Tête de Bostan via the Pas de la Latte

The Tête de Bostan offers a superb panorama of the higher peaks very close to the Dents Blanches and Dents d'Oddaz. This hike offers an ascent of this summit via the original and wild Pas de la Latte route. The descent is via the more usual Col de la Golèse route.

Description of the walk

Departure from Pont de la Chardonnière. Park in the small car park on the right just after the bridge; if there is no space, do not cross the bridge and park along the track that extends from the access road.
The bridge is accessible from Morzine via a small road towards Lac des Mines d'Or. After passing the hamlets of Érigné derrière and Érigné devant, turn slightly right at the crossroads (ignore the road on the left that leads to the lake).

(S/E) Head south, with the stream on your right, on a track towards the Refuge de Chardonnière. The track quickly turns east-southeast, crosses a sparse forest, turns south and crosses the Torrent de Chardonnière before reaching the refuge.

(1) Turn left and leave the refuge on your right. Wind your way along the edge of the forest and then through a meadow, heading generally east at first and then north-east. You will come out onto a wider path (not shown on the 1:25,000 map). Follow it to the right through wooded terrain and you will soon reach a junction near the Torrent de Chardonnière.

N.B. On the next two sections, the purple line on the IGN map is approximate. A few signposts and yellow markings can be used as landmarks.

(2) Turn right (east), still in wooded terrain. You will soon come to a meadow and continue east-southeast until you reach the foot of a rock face.

(3) Then turn right (south) and proceed along a rocky corridor that narrows as you climb. Take a ledge at the foot of the wall and cross a rock step, the Pas de la Latte (use your hands). You will then quickly reach the ridge.

(4) Follow the ridge to the left (east-northeast) and climb steadily to the summit (the purple line on the IGN map passes below the summit).

(5) Descend the ridge by the same route to the Pas de la Latte exit point.

(4) Continue descending along the ridge (west-southwest). At an elevation of 1975 metres, the slope becomes steeper, the path makes a few turns and ends at a three-way junction.

(6) Turn right (west). Head north, leaving the Refuge de la Golèse on your left, and reach an intersection with an alpine track.

(7) Follow the mountain pasture track to the right (you are now on theGR®5, marked in red and white). Ignore the access to the Bonnevalette chalets on the left.

(8) At the next intersection, stay on the track that turns left (leaving theGR® trail on your right). Pass the Vigny chalets, ignore a turnoff on the left and continue downhill on the track which, after several bends, arrives at the Pont de Chardonnière bridge (S/E).

A detailed map is required (at least the one accompanying this description). A compass may be useful.

Additional information:
It is possible to climb the Dents Blanches from the Tête de Bostan. From the summit (5), descend on the east side, pass under the Tête des Verdets and reach the Col de Bostan (spelled Bossetan in Switzerland). Then follow the Dent du Signal hike from the Barme chalets starting from its point (4). After climbing the Dent Occidentale, or even the Dent du Signal, retrace your steps. At the Col de Bostan, continue north-west, pass under the summit of the Tête de Bostan and join the ridge to the east and upstream of the point (4) of this hike.
Allow for a total elevation gain of around 1,600 metres, with some tricky and exposed sections, classified as Very Difficult.

Hike completed by the author, with the Dents Blanches supplement, on 12 August 1982.

Worth a visit

- Ascent in the wild setting of the Terres Maudites, between (3) and (4).
- From the summit (5), superb panorama of the Dents Blanches and Dents d'Oddaz, which are very close, as well as the Dents du Midi.
- Pleasant walk along the ridge between (5) and (6).

I was inspired by this hike to do a loop starting from the gold mine lake.

A very beautiful hike with a superb view of Mont Blanc.
There was still a little snow in August, so be careful if you do it before then.

(this route is not part of the original hike)
I came back down via the GR after the small stone refuge at the Col de Bossetan
Be careful, the paths are very dangerous, making the hike very difficult. There are some very tricky sections, steep scree with a high risk of falling and rock slides, and sections on the mountainside with chains, etc.
That's what I like about this kind of hike, but honestly, if you're not prepared, don't attempt it. In my opinion, there is a real risk of falling/death.
There are, of course, other more accessible routes down the mountain.

We only encountered one young lady on our way up to the start of the Pas de la Latte... The advantage of this route is that it runs along the north side, so there is little sun in the morning, which is welcome during heatwaves.

Hello,

A very beautiful hike, best done in fair weather, partly cloudy... Because the parts you have to climb in the sun can be tough!

The section before the Pas de la Latte, in a sort of sloping field, is very difficult to navigate... But it can be done.

Everything else is well marked... The highest point, Tête de Bostan, is magnificent – you feel like you're somewhere else entirely.

We did part of this hike today.

The description needs to be changed because there is a very tricky section on the climb up to the Pas de la Latte: a section that is almost like climbing on a steep slab for about 200 metres and less than 100 metres of elevation gain, which requires good mountain skills and a head for heights. Although technically not very difficult, falling during the ascent is prohibited and gave my companion quite a scare.

Otherwise, the rest of the route is very pleasant and varied, with magnificent views of the surrounding area!

A pleasant and varied climb (forest, meadow, rocky terrain). Easy to follow route. The step ladder is very easy to use in dry weather (even for novice hikers). The view from the summit is very good (though not breathtaking).
Unfortunately, the descent is monotonous and endless... This spoils the fun a little.

The Pas de Latte pass is quite technical, with tricky rocky sections that are only suitable for experienced walkers, especially given the recent rain, which has made the ground slippery.
It would be a good idea to point this out so that no one ventures onto this path, especially the ledge where there are no cables or other safety features.
Thank you for this route.

Hike completed on Thursday, 29 July 2021, in beautiful weather.
The description and comments were helpful to me, and now it's my turn to confirm that on the climb to Pas de la Latte, there are many yellow markers to guide you, and that the dry riverbed is another landmark, which you should leave on your right and not cross. The path becomes a little more complicated when it crosses the rocks, but it is neither difficult nor dangerous, especially as the pass is reached fairly quickly afterwards. There is just a snowfield to go around at the moment (29/07, very hard snow).
The route along the ridge towards Tête de Bostan is very pleasant, with fantastic scenery and flower-filled meadows, until you reach the Bostan pass, from where you can tackle the Dent Blanche Occidentale (1 hour 20 minutes of climbing, steep but with a fairly clear trail, well worth it for the views and the flora).
I also returned via the Bostan refuge, which makes for a nice circular loop and a change of scenery.
A superb route from start to finish that I highly recommend.

A very beautiful hike, difficult and sometimes aerial and technical. The start is in Morzine, not Samoëns. We did the route in the opposite direction by mistake. In this direction, the final descent into the scree is difficult and long. I think it's better to follow the normal direction in order to do the Pas de la Latte on the way up. Be prepared to work up a sweat, it's steep... wild, no one around... the reward is at the top for a picnic... We didn't see Mont Blanc because of the heat haze. Beautiful view of the top of the Avoriaz slopes, Switzerland and the Rhone Valley...

Indeed, you need to be careful when leaving the forest (point 2) so as not to lose the path that winds its way up the meadow, climbing with the stream on your right.
This is a tricky section requiring you to climb over rocks.

Be careful when leaving the forest so as not to lose the path that continues into the meadow; regular but sometimes faint yellow markings help you find your way. Once you reach the rocky section, be very careful: when it has recently rained, the ground can be slippery, and the barely visible path is narrow and bordered by cliffs.
This route is only suitable for experienced walkers with good footwear who are not afraid of heights.
Instead of returning directly via the Col de la Golèse, the circular route from the Tête de Bostan then via the Col de Bostan, the Bostan refuge and finally the Col de la Golèse is an interesting alternative that allows you to see a varied landscape. The complete circular route is 16 km in total.
