Free car park in Stambach on the D132.
(S/E) Head east towards Saverne and follow the road for about a hundred metres. Then take a path that enters a copse on the left (marked with a Yellow Saltire and Blue Rectangle). Cross the Zorn and then follow the Marne-Rhine Canal on your left.
(1) Shortly afterwards, cross the canal via the lock. Turn left then head up to the right. You’ll come out onto a path; follow it to the left to reach an immediate junction.
(2) Turn right and follow the winding path marked with Blue Rectangle signs. Cross a forest track, continue up the winding path and arrive at a T-junction.
(3) Turn left and you will soon reach the Rappenfels (viewpoint over Stambach).
(4) Return to the previous junction.
(3) Go straight on, following the Blue Rectangle signposting. After about 600 m, you’ll reach a junction with a forest track.
(5) Continue straight on following the same markings to quickly reach the Saint-Vit Grotto (do feel free to visit it and its beautiful garden). Looking towards the south-east, you will see the Haut-Barr and the Grand Geroldseck.
(6) With your back to the Saint-Vit garden, take the path opposite (Blue Rectangle markings;GR®®531). The path heads north, then turns north-east and reaches a fork.
(7) Keep left on theGR®®531(ignore the Red Saltire signpost leading off to the right). At the junction, head diagonally to the right and you will soon reach Greifenstein Castle.
(8) Walk around the castle following the Red Ring and Blue Ring markings. After a slight climb, the path leads to a junction.
(9) Turn slightly right and continue on level ground following the Red Ring and Blue Ring markings. Further on, pass the Bonne Source, which is on the left, and you’ll reach a Y-junction.
(10) Take the path on the right, which goes downhill and is marked with a Red Triangle. You will soon reach the Ramsthal Forest Road; note the Bavarian Spring on your right.
(11) Turn around and head back up to the previous junction.
(10) Turn right onto the uphill path marked with a Red Ring and a Yellow Saltire. You will reach the Herrgott Forest Road and the Schweizerhof Forest House.
(12) Follow the forest road to the left for about 200 m. Then turn right onto a downhill path marked with a Blue Ring and Yellow Saltire. Follow this steeply descending path to a junction with a path marked with a Red-White-Red Rectangle.
(13) Follow this path to the left and continue following the Blue Ring and Yellow Saltire markings. Descend slightly and walk along the Marne-to-Rhine Canal on your right. You will reach a junction you passed at the start of the walk.
(2) Follow the Yellow Saltire and Blue Rectangle on the right and descend immediately to the right to reach the canal. Cross the canal again at the lock.
(1) Turn left and cross the Zorn again. You’ll come out onto the D132; follow it to the right until you reach the car park (S/E).
A very beautiful hike; the St Vit cave site is well known and deserves its reputation, with its exceptional flowers.
