Bonnan, another side of the Bonne Vallée

A little-used trail to discover a wild part of the Bonnan Valley. Wide tracks and pretty little paths running along both sides of the Bonnan stream offer a different view of the valley.

Description of the walk

Park in the large car park at the Salle Communale in Milhars.
Much of the route is unmarked and requires a map and GPS.
The marked sections are not part of this loop.

Yellow markings - Bonnan Valley

(S/E) On the D600 with your back to the community hall, turn left towards the Place de la Mairie. In front of the community café, cross the road and turn right. This uphill street passes two calvaries. At the second white iron cross, Bournazel, continue straight ahead, following the sign for Sentier de Découverte de Bonnan. After the bend, the road approaches the stream.

No signposts

(1) Stay on this road to cross the stream. Go up parallel to the stream. At the three-way junction, turn left. At the next junction, take the hairpin bend to the left. The road gives way to a dirt track at Darrasse.

(2) At the first intersection, turn left and pass in front of the relay tower. Keep heading south-west, ignoring the small paths that branch off to the right and left. The track you are on is the Sentier Intercommunal de la QRGA. The wide track climbs and descends very gently through varied countryside, passing over the Pech Mas plateau, then narrows towards its end before reaching a wide white forest road.

(3) At the white forest road, turn left and, after 150 m, take a sharp left onto the dirt track. The track passes in front of a wooded pasture. Follow the cattle enclosure, then follow the track until you reach the Bonnan stream again.

(4) Ford the stream three times within 300 m. Follow it on your right until you reach a bridge. You will see more local signs.

(5) Cross the bridge and walk to the Tuff Waterfall and back. In summer, the waterfall is dry, but in winter, the spring flows abundantly. It is worth a short detour as you can walk up to the source.

(6) After visiting the Bonnan Tuff Waterfall, return to the bridge and cross it again.

Yellow markings Bonnan Discovery Trail

(5) Turn left. The trail runs parallel to the stream until the junction near Bournazel. Note the beautiful remains of a shepherd's hut and, at the bridge, you can see the Bonnan waterfall on your left.

(7) Return to the fork in the path.

(1) Continue on the road climbing opposite and retrace the section you covered at the start to return to the car park (S/E).

It is indeed better to park the car at the edge of the forest (four shaded parking spaces). However, this adds two kilometres to the hike. Of course, there is no water at the waterfall in August. But the trail is mostly shaded.

Hello,
We did this hike on 6 August 2019 and were very happy with the support provided by your website. I have a few personal comments to make. First of all, you can shorten the route a little and, above all, avoid the tarmac section from the village to point 1, as there is a small car park in the woods where you can leave your vehicle we needed GPS at point 2 because the path is not very well used and the trail is almost invisible. Finally, from the tuff waterfall, we did not turn around but continued along the small path close to the stream (unfortunately dry at the moment), which we found nicer than the forest path (from points 6 to 7).
Thank you for this walk.
Best regards.
Jean Didier
