Le Léomont and the three surrounding villages

A lovely walk combining open countryside, superb views and the surrounding forest.
Partly shaded, partly sunny.

This route passes numerous signposts but does not follow any of them consistently. Follow this description.
We recommend consulting the map of this route to familiarise yourself with the directions, particularly in the forest.

Description of the walk

Car park in front of Hudiviller church.

(S/E) From the car park, with your back to the church, head straight ahead onto Rue de la Fontaine. At the crossroads, turn left onto Chemin du Préhat, now a pretty residential street.
As you leave the village, the street turns into a wide path that runs alongside the motorway.

(1) Stay on this path and ignore the yellow signposting which turns left under a tunnel. Continue until you reach the D400.

(2) Cross the road carefully and continue straight ahead on the path that climbs. Ignore the numerous signposts and carry on uphill, straight ahead, until you reach a field enclosed by barbed wire. Turn right.
This wide path offers lovely views of the surrounding countryside and, in good weather, you can see the blue line of the Vosges.
Cross the small tarmac road and continue straight ahead.
(3) Leave the wide path and turn sharply right down a grassy path that leads into the forest. Keep going straight on, ignoring all the paths to the left and then to the right, and stay in the forest.
Pass a small orchard and continue straight on along the path that descends towards the village.

(4) At the bottom of the descent, take the first wide path on the left.
Continue until you reach a tin-roofed building on the left, then turn onto the path on the right which climbs towards the church.

(5) Walk past the church, go down the street on the left and, at thesecond junction, follow Rue de l’Ombre straight ahead.

(6) At the next junction, turn right onto Rue de l'Abreuvoir and continue towards the Sainte-Claire farm. The tarmac road climbs, passes the farm and leads to a junction.

(7) Continue straight on towards Léomont. The stony path descends to a junction. Ignore the path on the left and head up to the right, towards a small wood.

(8) Turn left and follow the edge of the woods until you reach a bend. Stay on the path that leads into the woods and climbs to the right. The narrow path can be slippery in places, though not dangerous. You will emerge onto a road.

(9) Turn left and head up towards the Léomont site. You’ll reach the mast.

(10) Continue to the left: superb views, a memorial and a map at the summit. Two benches await you. Leave the site and return to the mast.

(10) Back on the road, head down to the left and reach a crossroads with numerous signposts. Keep to the right and, 10 metres further on, note the small, low marker on the left-hand side of the path. Continue down the stony and somewhat steep path and reach a crossroads near the sculpture ‘The Woman with the Wheelbarrow’.

(12) Continue straight ahead along the grassy path. Reach the road and head towards Vitrimont. Cross the D400 with care and enter the village. Turn right, walk past the church (you can take a short detour to a playground with two benches).
Head down Rue de l’Aspirant Salducci, then left onto Rue Crocker. Note the fine depiction of the villages of Lorraine, where car parks have replaced the traditional village green.

(13) Then head down to the right onto Rue de la Fontaine.

(14) At the last houses, turn right onto Chemin du Breuil, heading towards the forest ranger’s house.

(15) Enter the forest, cross the motorway and continue straight on along the forest road, ignoring the signposting and the path on the left. You will come to a bend.

(16) Turn right, leaving a grassy path straight ahead.
Continue along this same forest road for about 2 km, ignoring all paths and tracks to the right or left. You will come to another forest road.

(17) Turn left, ignoring the signposting, and continue for about 200 m (tree marked 24).

(18) Leave the forest track to the right onto a pleasant grassy path. Follow this path straight on until you reach a crossroads.
(19) Continue straight on, cross the La Voivre stream and carry on until you reach the road, which you should follow to the right.

(20) Cross the motorway and head to the car park in front of the church (S/E).
