Description of the walk

Start from the car park at Levoncourt church.

(S/E) Head up the street on the right, on the left-hand side of the church. At the edge of the forest, take the path on the right and then immediately right again onto a path that climbs gently through the orchards; follow this path, which ends in a track and descends to the D411 road (take care).

(1) Take the road on the left and, after the village water reservoir, take the path on the right towards Morimont. Pass the vehicle barrier and continue to the left-hand bend where you leave this path.

(2) Take the path on the right which climbs to “Les Ébourbettes”, marked with a Yellow Rectangle (view of Morimont Castle), which ascends gently. Take the shortcut on the left which leads to the upper section of the same path; follow it to the left for 100 m.

(3) Leave this path and take the track on the right which climbs steeply for 400 m to the Rocher de la Sorcière. View of the upper Largue valley.

(4) The path then enters the orchards of the Ébourbettes plateau. You arrive at the farm of the same name, where a chapel and a memorial stone commemorate General Girau’s passage through Switzerland during the last war.

(5) Go round the chapel to the right and continue along the dirt track through the meadows. Enter the forest and emerge back into the pastures.

(6) When you reach a crossroads, follow the well-marked stone path that climbs up to the upper part of the pastures and pass the first oak tree.

(7) When you reach the second oak tree, take the dirt track that climbs to the right to reach the ridge (fences), which you follow along the edge of the forest. When you reach the end of the forest, turn immediately left, cross the meadow and enter the Mont Perrou Forest. Find and take a path on the right-hand side (ruined stone wall on the left). You will come to a crossroads.

(8) Follow a beautiful stone path to the left. View of the Ajoie and the villages of La Baroche.

(9) At the junction, take the path on the right which descends gently.

(10) When you reach a T-junction, turn left onto the path leading down to the village of Charmoille.

(11) You will come to a small tarmac road; take it to the right. Walk through the village of Charmoille to the church.

(12) Go round the church to the left via Rue Vie des Fossés. Follow this road for 1.5 km to the Col des Esserts (table and bench).

(13) After the pass, follow the Red Diamond path which heads into the forest, ignoring the trailheads on the left. 100 m after reaching the border, enter France and follow this path for 1.5 km until you emerge from the forest, where you will see the village of Levoncourt. Continue along the path and then the road, crossing the D411. Walk up Rue de l’École, heading towards the church, and you’ll reach the car park (S/E).

Thanks to the creator of this circular walk, which we extended by stopping off at Lucelle for lunch.
We wanted to go all the way to the summit of Mont Perrou... a daft idea as there doesn’t seem to be a path leading there! It did allow us to spot a wild boar and startle a deer
As mentioned in the other comments, the paths aren’t all very well marked, but we liked that because we prefer off-the-beaten-track trails!!
We’re really happy with our outing – thanks again for posting it! !

That’s surprising, because between points 8 and 9 there’s a forest track used by forestry vehicles.
Just to be sure, I’ll check it out.

A lovely walk
We took a little detour to visit Morimont Castle; it’s worth walking around it – it’s impressive
The path between points 8 and 9 is overgrown – it’s a real jungle! Luckily, I’m using GPS
From history to the water lilies
A hike worth doing

A lovely walk to Levoncourt via Charmoille, with stunning scenery all the way, including views of Morimont. Make sure you follow the route carefully, as we had to turn back twice. I reckon the paths haven’t been used for quite some time, but that didn’t bother us – we were out for an adventure.

A lovely walk on a mild, spring-like day (31/12/22)
When you reach point 2 (at the shortcut leading to the upper section of the same path), don’t hesitate to continue straight on for about 300 m to find the giant oak (remarkable, over 500 years old) below you on your right.
Then retrace your steps along the path leading up to Les Ebourbettes

A lovely route, made all the better by the glorious weather at the end of October.
