Lanner Bounds

Starting at the water tank, on Lanner Hill, then walking past Carn Marth open-air theatre, Figgy Dowdy's Well, and up to Carn Marth with the far-reaching views of the North and South Coast of the county. The route then follows designated footpaths down to Carharrack, following a road back to Lanner and then climbing back up the valley to the disused rail track, returning to the start.

This walk could be completed in two sections (S) to (4), catch a convenient bus back towards Redruth, and the bus stop at the top of the hill. The second leg (E) on a reverse path to (4), again catching the bus, as above.

The time taken will depend on the pace and time spent exploring the area

This is a moderate walk due to the climb up from the Lanner valley, so late in the walk.

Description of the walk

Start: Starting at or parking near to -W3W-according.sporting.amaze, Postcode (TR16 5SZ). Grid Ref. SW709 403. The location is adjacent to the local Lanner and District Silver Band building. Usually, there is never a problem finding a sensible parking spot.

(S/E) From the above starting point, walk northwest alongside the building, meeting up with the road again, turning right (The route was plotted around the road; this was to have sight of potential parking areas.) heading northeast to the main A393 road junction. Cross the road to Carn Marth Lane and follow, bearing right at the turn to Disused mine workings (engine house). Follow the designated track up the hill, past 'Figgy Dowdy's Well, and the open-air theatre to the top of Carn Marth.

(1) At the top of Carn Marth, take in the views to the south (see map at the viewing point). Continue right on track (east) downhill. Cross the road and continue on the track to the gate.

(2) At the gate, follow the path, down through the wooded area, past 'The Shute' continue down the road, then path behind houses to the road at the bottom. Cross the road over the foot bridge and onto another main road.

(3) At the road head southwest for approximately 2km (follow the highway code, use pavements where present). At the bend in the road at Trevarth, follow the road around to the right. This will lead to Lanner past the Inn. Cross the main road. Alternative Route: At this point, consider the next leg; it is a climb to get to the top. See introduction for other options.

(4) As the road climbs, it will turn to track. This is a 'little' climb, consider pace and ensure rests when needed. The track bends to the left and right several times.

(5) At the top of the hill, meeting the disused mining rail track, northwest and follow 1.5km to the start (S/E).

Note: This walk could be walked in either direction, but we would suggest the way plotted.
