Description of the walk

Start: Starting at or parking near W3W-according.sporting.amaze, Postcode (TR16 5SZ). Grid Ref. SW709 403. The location is adjacent to the local Lanner and District Silver Band building. Usually, there is never a problem finding a sensible parking spot.

(S/E) From the above starting point, walk northwest alongside the building, meeting up with the road again. Turning right, head northeast to the main A393 road junction. Cross the road to Carn Marth Lane and follow, bearing right at the turn to the disused mine workings (engine house).

(1) Turn left up the concrete track, turn right, continue along the track for approximately 300m, walking past the information board and quarry entrance (open air theatre) [Note: Figgy Dowdy's Well is just before the notice board, access is through the hedge on the right. The vegetation can overgrow the access down the steps to the Well. Explore the quarry, see the seating etc]. Proceed up to the top of the hill.

(2) Turn left, westwards, to Carn Marth viewpoint, and the 'Trig Point', seeing North and South coast and 360° views. Proceed northwest (right at the fork) along the track above the disused quarry [Note: Look for the drill holes in the quarry face. This was an old test site for a local manufacturer of pneumatic drills used in the mines]. Continue down the track to the gravel lane, and the junction with the road turning left, after the water tank.

(3) Turn left and follow the bridle path signage, past some dwellings, then left onto a track [Note: This section can get overgrown with vegetation but is passable]. After 600m, a change in the track, see a garage and a choice of direction change.

(4) At this point, if you want to shorten the route, see note below. To complete the route, continue west for 150m, and the track comes out onto Old Sandy Lane. Cross the lane and then cross the main A393 with care. Continue west along The Paddock and continue along the footpath directly ahead between the houses. Cross the B3300 and turn left (southeast) to the junction, then after 50m turn right (southwest) to the end of the road.

[Note: Shortened Route - turn left and follow the track around to the right, meeting up with the A393 main road. Turn left to the roundabout and left up the hill to the 'Carn Marth Lane/Tram Cross Lane' and the start.]

(5) At Redruth Town Football Ground, make your way around these open-access pitches; dogs must be on a lead, and keep to the designated footpath [Note: On the Ordinance Survey map, the designated footpath has moved to a permitted footpath around the football pitches].

(6) At the gate, turn left onto a farm drive and continue southeast, past the farm. (As the route follows a permitted footpath through farmland, due consideration for the farmer's crops, keep dogs under control.) Passing the farm buildings to the end of a track to a field, the route is up and left, which means walking around the edge of the field. The route becomes clear as you follow around the field edge. Continue 1 km to the dismantled railway line and onto houses. At the road cross southeast with the huge water tank on the right to the end of the lane (S/E).

Practical information

Alternative starts and parking :
1. Starting at or parking near to -W3W-according.sporting.amaze, Postcode (TR16 5SZ). Grid Ref. SW709 403.
2. As this is a circular route, start from any of the access points along the route, please park sensibly.

Note: This walk could be walked in either direction, but we would suggest the way plotted. The hill is conquered fresh in the walk and less height to gain from the lowest point in the walk.

Dog policy: Dogs are permitted but must be kept under control, and some areas to be kept on a lead.

Terrain: The route follows paths, tracks, and roads. Ensure that the relevant highway and country codes are followed. Note: Parts of the path can become overgrown with vegetation.

Transport: There is a frequent bus service/route that passes near the start - 'Tram Cross Lane and Carn Marth Lane'. This is the Redruth to Falmouth bus. Walkers will need to confirm the timings of the bus for drop off and allow sufficient time to walk the route.

Facilities: There are no facilities along the whole route
