Description of the walk

The starting point for this circular walk is in the car park opposite the town hall in Montreuil-aux-Lions.

(S/E) Opposite the town hall, go down Avenue de Paris on the right, then take Chemin de l'Abîme on the right. Cross the bridge over the Ru de l'Arche and go up to the first crossroads.

(1) Take the second path on the right for 100 metres.

(2) Turn right onto a path that leads to a small wash house.

(3) Turn right and follow the path to Rue d'Haloup.

(4) Take this street on the right until you reach the D1003.

(5) Cross it carefully and go up Rue du Pipet opposite. Continue to Rue de l'Église.

(6) Pass the Saint-Martin Church, turn right onto Rue des Vignes, then left onto a farm track (marked white/red) which you should follow.

(7) Turn slightly left, then immediately follow the marked path (white/red markings).

(8) Take the D16 road on the left, pass the stream.

(9) Take the first path on the right after the pasture (end of red/white markings), which then becomes a trail along the Ru de Bézu stream to Rue des Marais.

(10) Take this road on the left. Pass a crossroads and take a green path on the left that climbs up to a place called Caumont. When you reach a small road junction, turn right.

(11) Turn right and go back down Rue des Marais, cross the bridge and take the first path on the right. Pass the wash house, turn left, then follow Chemin du Moncel until you reach Rue des Vernets.

(12) Follow this road to the right.

(13) Take Chemin de Friande Fontaine on the left. Ignore a few turnings on the right and left, then continue through the woods.

(14) Ignore the first path on the right. Continue and take the path on the right that descends towards Ru des Garennes. After the bridge (be careful, it can be slippery), turn right immediately. Pass the chain across the path, then the hunters' hut, and continue along the main path. Ignore the paths branching off to the left and right until you reach Ru du Sautillet.

(15) Turn left before the bridge, then right. Cross the bridge and follow the wide Chemin des Vignes de Monbertoin, which leads to Rue du Château (wash house on the way down).

(16) Go up this road on the left, cross the D1003, or Avenue de Paris (watch out for fast vehicles), and take Rue du Parc until you reach the first crossroads.

(17) Take the second path on the right, pass the buildings, and turn right onto the path. Cross the bridge over the Ru des Bouillons, then walk up to Rue de Crouy.

(18) Cross it, go up opposite into Chemin de la Fosse Fondue, pass the football pitch, and take Rue de Templiers on the left.

(19) At the crossroads (roundabout), you can continue straight ahead to see the old commandery (now private and possibly undergoing renovation), and/or go down the path on the right, between the houses, to see the small wash house on the banks of the Ru de l'Abîme. Retrace your steps, go down Rue d'Haloup, turn right into Impasse de l'Abîme, then left. Go through the wooden gate and follow the path along the stream.

(20) Cross the stream on the left, either by wading or stepping on the large sandstone, then return to the junction from the outward journey.

(1) Continue downhill to the bridge over the Ru de l'Arche. Go back up the path, then turn left to reach the town hall car park (S/E).
