Start from the car park at Levoncourt church.
(S/E) Walk up the street on the right, on the left-hand side of the church. At the edge of the forest, take the path on the right and then immediately turn right again onto a path that climbs gently along the edge of the orchards; follow this path, which narrows to a track and descends to the D411 road (take care).
(1) Take the road to the left and, after the village’s water reservoir, take the path on the right towards Morimont. Pass through the vehicle barrier and continue to the left-hand bend, where you leave this path.
(2) Take the path on the right which climbs to the “Ébourbettes”, marked with a Yellow Rectangle (view of Morimont Castle), which ascends gently. Take the shortcut on the left which leads to the upper section of the same path; follow it to the left for 100 m.
(3) Leave this path and take the track on the right, which climbs steeply for 400 m to the Rocher de la Sorcière. View over the upper Largue valley.
(4) The path then enters the orchards of the Ébourbettes plateau. You’ll reach the farm of the same name, where a chapel and a memorial stone commemorate General Girau’s passage through Switzerland during the last war.
(5) Go round the chapel on the right and continue along the dirt track through the meadows. Enter the forest and emerge back into the pastures.
(6) When you reach a junction of several paths (French/Swiss border), follow the well-marked stony path which climbs up to the upper part of the pastures and pass the first oak tree.
(7) When you reach the second oak tree, take the dirt track leading uphill to the right (the hamlet of Fontaine en bas on the left-hand side) to reach the ridge (fences), which you follow along the edge of the forest. When you reach the end of the forest, take the path immediately to the left, head downhill and cross the meadow (sheep paddock with a trough on the left). After passing through the fence, enter the Mont Perrou Forest. Find and take a path on your right (ruined stone wall on the left) and you’ll reach a crossroads.
(8) Follow the stone path to the left (see information below).Views over the Ajoie and the villages of La Baroche on the left. Walk for about 900 m until you reach a junction.
(9) Take a path on the right which descends gently.
(10) When you reach a T-junction, take the path leading down to the left towards the village of Charmoille.
(11) You’ll come to a small tarmac road; turn right onto it. Walk through the village of Charmoille as far as the church.
(12) Go round the church to the left via Rue Vie des Fossés. Follow this road for 1.5 km to the Col des Esserts (table and bench).
(13) After the pass, follow the path marked with a Red Diamond, which heads into the forest, ignoring the paths branching off to the left. 100 m further on, you’ll reach the border; cross into France and follow the path for 1.5 km until you emerge from the forest, where you’ll see the village of Levoncourt. Continue along the path, then onto the road, and cross the D411. Walk up Rue de l’École, heading towards the church, and you’ll reach the car park (S/E).
