Around Milhars

A fairly short, unpretentious hike requiring a good sense of direction. The route is mostly along forest tracks or paths but has no signposts. A compass and map are essential; a GPS is recommended. The terrain is quite varied and you won’t get bored at any point.

Description of the walk

Coming from Cordes and entering Milhars, after the sign, enter the village and park in the car park at the town hall square on the right.

(S/E) With the town hall and information sign behind you, cross the road carefully at the pedestrian crossing to find the start of the route in a street opposite (green marker on a post). Walk up the street towards the Moulin de Terisse, then keep left without going all the way to the mill.

At the end of the street, turn right onto the path bordered on the right by the Cérou, which leads to the Moulin de Garenne. At the mill, there is a view of the jetty. You’ll reach the junction with the road and turn left.

(1) Turn left again (signs for the Bonan Valley and Chemin du Lavoir) to follow a road that will take you up to Darasse on the Causse plateau.

(2) Ignore the return path on the left and continue straight on. Once in Darasse, take a path at the end of the road heading due west, which leads to a junction with a forest track.

(3) Turn left onto this track, heading first south then west-south-west to the next junction at an altitude of 317 metres.

(4) Take this path on the right in the Pomiés area, heading north-west. Shortly afterwards, the forest thins out and a fork appears.

(5) At this fork, take the path on the right, which you then leave to walk along the field with the woodland on your right for about 400 m. This section is off the beaten track but very pleasant as it is open. We then walk northwards, first across a field, then a hedge appears on the left which we cross without difficulty (passage) and without changing direction to enter the second field, continuing northwards until, at the end on our right, we find a good forest track that will take us back towards Milhars.

(6) We therefore turn right to follow this gently sloping path. We are now in the Langlade area. We reach a four-way crossroads where we come across another path marked in yellow.

(7) Ignore this and carry straight on, paying no heed to the markings. You will then reach Darasse, which you passed on the way out.

(3) Continue straight on, in the opposite direction to the outward journey, towards the Moulin de Garenne, which you have already passed on the way out.

(2) Take the path on the right. Once you reach the road, walk left until you reach the crossroads where a cross stands.

(8) Continue to the left and, at the fork in the road, keep left towards the castle. Pass the castle and then turn right onto a path which leads further on to a road.

Take this road to the left to reach the RD600. Follow this road to the left with care to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

This walk is easy but classified as moderate due to the lack of signposts.

After (3), on the way there, you pass the Antenne and the road becomes a footpath.

At (4), the junction at elevation 317, the ‘Chemin communal’ sign has been removed.

At (5), using a compass, take a bearing of between 25 and 30 degrees (NE) to continue for 400 m on the return route (6).

Worth a visit

The Garenne mill.
At (4), the “Chemin communal” sign leads to the village of Montrosier.
At (5), Le Combalou, head up the field to the left; there is a viewpoint here.
Visit to Milhars.

The old village, though small, is well worth a visit as it is very pretty.

Every second Sunday in February, the Wicker Festival takes place. A friendly festival where you can take part in wickerwork workshops and enjoy lunch.

A very pleasant walk we did in early September. It climbs between points 2 and 3, but the gradient is steady. The path disappears completely into the fields, but the GPS route is spot on and we didn’t get lost!
In short, a very pleasant walk

We went on a walk on the morning of 25 June 2024 in lovely weather. The route is easy and partly shaded. The little village of Milhars is very pretty. This route is rarely used; we were on our own. We used the GPX file and had no trouble at all.

A lovely walk.
Beautiful scenery.
It’s a shame it isn’t signposted.
But... definitely worth doing!!!
