Verfeil-sur-Seye - Former Abbey of Beaulieu-en-Rouergue

This countryside hike starts in the small village of Verfeil-sur-Seye and takes you through woods, shady valleys and plateaus to the former Cistercian abbey of Beaulieu-en-Rouergue, now a contemporary art centre, located in a truly green setting. This makes up for the short off-trail section, which requires attention, a good sense of direction and... strong legs.

Description of the walk

Park your vehicle in the large car park next to the cemetery, to the left of the D20, in the direction of Varen.

No signposts

(S) Return to the D20 and turn left. Follow the road, pass a path on your left and continue to an intersection marked by two beautiful trees and a cross.

(1) Turn left onto the partially tarmac road, which alternates between steep climbs and false flats, to reach a crossroads.

Signposting:PR®1wooden signs

(2) Turn right onto the wide path that runs alongside an old wire fence on the left. At the next fork, take the path on the right that slopes slightly downwards (PR®1sign). The slope becomes steeper as you approach the bottom of the valley. The path curves to the left and joins a much wider stabilised track.

(3) Turn left. You will reach the beautifully restored old Druilhet mill and shortly afterwards, ignore thePR®1signposting which invites you to turn left and continue straight ahead. Cross the Ruisseau de la Baye stream and immediately turn left to follow it. Continue to the confluence with the Ruisseau de Jouyre stream.

(4) Cross a small bridge, turning left. You will find yourself at the foot of an old quarry overgrown with vegetation. Turn right immediately after the bridge to go up the Jouyre stream. Cross it further on to reach the left bank.

(5) Just before the confluence with another stream, cross the Jouyre again and begin the gradual climb that leads to the top of the plateau and the hamlet of La Salesse.

(6) At the small tarmac road, turn left and then, a few metres further on, continue straight ahead along the wide grassy path. This path winds its way between woods and meadows, initially heading west-south-west and then south when it reaches the bottom of a small valley. Cross the bridge over the stream and continue uphill opposite. The wide track turns sharply left and arrives at a crossroads with an old rusty sign leaning against the embankment.

SignpostPR®1

(7) Leave the VTT1 signposting that branches off to the left and continue to the right on thePR®1signposting, which you will find again 250m further on, at a fork where it descends to the right.

No signposting

Cross the hamlet of Begayne and leave the tarmac road leading to Combe Mousse on your right. As you pass, you will notice a few yurts in the woods on your left. At the crossroads at an elevation of 369 metres, go straight ahead and continue to the next intersection.

(8) Turn left, cross the hamlet of Dreuilhe and, after a right-hand bend, leave the road and turn left onto a path which, 400 metres further on, leads to the small road you have just left. Turn left downhill and then left again at the junction that follows the junction with the D75.

(9) 150 metres further on, at the end of the field on your right, leave the road and turn right at the hairpin bend. Be careful, as this path is not easy to spot. Wide at the start, it turns left, descends into the undergrowth and becomes narrower.

(10) The path opposite this junction is no longer passable. Turn right and then, a hundred metres further on, turn left downhill onto a wider path that joins the D33.

(11) At the bridge over the Sèye, do not take the busy road, but look for the small wooden bridge below on the right. Go down and, after crossing this small bridge, follow the wide path mown into the meadow, which quickly leads to the former Abbey of Beaulieu-en-Rouergue.

(12) Take a moment to appreciate this peaceful, green site. Take the same path back to the bridge over the Seye. Turn right onto the road, then quickly leave it to take a wide path on the left. At the fork immediately after, take the left branch (woodenPR®2sign), which you will leave shortly afterwards.

(13) Continue left on the wide path, then turn right and come out higher up on a small road in the hamlet of Roubi, which has a few beautifully restored old houses.

SignpostPR®2

(14) Turn left and continue to the junction with the D20. Cross over, leaving the small road on your left at the Bach houses and continue straight ahead. The slope becomes much steeper and you will come to a T-junction.

No signposting

(15) Leave thePR®2, which branches off to the right, and turn left. At the junction shortly after the path on the right that leads to the restored building of Pech du Fournel, turn left onto a path heading south-east. Once you reach the small, partially tarmac road at Barthe Redonde, make a first turn left then right and continue downhill, keeping the village of Verfeil and its bell tower in your sights. Pass the Moulin de Breil and cross the Seye.

(16) Leave the road and take a wide, steeply ascending gravel path on the right that leads into the village. Take the fourth alley on the left, cross Rue Principale and reach the pretty little square where you can admire the beautiful market hall. A little further on, on the left, the Church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens awaits your visit.
Then take Rue de l'Eglise, which leads to a small road that takes you to the car park at the start of the walk (S/E).

Notes

The route was modified in November 2018 between points (4) and (6) following a comment from a landowner whose field we were crossing. The alternative route described was suggested by fellow hiker Nuscor, whom I would like to thank very much.

ThePR®1andPR®2markings here consist of wooden signs, without the yellow markings usually found on this type of signage.

This hike is not recommended in case of heavy rain. Several sections may be flooded or extremely muddy.

Between waypoints (4) and (6), you have to cross the Jouyre stream twice. This can be very difficult after heavy rain.

There is no water along the route. Please plan accordingly.

Good hiking boots are strongly recommended, as well as walking sticks.

Worth a visit

The Church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens in Verfeil, as well as the market hall and the adjoining "cornières" (vaulted passages under the houses).

The former Abbey of Beaulieu-en-Rouergue, built in 1144 by the Cistercian monks of Clairvaux and remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries. The buildings were restored from 1960 onwards. The contemporary art centre was created in 1970.

Beaulieu Abbey

The site of Cornusson and its castle, on the D20, a few kilometres to the north.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

Beautiful hike, walking alone, walking quite fast, often below the time announced by Visorando.

Very good, but be careful when approaching the abbey. You have to cross the river and not go up on the right... dead end.

Hello,

I have just surveyed this route for the second time in two months, as a hiker had pointed out that it was a shame not to pass by the Prat Ferrand mill. That is what I did this time.
At km 4.8, after crossing the little Jouyre stream, turn right and follow it upstream.
The route is clear and pleasant, but the climb can be tough. You arrive at La Salesse, cutting the distance by a few hundred metres! The Prat Ferrand mill is an inaccessible ruin of secondary interest. You have to cross the stream again (you already crossed it once on the way up), which can be a problem during the rainy season.
I have put this hike on the club's calendar for next month, and for me, having done both, there is no question of climbing via the "Roc de las Putos", as it is a completely "blind" climb which, in my opinion, has no interest other than to discourage some hikers.
Furthermore, at around km 13.2, it is no longer possible to go straight ahead, as the old path has become impassable. You have to turn right and go around the sides of the triangle (I already pointed this out a few months ago), which adds a few hundred metres to the route.
Finally, at around km 14.5, the climb to Mas de Roubi is on the left on a very well-maintained path; the right-hand side is "blocked" due to lack of maintenance.
In any case, it's a very beautiful hike with lovely views and plenty of shade if it's hot!
A shortcut is possible: at km 4.8, continue straight ahead (as on the original route) to the bridge over the Baye (stone slab).
From there, continue on the PR, which climbs back up to the route, saving you about 3.5 km.
Best regards
Nuscor

It's a shame that the route doesn't go past the Prat Ferrand mill.

Hello,
Sorry, but in my ramblings, you should read at the end "you have to turn right (not left)....
But the topography of the map clears up any ambiguity.
Also, I forgot to mention that at point 14: "do not turn right as it is blocked" but continue straight on to the hamlet of Roubi, which is probably shorter anyway.
Best regards
Nuscor

Hello,
I did this route yesterday to check it out with a view to leading my hiking club there next November.
I agree with the general comments, particularly regarding the "quite difficult" section between points 5 and 6, which is steep but short, about 500 to 600 metres, but with no trail, so you have to judge for yourself. It is essential to know how to read a map correctly and use a compass.
Once on the plateau, we are rewarded with a beautiful panorama on both sides before reaching the hamlet of "La Salesse" without difficulty.
However, it is important to note the short section before point 14 (junction with the Verfeil Parisot road).
At an altitude of 250 metres, it is impossible to continue as the path is blocked by vegetation.
You must turn left and walk along the sides of the triangle thus formed, which is easy to do.
The Beaulieu Abbey site is a must-see, and the rest of the route is straightforward!

Thanks to the hiker who opened this route.

Thank you for your feedback. What should be added to make the description easier to follow? Where did you find it difficult to follow?

Complicated route description. Difficult to find the route without GPS, especially from the stone footbridge. Can be shortened by following the PR1 trail markers.
A pleasant hike... provided you find the right path.

At one point, the trail was completely invisible, but luckily I had GPS so I could pick up the trail again further on. Apart from that section, the hike was very beautiful.

It is indeed a beautiful and interesting hike. However, as clearly stated, knowledge of map reading and orientation is necessary, and with a good, up-to-date IGN map, everything will go smoothly. It is advisable to be accustomed to climbing, and as the "second part" of the route is mostly in the sun, remember to bring a hat and plenty of water! Avoid during heatwaves, or if you know how to navigate using a map, do it in reverse, in the opposite direction to the description. Of course, Beaulieu Abbey is magnificent and a stop there is a must! I highly recommend this hike!
