Description of the walk

(S/E) Start from the Salle du Parc car park. Walk past the Salle du Parc to reach Place de l’Église. Turn left and follow Rue du Puits to Place de la Liberté.

(1) Turn left onto Rue du Panzay and immediately right onto Rue des Sept Cheminée, which goes round a block to join Rue de Bouteville. Cross over, follow Rue des Écoles straight ahead, then take the first left.

(2) Walk between the town hall and the school to reach Rue de la Borderie and turn left to quickly reach Rue de la Platière (an extension of Rue de Bouteville).

(3) On leaving the village, at the bend, take the path leading off to the right. Pass through a barrier then follow the boundary walls of Cramahé Castle. Cross the D111 (Rue de la Borderie) and take the grassy path opposite (Chemin des Saulniers). Leave Rue de Plaisance on your right then, at the end, turn right towards the water tower (visible from a distance).
When you reach Rue du Moulin, turn left towards the D939 (La Rochelle – Angoulême). After about 800m, at the ‘Bus Yello’ sign, turn right towards La Richarderie.

(4) Walk past the farm and continue straight on along a dirt track (muddy in wet weather). The track soon passes through the middle of a hedge to join the D109 or Rue du Mississipi, which links Salles-sur-Mer to Grolleau. Cross the road and take the track opposite, which joins Rue de Salles, not far from the recycling centre visible on the left.

(5) Cross the road and continue straight ahead on Chemin du Collet (or de Roncevaux), marked in yellow. Pass the “Roncevaux” farm and continue straight on to the D111. Turn right for 300m, then follow a small path marked in yellow to the left.

(6) Cross a small road which can be used as an alternative route in bad weather and continue to the small wood. Turn right then immediately left to reach a path which may be impassable in wet weather. (see alternative route in the Practical Information section).

(7) Turn left, follow this path to the end and turn right onto the D203 towards the village.

(8) After about 450m (end of the alternative route), turn right onto a path signposted “Piste cyclable” (cycle path) until you reach the D111. Cross it, then take the path opposite and slightly to the left, which is blocked by a chain and turns left after 150m. Go through a wooden gate to finally reach the centre of the village on the D109.

Turn right and cross the roundabout to reach the car park (S/E).

The centre of the village of Salles-sur-Mer is typical and well-maintained. The walk itself isn’t particularly interesting, but it takes place in a very peaceful setting (mainly fields). The paths are easy, with a few short stretches along the road.

This route was completed on 18 December and offers a wonderful glimpse of the Aunis region. It was very muddy on the approach to Salles due to horses having passed through.

A castle and a mill well worth a visit, information boards along part of the route, a charming village, local produce at the mini-market – all in all, an easy and relaxing walk.
