Depart from the Baie d'Yves car park on the RD137 in the direction of La Rochelle-Rochefort. Once at the rest area, park about a hundred metres further on in a dirt car park on the right.
(S/E) To reach the trail, go to the end of this dirt car park and take the path on the left to reach the ocean.
(1) Once on the beach, turn left at the end of the sea wall. When you reach the Ferme du Rocher, turn left and join a small road.
(2) Leave it immediately by turning right to go around the Ferme du Rocher and arrive at the edge of the cliff (the initial path on the right is closed). Then stay on the coastal path until you reach Fouras. Near the Fief des Roches, after the first carrelet in Fouras, stay on the path that borders the fields.
(3) About 50 metres from a hedge of thorns preventing you from continuing straight ahead, take the path on the right through the undergrowth. Continue along the coastal path at the edge of the fishing huts. Pass the retirement home and then a campsite. When you reach Boulevard de la Mer, continue straight ahead along the north beach.
(4) At the small port at the end of the north beach, go up to the pedestrian crossing on the left and join the roundabout on the D937. Cross the departmental road to join the path through the woods and head towards the casino on the left.
(5) Go around the casino and, after crossing Avenue du Bois Vert, turn left and take Place Bugeau to reach the Grand Plage. Continue towards Fort Vauban, which is in front of you.
(6) After a quick visit to the fort, continue your walk southwards and walk along the Place Vauban fort car park. Take the stairs at the end of the car park, walk past the harbour master's office and head for the south beach.
(7) Cross the beach, reach its main entrance and go back up the road. Head north on Boulevard de la Mer and follow it to its end to reach the north beach. Turn right and take the same path back in the opposite direction.
(2) At the Rocher farm, turn right to access the car park directly via the rest area (S/E).
In fact, I added the Chatelaillon/Baie d'Yves route to this hike. The trail is well marked and very easy to access. At low tide, it is possible to walk along the beach. I estimate the total distance to be around 13 km. It took us a good 3 hours and 15 minutes to walk from the centre of Chatelaillon to the esplanade of Fort de Fouras. At no point do you walk on a road, just a few bicycles use this path. In short, a beautiful hike with beautiful scenery.
