Description of the walk

In the village of Mont-sur-Meurthe, park on Rue de la Gare in the car park just past the former gatekeeper’s house.

(S/E) From the car park, head towards the village’s main street via Rue de la Gare and cross the D1 road at the pedestrian crossing. The start of the walk is directly opposite. Follow the old railway line due south. You’ll arrive in front of Le Ménil.

(1) Turn right, then left, towards Lamath. Please note: in the section through the forest, follow the path on the right (altitude 225m) after crossing the Ruisseau des Étangs and the short climb.

(2) When you reach the farm, cross the D9 road with care and head left up into the village of Lamath, as far as the church.

(3) Go round the church and head back down to the left towards the D9. Follow it to the right with care, cross the bridge over the Mortagne and continue for 100m.

(4) Turn right onto Rue de la Gare, which leads to the church at Xermaménil. Cross the D914 with care, opposite the school, continue to the right and pass in front of the village hall.

(5) Turn left onto Rue de la Cour towards La Louvière, passing by the stadium.
If the weather is fine, you’ll see a view of the Essey volcano on your right.

(6) Turn left along the hedge (elevation 261). Pass a pond on your right, then first turn right then left towards the power line.

(7) At the fork under the power line, turn right towards the telecommunications pylon, then join the D914 on the left.

(8) Follow the road to the right towards Rehainviller. Caution! The road is quite busy up to the farm.

(9) Cross the road carefully. Turn left and follow the path through the fields leading to Mont-sur-Meurthe. Join the D1f.

(10) Walk down the street opposite the roundabout and turn right to reach the village’s main street, Rue de la Colline. At the junction with Rue d’Alsace, turn left, cross the bridge over the Mortagne and, 200m further on, you will find the car park on the right (S/E).

A pleasant walk with little elevation gain. Best avoided in hot weather as there aren’t many shaded sections. It’s true that the tarmac sections are fairly short, but they’re dangerous as there’s a lot of traffic.

A countryside walk with very clear instructions! The paths are generally well-maintained, with a bit of road walking.

A lovely walk, even though it involves a lot of tarmac roads (it’s hard to avoid that over 10 km). I spotted a few dragonflies at the start of the walk.
