Trotinambulles in Seine-et-Marne from Saâcy-sur-Marne

A discovery tour of three communes: Nanteuil-sur-Marne, Citry and Saâcy-sur-Marne, which are entitled to the Champagne appellation in Seine-et-Marne. A delightful walk offering beautiful views of the Marne Valley and its slopes, where sun-drenched vineyards alternate with deep woods.

Description of the walk

Line P from Gare de l’Est. Saâcy-sur-Marne/Nanteuil-sur-Marne station. For train timetables, visit the Transilien website.

For motorists: Nanteuil/Saâcy station has a car park. Please note that this car park is full from 7am Monday to Friday and it is difficult to find parking nearby.

(S/E) Leave the station and take the street on the left. Do not cross the railway line but turn right onto Chemin Vert.

Yellow markings

(1) Turn right and continue along a grassy path until you reach the first path on the left.

(2) Turn into it (Chemin de la Petite Couture), then turn right and follow the boundary of the property wall for 100 m.

(3) Turn left at the corner of the wall. Follow the path between the orchards, then turn left again onto Chemin de la Bonnette, which leads down to Place de l’Église.

(4) Continue straight on along Rue de la Ferme, pass Rue des Palis and turn right into Rue de Buttes. Walk past the community hall to the railway bridge.

(5) Without crossing it, turn right at a right angle onto Rue de la Marne. Cross Rue de Pavant at a square.

(6) Cross the square and head up Rue Michaud on the left, following it through the vineyards. Ignore the turnings to the right and left until you reach a fork at the edge of the woods.

(7) Turn slightly right (due south) and head straight up to the hamlet of Villaré via Rue de la Croix.

(8) Continue through the hamlet, ignoring the streets to the left and right; pass the water tower on your left and, at the junction with the D55, turn left onto it. Follow this busy road and turn right onto the first farm track.

(9) Take this track. At the first junction, turn left, then left again at the next junction to reach a fork a few metres further on.

(10) Turn right (west) onto the path that descends to the Chantemanche vineyards, which you cross by keeping to the right until you reach the Dhuis Aqueduct.

(11) Turn right, then at the next junction, turn left onto Chemin des Feuchères, between woods and vineyards, which leads back down to Saâcy-sur-Marne.

(12) At the first junction with Chemin de Citry, take the street on the left, then before the Ru Philippe, turn right onto Chemin du Ru Philippe. Continue along the path, which becomes Rue de la Couture, to the roundabout at Saâcy-sur-Marne.

(13) Cross the roundabout and take Rue du Pont opposite. Cross the bridge over the Marne.

(14) At the junction, head up the “Sentier de l’église” opposite, then, once on the square, take a narrow path slightly to the left which starts at the back of the communal courtyard and leads to the Grande Rue in Méry-sur-Marne.

(15) Turn right, walk up the Grande Rue, then turn into the first path on the right.

End of yellow markings
Red/white markings

(16) At the top of this path, veer slightly to the right to follow the trail through the forest. Continue straight on along the edge of the vineyards until you reach a crossroads.

(17) Turn right at the junction of the farm tracks and continue left until the first junction where a path descends to the right.

End of Red/White Markings

(18) Go down this stony path, continue along the Petite Rue, then turn right onto the "Rue de Charrière" which leads down towards the centre of Nanteuil-sur-Marne.

Yellow markings

(19) Turn right, then take the street on the left. Pass Sainte-Marguerite Church, then when you reach the "Maurice Varry" square, turn right into Rue du Bac and join the D402

(20) Cross it carefully and cross the Pont de Nanteuil sur la Marne bridge, then the railway line. Turn right to reach the SNCF platforms (S/E).

Notes

On this route, you can admire the vineyard plots that brought Seine-et-Marne into the Champagne appellation in 1921. Saâcy-sur-Marne, Nanteuil-sur-Marne and Citry are the only three communes in Île-de-France to hold the Champagne AOC designation!
The terrain, shaped over the centuries, has been ideal for planting vines across these three communes.
Since then, Chardonnay, Meunier and Pinot Noir vines have adorned the hillsides, producing a delicious champagne that is lively, supple and fruity.

Slightly muddy terrain on the hillsides near the vineyards. Beautiful scenery under sunny skies on Sunday, 18 January. Very easy and pleasant access by train.

A very beautiful hike through the woods and vineyards above the Marne Valley.
We only used the route map and not the description.
The vines had already lost their leaves, so it would certainly be more interesting to do this hike in October to enjoy the autumn colours of the vineyards.

A very pleasant walk with beautiful views of the Marne Valley from the vineyards and woods.
Why not indicate interesting winegrowers along the route?
