Tour of the Buthiers Caves

A walk through the forest of the Île de Loisirs de Buthiers, taking in caves, rocks and forest paths.
The southern circular route is fairly easy and smooth, offering beautiful forest views, whilst the northern circular route is more technical, with several challenging sections over rocky terrain.

Description of the walk

Park in the Espace Partage car park, climbing hall.

(S/E) Take the tarmac road, the Allée des Sables, which runs between the buildings of the leisure park. You will arrive opposite the leisure park reception.

(1) Turn left, then cross the road and take a small uphill path leading off to the right. Cross a sandy track and go round the buildings, with a fence on your left. Cross a track suitable for vehicles towards the rock area.

(2) Pass beneath the Roche aux Amis and then climb up via the path between the rocks. Once on the plateau, enjoy the view and then head off to the left. Pass in front of a rock shelter and then climb up a fairly steep path on the right. You will reach a crossroads of paths in the Vaucelet woods.

(3) Take a small path on the left as you climb and follow it for a short while until you reach a crossroads. Go straight on. Admire the view over the plateau, then take the path descending to the right to join a track below. Follow this for a few metres, then turn left onto a track that climbs, levels out and eventually descends again. Follow the markings and take a barely visible path that climbs to the right and leads back to the plateau.

(4) Walk past the Grotte de la Hache and continue straight on. Viewpoint over the aquatic centre at the Buthiers leisure park on the left. Continue straight on until you reach a track suitable for vehicles. Take this to the right and head for the car park.

(S/E) Cross the road and follow the markings through the rocks. There are several narrow passages in this area, so watch your head. Once on the plateau, take the ascending path opposite.

(5) Turn left, follow the edge of the field and take the first right into the woods. Take the winding descent to the right. Be careful, the path slopes slightly.

(6) Take the path uphill to the left, then the first right onto the trail. Take a hairpin bend to start a sandy descent and go straight on after crossing a wide track onto a barely visible path. You’ll reach a ledge path which you follow to the left.

(7) Descend into the rock shelter and turn around as you exit to admire it. Then continue leftwards through the rocks (technical section). Climb straight back up through the sand pit.

(8) Once at the top, turn around to admire the view of the town of Malesherbes. Take the path to the left. Then head back down towards the campsite.

(9) Cross the access road to the campsite and follow a path veering slightly to the right. Descend through the rocks via a technical section. Walk along the cliff, sometimes at the top, sometimes at the bottom. Pass close to the Auberge Canard. Then continue along the route until you return to the Espace Partage car park (S/E).

This walk is a lovely alternative to the Forest of Fontainebleau. Some of the rocky sections may be challenging for inexperienced walkers, but in my opinion and that of my companions, this walk is generally best classified as moderate rather than difficult.

Hello,
The route is varied overall, shaded but crossed by numerous paths. Despite the blue markings, which seem to be the colour for this cave tour, we had some doubts in certain places.
The northern loop along the Fontainebleau road is a bit noisy. There are a few dangerous sections that are poorly signposted.

The signposting leaves a lot to be desired and is in dire need of an overhaul. For a novice who isn’t used to reading signposts, getting lost is a certainty!!
As a hiker and guide myself, I found it difficult to follow but very interesting, varied and technical in places.

The route isn’t very difficult. There are sections where you have to go between, over or under the rocks, but that’s part of its charm. It is possible to go round them.

Due to a lack of time, I only completed the second section (the northern circular loop). The blue markings are very clear; you don’t need a GPS.
A very pretty route, with sections over rocky terrain (at the start, around the 8 km mark, and between 9 km and the finish), the rest being along winding paths through the woods. Major drawback: sections 6 and 7 run alongside the road and it’s very noisy. Don’t hesitate to take a shortcut.
The so-called technical sections involve climbing up and down rocks or crawling underneath them, sometimes on all fours. It’s great fun, but if you don’t feel up to it, the ‘obstacles’ can be bypassed. There are plenty of paths; you can zigzag between the rocks as you please.
Do this for the fun and the peaceful woodland, without lingering in the north, due to the noise from the cars.

The first circular route is suitable for everyone, whereas the second is much more challenging but well worth doing again
