On leaving Saverne, head towards Lutzelbourg along the Marne–Rhine Canal; after 500 metres, a small sign for the Grotte de Saint Witt will show you the way. 5 km further on, you’ll reach the Schweizerhof car park near the forest ranger’s house on the Route forestière du Herrgott.
(S/E) Go to the far end of the car park, then turn right, heading south-west, onto the signposted ‘Blue Ring’ route. Start the walk towards Stambach. Your walk begins with a long descent, keeping the same direction, which leads you close to Stambach, along the Marne–Rhine Canal.
(1) At the bottom of the descent, take the track on the left to pass over Lock 26 on your right. Continue on level ground; after about 20 minutes, you’ll arrive opposite the hamlet of Stambach, near Lock 27.
(2) At this point, take the Rappenfels climb on the left. The climb is very steep along a narrow dirt track.
(3) Once at the top of the slope, take the short detour to the left towards Rappenfels, a two-minute walk away, where you can enjoy a superb view of the valley along the canal. Retrace your steps.
(3) Resume the route by following the Blue Ring signposting north-eastwards until you reach the junction with a wide forest track.
(4) Turn right towards the Grotte Saint-Vit, leaving the signposted route. Stay on the main path until you reach the entrance to the grotto.
(5) Take in the surroundings and admire the view of Château du Haut Barr and the town of Saverne at your feet. Go down the steps to reach the small chapel inside the cave. Begin your return journey from the bottom by following the path that branches off to the right. It climbs through the forest back towards the track and then the crossroads you passed on the way out.
(4) Continue to the right, following the Blue Ring markings. A lovely, gently ascending path leads you to the car park at the Schweizerhof (S/E).
