In the footsteps of Gargantua around Marcilly-sur-Tille

A short, easy walk around the village of Marcilly-sur-Tille, which is situated on the River Ignon and not on the River Tille as its name suggests, passing by the Étang de Venarde where you can see many birds (depending on the season). You’ll walk along the River Ignon, with its wash house and old mill, and reach Mont de Marcilly, where you’ll enjoy a magnificent view over the Tille Valley.

Description of the walk

Park in the small car park after the school on Rue de la Vignotte.

(S/E) From the car park, take the path on the right and continue right onto the dirt track leading to Rue de la Planchote. Turn left onto this street and continue to the power station.

(1) Cross the two bridges over the railway line and the Venarde. At the fork, turn right and continue along this path to the pond, ignoring the paths branching off to the left.

(2) Continue along the pond to the small road, cross it and carry on straight ahead. Cross the railway line, ignore the path on the right that runs alongside the railway line and continue to the D112.

(3) Turn right onto the hard shoulder (wide enough to avoid walking on the road for safety) for about 500 m.

.(4) Leave the D112 and turn right onto the stony track, staying on it until the T-junction at the entrance to the village. Take the second street on the right, Rue de l’Étang de Venarde.

(5) Cross the railway line, turn left onto Rue du Cerceau and continue to Rue Jean Martin. Cross it, continue along Rue du Potet for a few metres and turn left onto Rue du Bas until you reach Grande Rue. On your right you will see the dovecote in its tower.

(6) Continue right along this street to the town hall. Cross over and take the grassy path to the left of the town hall which leads down towards Rue du Moulin. Take this street and walk there and back to the wash house.

(7) Return to Rue du Moulin, which runs alongside the River Ignon.

(8) Continue along this path. You can see the old mill on the other side of the Ignon. Leave the estate’s streets to your left at the bend, continue to the Grande Rue, turn right for a few metres, cross over and take Rue de la Vignotte. Turn immediately left into Impasse de la Roche à l’Âne and continue to the bend. Leave this cul-de-sac and take the small path on the left which climbs into the woods to reach Mont de Marcilly.

(9) At the three-way junction, keep left to reach the summit of the hill and its superb view over the Tille valley and the surrounding villages. Go round the first mast and take the path leading off to the right in front of thesecond mast to head back down. Cross the small access road to the masts and head straight down. Ignore the path on the right, continue to the T-junction, turn right and then left at the next crossroads to rejoin the stone path. Turn right and continue along the housing estate to the car park where you started (S/E).

Worth a visit

(2) Venarde Pond. According to legend, it is a puddle of Gargantua’s urine.
(6) A dovecote housed in a tower that may have formed part of the local fortifications.
(9) Mont de Marcilly. According to legend, it was formed by clods of earth that fell from Gargantua’s boots and was once a Neolithic settlement. Covering an area of 10 hectares, it is of significant botanical value, home to four protected species and numerous birds.

A very pleasant walk along some excellent paths (apart from the track leading up to Mont de Marcilly, which is quite overgrown, but it’s not a long stretch). A route best avoided in hot weather (which wasn’t the case today…!)

Hi,
No problem parking
The first part of the route was lovely with fields, the lake... but the return journey through the houses was rather mediocre.
Best regards

We set off in gloomy weather, but the sun eventually came out, making the walk more pleasant.
The route is a bit uneven (hard to imagine it being any other way when you’re going through housing estates) but it has some lovely bits (the pond, the hillock, the banks of the Ignon).
The route is easy to follow, but the start needs reviewing (we got a bit confused, as we often do), as the car park no longer exists.
Thank you to everyone who puts so much effort into suggesting these routes!!!
