On the heights of Saverne from the Schweizerhof Forest House

This hike starts next to the Schweizerhof forest house, located 5 km from the Saverne exit, in the direction of Lutzelbourg. There are two superb viewpoints to discover, at the Rappenfels rock and the Saint-Vit cave.

Description of the walk

On leaving Saverne towards Lutzelbourg, along the Marne-Rhine Canal, after 500 metres a small sign indicating the Grotte de Saint Witt shows you the way. 5 km further on, you will arrive at the Schweizerhof car park near the forest house on the Herrgott forest road.

(S/E) Go to the end of the car park and turn right, heading south-west, to follow the Anneau Bleu route. Start the walk towards Stambach. Your walk begins with a long descent, keeping your bearings, which leads to Stambach, along the Marne-Rhine Canal.

(1) At the bottom of the descent, turn left to pass over lock 26 on your right. Continue along the flat path for about 20 minutes until you arrive opposite Stambach, near lock 27.

(2) At this point, turn left to begin the climb up Rappenfels. The climb is very steep on a narrow dirt track.

(3) When you reach the top of the slope, take a short detour to the left towards Rappenfels, two minutes away, where you can enjoy a superb view of the valley along the canal. Retrace your steps.

(3) Follow the Blue Ring trail markers north-east to reach the junction with a wide forest path.

(4) Turn right towards the Saint Vit Cave, leaving the marked trail. Stay on the main path until you reach the cave area.

(5) Enjoy the site and admire the view of Haut Barr Castle and the town of Saverne at your feet. Go down the steps to reach the small chapel in the cave. Begin the return journey from the bottom, following the path that branches off to the right. It climbs back up through the forest towards the path and then the crossroads you came to on the way up.

(4) Continue straight ahead, following the Blue Ring markings. A beautiful, gently sloping path leads you to the Schweizerhof car park (S/E).

Notes

Club Vosgien signposts

Walking shoes are required.
If you wish to start the route at the lowest point, you can go to "Stambach". Leave your car in the car park of the building and cross the canal at lock 27. This means you will start the walk with an uphill climb and the return will be downhill.

Worth a visit

The must-see sights outside the basic route are the Rappenfels and the Saint-Vit Cave. You will find some beautiful viewpoints and great photo opportunities.

It's a shame that the route from the start to point 1 is now completely devastated by foresters...
It's no longer a beautifully wooded path but a rutted boulevard ploughed by farm machinery.
Apart from that, it's a sporty walk, but a very pleasant one on a clear day, with superb views.

Splendid hike with a breathtaking viewpoint and a hidden garden and cave that are a must-see! No-one on the way. The only point of difficulty is a fairly steep and long climb, but it's rewarded with the view from Rappenfels.

I did this hike with 2 children, aged 7 and 9, and they enjoyed it as much as I did. The viewpoint at Rappenfels is a magnificent reward after the steep climb! There are lots of people at the Saint Vit cave, but it's a must-see.
