tourneurs, then leads to Rue de Metz. Turn left in front of the Musée des Augustins (closed for renovation in April 2024) before turning left onto Rue des Arts, alongside the museum. Then turn right onto Rue Cantegril and, at the Fontaine Boulbonne fountain, turn immediately left to cross Place Saint-Georges. Continue straight ahead on Rue Saint-Antoine until the first intersection.
(12) Turn left onto Rue Pélissier. You can enter the Church of Saint-Jérôme on the left and exit on the other side before turning right to rejoin the main pedestrian street of Alsace-Lorraine (otherwise, go around the church). From Rue d'Alsace-Lorraine, take Rue Baour-Lormian, which leads back to Rue Saint-Rome via Place Salengro. Turn right onto Rue Saint-Rome to reach Place du Capitole (free visit inside the Capitole, via the main entrance).
(13) Turn left onto Rue Gambetta, then Rue Lakanal (second on the right) alongside Collège Pierre de Fermat (Hôtel de Bernuy). You will come to the Couvent des Jacobins. Free visit to the church, but there is a charge to continue into the cloister. Continue along Rue Lakanal until you reach Rue Pargaminières, then turn right to return to Place du Capitole. Turn left into the busy Rue du Taur, then, after the Church of Notre-Dame-du-Taur, turn right into Rue du Sénéchal. Return to Place du Capitole by turning right onto Rue Rémusat, then immediately left onto Rue Lafayette, which runs alongside Square Charles de Gaulle, behind the town hall.
(14) At the junction with Rue d'Alsace Lorraine, continue to Place Wilson, see the fountain in the centre, then turn left onto Rue d'Austerlitz. Turn left onto Rue Victor Hugo, then left again in front of the market of the same name. Turn left onto Rue Rivals to rejoin Rue d'Alsace Lorraine, which you should take on the right (there isan Orange shop in a beautiful Art Deco building on the right at the crossroads). Turn immediately left onto Rue du Salé, then continue along Rue du Périgord. You will see the Art Deco library on your right, followed by the small Chapelle des Carmélites (you can go inside).
(15). When you reach Rue du Taur, turn right onto this street to arrive at the Basilica of Saint-Sernin (open to visitors) (S/E).
