Callot Island and the beaches of Carantec

The Carantec headland, between the estuaries of the Penzé and the Rivière de Morlaix, extends to Île Callot. This walk, which should be started at low tide and when the tidal range is low, takes you around the whole island before following the north coast of Carantec, from beach to beach. At the end of the route, you can also explore the Claude-Goude Arboretum Park.

Description of the walk

Warning! Submersiblecauseway – see practical information.

In Carantec, park in the car park near the church.

(S/E) Walk round the church on the left, then follow the one-way street past the bakery, Rue Colbert. At the junction, first turn right then left, then, at the T-junction, turn left. Ignore a street on the left and go straight on down a narrow lane. You’ll come to a T-junction.

(1) Turn right (Rue Neuve). At the end of the street, turn left, pass a mural shortly afterwards, reach the hill and follow the street to the right to reach the start of the submersible road.

(2) Check the permitted access times. If there are at least three hours of access remaining, make a note of the end of the permitted time slot and set off along the road. In 2026, the road has subsided in the middle, which reduces the permitted time slot. In this case, after about 150 m on the road, turn left towards the west, then head north towards the small embankment between two islets. Continue north-east to reach the island at the end of the submersible road. (Some people stay on the road and cross by taking off their shoes).

(3) Continue along the road, pass a tidal basin created by the sculptor Xtophe, ignore the paths on the right, take a short detour to the right up the embankment towards an information board and the seaweed kiln, and arrive at the junction with a path (the return route).

(4) Continue along the road.

(5) Further on, ignore the first access to the beach on the right, then another one shortly afterwards. Then follow the path which climbs towards the Chapel of Notre-Dame de Callot. Visit this chapel dedicated to the protection of sailors, then continue northwards along the path which is closed to cyclists.

(6) The route now begins a short circular loop around this northern tip of the island, the wildest part. With the Tourelle Mazarin quite close on your left and a clearly visible cross opposite, take a path to the right (use the Visorando app for guidance). Ignore a path on the left. At the four-way junction just after this, walk a few more steps straight ahead to a viewpoint, then return to the four-way junction and follow the path on the right. Keep to the right at the next junction, then head towards the cross and the orientation table.

(7) At the orientation table, head left, then follow the path towards the turret. At the four-way junction, for a round trip, go straight on and ignore the paths that do not lead to the turret, as these are closed trails a little further on. Reach the turret, enjoy the view, then return to the junction of the four paths and turn right. Carry straight on, ignoring the few paths on either side, until you eventually reach the junction you passed on the way there.

(6) Follow the route back in the opposite direction to the chapel, then follow the road. Further on, ignore the first ‘Beach Access’.

(5) Turn left at the second ‘Beach Access’ sign and head right onto the beach, then take the path towards the houses. Continue along a track; further on, ignore a path on the left and return to the junction you passed on the way out.

(4) Follow the route back in the opposite direction to the submersible causeway, then follow this back towards Carantec. Just before the end of the causeway, look out for a staircase in a wall on the left and head towards it, then climb up.

(8) Turn left onto Rue de la Grève Blanche, marked with red and white GR® signposts. Follow these GR® signposts until otherwise indicated. You’ll reach the first beach, Grève Blanche, which the GR® route follows. At the end of the beach, follow the concrete path running along the cliff edge to reach another beach, which you’ll also need to cross. At the far end, you’ll come to a road; follow this.

(9) At the junction shortly afterwards, take the path on the left. Walk along the top of Chaise du Curé Beach, then pass the headland of the same name. You’ll reach a promenade.

(10) Follow it along Kelenn Beach, then continue along a path. Walk above Plenquer Beach and then Cosmeur Beach.

(11) Walk past Pointe du Cosmeur, then walk above Roc’h Gored Beach and then Tahiti Beach.

(12) At Pointe de Penn al Lann, turn left, pass near a navigation mark, then take the path on the left. Continue to the oyster farm.

(13) Once you reach the road, carry on straight ahead, then head up the hairpin bend to the right. Take the path on the left and enter the Claude-Goude Arboretum. Climb the steps up to the esplanade, then continue uphill through the park, following either a series of steps (as shown on the route map) or the gentler paths. Discover some beautiful trees. At the top, leave the park onto a street in Carantec. Follow it to the left.

(14) At the junction with a painted electricity substation, carry on straight ahead and ignore the side streets. At the roundabout, leave the GR® and turn right onto Rue du Garros.

(15) At the junction with the Bir-Hakeim memorial, turn left onto Rue René Cassin. Further on, there is a beautiful wash house on the left. Across the road, you can visit a wetland area. Continue straight on along Rue de Lolory towards the church and return to the car park (S/E). Sculpture by Pierre Chanteau.

Notes

Hike of medium to easy difficulty; standard hiking kit required.

Warning! The causeway may be submerged: start the walk at low tide and when the tidal range is low. At the entrance to the causeway, a timetable shows the exact times for crossing. Please note that it takes at least 2 hours to walk around the island without taking any long breaks. Please also note that the permitted time slots have been reduced due to the collapse of a section of the road.
