Description of the walk

(S) From Gite Sella, take the downhill trail heading south.

(1) At the other end of the lake, leave the trail heading up towards bivouac and keep heading towards Passo Gallarino.
(2) At Passo Gallarino, go right due west south-west. After a nice little lake (3), start a long hike down towards the valley (some areas are very steep).
(4) At Vallanta Torrent, cross a footbridge, several metres further turning right to head north. Then head up the small valley reaching Refuge de Vallanta end of today's stage (E).

Practical information

The descent to Vallenta valley is slippery in wet weather.

In the nearby area

Opportunity to see the sunrise over plaine du Pô if you're up early enough. It's a magical moment with views far over la plaine du pô as the heat haze has not yet appeared. A few moments later the sunrise gives Monte Viso a golden shimmer. A sight for sore eyes.

View of the Pô plain: magnificent ... the evening before and in the morning!
View of the Viso: Wow .... I prefer the view from the Viso refuge: a matter of taste!

Descending from the Passo Gallorino, there are two parts: a scree slope leading to a lake .... and around this lake, a huge "field" of cairns: too beautiful !!!! and second part, a descent into the forest (yes, you get trees back!!), very pretty.

Picnic in the sun beside the torrent:

The climb up to the Vallanta refuge, a quiet one, then a little steeper, but as we're beginning to see, it's nice.

Very nice refuge.... a lovely multi-storey dormitory at the very top... Good hot chocolates, but perhaps the least good of the tour in terms of cuisine.

Departure from Le Sella in fine weather, first hour's traverse alternating between névé and footpaths, then passage through superb, very mineral scenery...back down to the valley and then back up to the Vallenta hut, a very beautiful and rather restful hike compared to the day before. The Vallenta hut was a great welcome, with hot showers, top-quality shelter and excellent food. We'll be back...tomorrow we'll be back in France after 4 marvellous days and a top-quality hike...thank you.

Well, we made the mistake and went down to Alpetto.
I hadn't seen the comments before
But as it was supposed to be a short day, it made for a nice extra.
What I don't understand is why my GPS didn't show me the magnificent, well-marked path we had under our feet.
And yet I have Garmin's TrekMap Italia V2

Be careful not to make the same mistake we did at the start of the hut. Keep to the right to avoid the descent to the Alpetto refuge (1866m). Confirmation of the risks associated with the slippery slabs on the descent. We were hit by rain from 11.30am.
