Around Saâcy-sur-Marne through the vineyards and along the banks of the Marne

The three only communes in Île-de-France located in the Champagne appellation area are nestled in a circular loop of the Marne. This is a very pretty route through the vineyards and along the Dhuis Aqueduct, punctuated by beautiful views and places to stop for a break on the banks of the Marne.

Description of the walk

GR® and PR® markings

(S/E) From Nanteuil-Saâcy station, head towards Nanteuil-sur-Marne on the D55. Cross the Marne and arrive at Placette Maurice Varry.

(1) Turn left onto Rue Alexandre Morlot and continue along this street until you reach Rue de la Charrière. The road begins to curve, leaves the town and climbs steeply towards the vineyards.

(2) At the end of the second bend, at the sign, take the wide path on the right that enters the vineyards. 600 metres further on, the path turns left and arrives at an intersection in front of a wood.

GRP® and Chemin de Saint-Jacques

(3) Turn right, then left at the first crossroads, then right at the second crossroads until you reach the D84.

(4) First turn left then right on this road and take the first path on the right that crosses a forest. At the end of the forest, continue for about 250 metres. The path turns right and begins to descend through the vineyards.

(5) At the three-way junction, take the path on the left towards the hamlet of Rudenoise.

(6) In the hamlet, turn left onto Rue de Montdorin, cross a stream and climb up to the D11.

(7) Carefully cross the road with a left-right turn and take the concrete path opposite, which climbs back up into the vineyards. Reach the relay antenna and continue along the balcony above the plots.

PR®

(8) Cross the small asphalt road, turn right, then left and continue along the path for about 800 m until you reach an intersection.

(9) At the intersection, continue to the right, downhill towards Saulchery (a place called Ruvet).

(10) Turn left, then right, cross the D969 with caution and take the path opposite that runs alongside a stream to the Marne.

(11) Turn right and follow the Marne to the bridge (there are picnic tables conveniently located just before the bridge).

(12) Pass under the bridge in front of a restaurant, turn right and take the D82. Cross the Marne and continue carefully along this road until you reach a junction with a path where there is a telephone relay station.

(13) Take this path on the right and continue until you reach an intersection.

Not signposted

(14) Continue on the main path that branches off to the left. Cross the railway bridge and arrive at Pavant. Follow Rue du Val de Marne

(15) Turn right onto Rue de l'Église. Shortly after the church, take Rue Grousy, which becomes a path as it approaches the woods. At the intersection of two paths (elevation 95), take the one that climbs to the left (rocky area that can be slippery in wet weather).

PR® (and former GR®)

(16) Do not cross the road (D82) and take the path on the right over the Aqueduc de la Dhuis (barrier).

(17) After crossing a very short section of the aqueduct itself (not buried at this point), leave the PR® on your left and continue straight ahead. Begin a short, fairly steep descent towards a stream that passes under the aqueduct.

(18) Cross it and climb up the other side. Here, the canal is open to the air and the passage is unusual.

(19) Take a path that climbs to the left. The passage can be slippery in wet weather and has a rope handrail. If this passage is impassable, you can rejoin the path via a second passage a hundred metres further on. Climb up to the hamlet of Moulin à Vent.

(20) At the end of the path (between two buildings), take the tarmac road on the left. Cross a small road and continue straight ahead on the path that goes around a house. Then head towards the water tower on your left.

(21) Descend to the right into the hamlet of Villaré. Ignore the streets that branch off to the left and right. The tarmac road turns into a dirt track and continues downhill towards Citry. You will arrive at a three-way junction.

(22) Take the small sunken lane on the right. In the village, go around the square and take Rue de la Marne opposite until you reach the railway line.

(23) Without crossing it, turn left and follow the railway line to the next street (Rue des Buttes). At the community centre, take the street on the left that goes up towards the church.

(24) Take the steps that go around it and join Chemin de la Bonnette, turning right to reach a crossroads with several houses. At the crossroads, take the path on the right that runs alongside a property (wire fence).

(25) The path turns left, then right and heads back towards the railway line. Walk along the left side of the track and you will reach Nanteuil-Saâcy station (S/E).

Notes

In the vineyards, there are numerous paths allowing winegrowers to access their plots. The GR® markings are often indicated on vineyard posts and are sometimes difficult to see. The route therefore requires a little attention.

The section of road (D82) between the bridge over the Marne and the point (13) requires great caution, especially at the bridge.

In summer, during hot weather, it can get very hot in the vineyards.

In wet weather, the Dhuis Aqueduct can be quite muddy.
