From the Aveyron to Bonnan via the Causses

This hike is a longer version of the hike. The start and finish are the same (points 1 to 7 and 9 to 14 of the short route).
A rugged and fairly challenging hike through magnificent landscapes and natural surroundings.

Description of the walk

Start: car park at Montrosier town hall.

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, head east across the square and take the dead-end road on the right. A few metres further on, take the path on the left between two houses. Follow this path uphill. You will reach a junction with a small tarmac road.

(1) Turn left onto it. Leave this road and head into the forest on the right, continuing uphill. You’ll reach a crossroads with a track.

(2) Turn right to reach the edge of the cliff above the Bonnan valley: magnificent view. Follow the edge of the cliff along a narrow path. Turn left to begin a relatively difficult descent, especially on slippery ground. Reach the banks of the Bonnan.

(3) Turn left and, after a few steps, reach the stunning waterfall.
Return to the crossroads, cross the stream via a small bridge and continue left along this ascending path. A final fording to begin the climb towards Roussayrolles. Reach the junction with a road.

(4) Turn left towards the Touron farm. At the junction, head straight on along the path that runs alongside a meadow where Salers cattle are often grazing. Make sure you close the electric gate properly. Turn right to reach the centre of Roussayrolles.

(5) Leave the village heading south-east, then south. Follow theGRP® Cordes-Penne-Coustous trail (yellow-red markings) for a short while.
At the next junction, cross over to the opposite side then turn right towards Peyralade. Enter a wood, then exit to reach another junction in a clearing.

(6) Keep to the right on the road, continue on and enter the woods again; on emerging, you’ll find a junction with a stony track typical of the Causse terrain.

(7) Turn right onto it and follow it until you reach theGRP® mentioned earlier.

(8) Turn right onto it and head downhill; it is a wide path that bends sharply to the right and narrows as it descends to the valley and the Laussière stream. At the bottom of the valley, turn right onto a small road and cross the stream.

(9) Very soon, leave the road to the left and climb up a fairly steep path towards the ridge.
Please note: This section is a modification ofthe originalGRP® route, which ran further north; the old route is still shown on the IGN map. Continue to reach the top of the ridge.

(10) Take the wide path on the left:the oldGRP® coming from La Clède. There is a dolmen nearby on the right. Head towards the Pas de la Clède.

(11) Turn right onto a grassy path that descends gently towards the east. Ignore a path on the right, then turn right at the Fork in the road. You’ll come to a small tarmac road; follow it to the right and, after three bends, you’ll find a path.

(12) Take it to the left and begin the descent, reaching a crossroads with several directions at a place called La Débalade.

(13) First turn left then right here to continue the descent due north; at the entrance to Montrosier, follow the D34 road, turn right at the cemetery to reach the Montrosier town hall car park (S/E).

Hike completed after rain. But not too slippery. Refer to the comments in the reviews, particularly those by chlarnard, as the description is very vague in some places. This didn't stop me from walking an extra 2 km.
As it's not signposted, you spend a lot of time looking at your mobile phone, which is a shame. If you have walking sticks, it becomes complicated.
Good route for testing your endurance. A bit long at the end.

A lovely walk with a beautiful view between points 2 and 3.
However, it’s very easy to get lost at the start; there’s no path from point 2 to points 3 and 4, so you literally have to make your way through the trees and brambles in the hope of finding a path again.
A very long climb from point 9, and the end of the walk was very, very muddy despite the good weather over the last few days.
Worth doing again!

A fantastic, challenging hike with stunning scenery. However, there are no signposts and the route description is rather brief, even misleading. You’ll need to use a GPS and keep an eye on your smartphone. Tip: Try to meet up for lunch in Roussayrolles: a charming little village with picnic tables and a water tap.

Une route agréable overall.
Lovely views between points 2 and 3, but take care on the descent before point 3 as it is very steep (not to be attempted in wet weather).
A long and fairly steep climb between points 9 and 10, which can really tire your legs.

It’s true that the scenery is absolutely stunning. Even in the woods, you can still see for miles. On the other hand, the only real criticism is the lack of “viewpoints” along the route, apart from, of course, the one overlooking the Bonnan Valley from the cliff (which is magnificent) and a few others towards the end of the walk.
As for the route itself, it’s very easy to get lost (and that’s exactly what we did five or six times) because there are “tracks” all over the place, and sometimes you have to follow the inter-municipal path and sometimes veer off it. The GPS track was a great help, even in places where we didn’t feel we were going the wrong way.
Points to note:
=> Between points 2 and 3, you need to leave the inter-municipal path (point 347) to reach the cliff on the left.
=> After walking along the cliff for about 100 metres, the main path turns right, whereas the path to follow is opposite and barely visible.
=> After point 3, ‘the path that goes up’ is on the left when returning from the waterfall (left = on the other side of the bridge), but on the right once you’ve crossed the bridge.
=> Point 5 (in case any hikers set off without a compass :-) ), the south-east exit of the village is “definitely on the left”.
=> From point 5 to point 7, you simply need to follow the road (the directions suggest you should leave it to enter a wood).
=> Point 8: we missed the sharp right-hand bend (whether through inattention or because it wasn’t obvious, we’re not sure) and ended up at a place called “Castagnié”. From there, we were nevertheless able to rejoin the track, though at the cost of some nasty scratches from the brambles. So be careful not to miss the fork.
=> Point 9: the climb is long and tough on the legs… especially at this stage of the hike: be careful not to overestimate your strength.
=> Point 12: don’t get confused between the start of the track (not very visible on the left) and the main path which would take you back to point 4.
=> Similarly, at point 372, the “three-way junction” is invisible and it’s easy to take the wrong track.
