Lys Valley - Maupas Refuge

This first stage, which serves as an approach walk, is difficult. The climb is steep and sustained along the Torrent de Houradade up to the junction at the Cabane de la Coume. Continuing the route to reach the Cabane de Pratlong allows you to catch your breath a little before tackling the final stretch via the numerous tight hairpin bends leading to the pumping station and then to the Refuge du Maupas, where the warm welcome will quickly make you forget the day’s exertions.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Pic du Maupas

Description of the walk

Park in the Bourdalès car park before the end of the Lys Valley road, near the inn.

(S) Walk past the inn, turn left to cross the stream via the bridge, then turn right onto the wide path.

(1) Take the path on the left which crosses the meadow and soon enters the forest. Climb through this superb beech forest and reach the crossroads at the foot of the Pré de l'Artigue.

(2) Turn left to begin the steep climb up this grassy meadow. Continue along the stony and occasionally rutted path, whose steep gradient will leave you breathless and your legs aching. On the left, the beautiful Houradade Waterfall offers a chance for a break and a brief moment of respite before resuming the climb to the junction just before the Cabane de la Coume, which is hidden from view as it sits above the rocky outcrop.

(3) Turn right to cross the torrent. Cross several small streams, including the one that serves as the outlet for Lac Vert, and continue towards the Cabane de Pratlong. On leaving the woods, turn left, leaving the hut in question on your right, as well as the Prat Long station building situated at the penstock.

(4) Ignore the path on the left leading to Lac Vert and continue to the right. You will then begin the steep, winding ascent leading to the pumping station, where a break will be welcome before the final stretch.

(5) Resume the ascent. After a few hairpin bends, ignore the path on the left leading to Lac Bleu, continue to the right and then pass under the penstock that supplies the Lys power station. You will soon reach the Refuge du Maupas (E).

a hike that earns its climb. The start is in the shade of the woods, with beautiful waterfalls on the first part, but also lots of rocks. The end of the trail is not easy to find, especially since we finished in fog. The next day, the sky was clear and we were treated to a spectacular view. It's magnificent

I set off in the cool of the morning at 6am and didn’t come across many people. It was a gruelling climb from the pumping station. I received a warm welcome at the mountain hut and some good advice.
Thanks for this route

The place is simply stunning! I’d planned to complete the whole hike, but I decided to change my plans due to the deteriorating weather and also because of my photography goals. A damp night halfway along the route at the Prat Long hut – damp because the hut leaks and the sleeping area quickly turns into a swimming pool. As for the fireplace, it’s out of order, as indicated on a sign behind the hut door.

Next time I’ll reach the refuge and the Pic de Maupas, where I hope to capture some magnificent new images, like those taken during this first attempt, which can be seen here https://youtu.be/ZqLrdLSa1OU

Happy hiking to you all!
