Description of the walk

Start at the current Henvic church, the one opposite the town hall.

(S/E) Walk up Rue de la Mairie towards Taulé.

(1) At the junction with Rue de la Vieille Garenne, turn left towards the cemetery. Keep the cemetery on your right and cross the bridge over the Saint-Pol–Morlaix dual carriageway

(2) At the Penn an Allé junction, turn right towards Le Frout. Follow the village road to the end.

(3) Cross the main road (D73) with care and turn left onto the path leading to the Ty Nod oyster farm. Go round it and head up the path overlooking the coast. Follow it until you reach a stretch of road leading to the Clouët Beach car park.

(4) Walk along the beach and past the golf course behind it. At a fork, stay by the sea towards the Porz Trez oyster farm.

(5) At the end of these, head inland as there is no coastal continuation ofthe GR®34. At the roundabout, turn right onto Rue de Penn Al Lann for about a hundred metres and turn right onto a street that leads back towards the seafront.

(6) Walk around the Pointe de Penn al Lann, enjoying magnificent views of the harbour, Île Noire, Île Louët and the Château du Taureau. Continue along a succession of beaches.

(7) Leave the coastal path briefly to head to Pointe de Cosmeur, retrace your steps and rejoin theGR®34trail, crossing the beaches of Cosmeur, Penquer and Kelenn.

(8) Continue along the cliff top overlooking the coast.

(9) Pass the Chaise du Curé viewpoint and continue to Grève Blanche, where you can access Île Callot via a submersible causeway, then arrive at the harbour.

(10) Continue along the beach (or follow the streets inland during high tides with a high tidal range).

(11) You’ll come to a stretch of road in front of Les Mouettes campsite. Continue straight on along the path that runs between two fields. At a T-junction, turn right and follow the road to Keryénévet.

(12) Quickly turn onto a path on the right which soon bends sharply left at a 90° angle and joins the end of the Route du Lingoz. At this T-junction, turn right towards the beach, then left into the car park.

(13) Just before Pointe du Lingoz, turn left, follow the path and emerge at the end of Rue Guéguen. Turn right to follow the beach. Pass under the Pont de la Corde and walk along the quayside to the Sainte-Marguerite Chapel.

(14) Head left up the path alongside the chapel via the Chemin de Kerantreis, which leads to a bend in Rue du Moulin du Brand. Continue straight on along this road, which runs alongside the dual carriageway before veering away as it climbs.

(15) At the T-junction, take the road on the right. Pass a cross at an intersection and continue straight on towards Henvic. Turn right into the school car park. At the end of the car park, turn left then right to return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Alternative route available at the start and end of the walk to minimise walking on roads with relatively little traffic.
Some sections may be submerged at high tide, particularly the quays at the Pont de la Corde and the Grande Grève south of Carantec: alternative routes allow you to bypass these submerged sections.

As the weather wasn’t great and the whole route is quite long, we only did part of it (about 15 km, all the same).
From Roscoff, where we’re on holiday, we took the number 29 bus to Henvic, at the Pont de la Corde.
From there we followed the GR, but starting in the opposite direction to the route described and therefore taking the return path. It was high tide. After the Les Mouettes campsite, we took a detour inland at La Grande Grève. Up to the port of Carantec, the landscape was disappointing: fields, tarmac, an industrial estate. Île Callot was inaccessible. We continued on our way along the coastal path: magnificent views, a path that was sometimes steep with quite a few steps, very varied and fragrant vegetation, and various types of trees. Splendid. Picnic on Kelenn beach (benches, restaurant, crêperie). This magnificent coastal path leads to an arboretum, which was unfortunately inaccessible and, it seems, opens from 1 October – the date from which it is advisable to continue the GR 34 via the arboretum due to more frequent movement of machinery in the oyster bed area… which we therefore had to pass through. From Penn al Lann, we improvised a shortcut by crossing through Carantec to return to the Camping des Mouettes and catch the bus at Pont de la Corde. In short, a lovely coastal route, but one that requires a rather unattractive approach through streets, fields and industrial estates. It is well worth it, however.

The scenery on the islands around Carantec is absolutely stunning.
Some difficulty following the route (signposts hidden or missing).

It’s a shame there’s a bit of tarmac at the start, but luckily it’s not very busy; after that, it’s pure joy! A really lovely route

A very pleasant walk. You can extend the route to Ile Calot at low tide. Very little elevation gain. Around two-thirds of the walk is on tarmac roads with little traffic. Walk completed on 11 September, extending to Calot – 23 km as advertised.
