Stambach-Wasserwald, a charming trail

This route is a treat for those who love narrow paths and the peaceful atmosphere of the forests of the Northern Vosges.
There are several beautiful viewpoints and rocks along the route. You will also discover the archaeological site of Wasserwald, where our Celtic ancestors, known as the Mediomatrici by the Romans, lived more than 1,500 years ago.

Description of the walk

Depart from the car park opposite the large pink building at 20 Route de Lutzelbourg.

(S/E) Walk along the right-hand side of the D132 for about 60 metres. After the house, take the small path on the right that joins Route de Baerenbach. Cross the railway line and, immediately afterwards, take the path for a few dozen metres and continue to the right on a wide path (theGR®531). It joins the road at the Carrefour de Stambach after the water service building.

(1) Leave the road on your right (the return route). With your back to the information board, take the small road opposite for a few dozen metres until you reach the start of a path on your left. Follow this beautiful, long path marked with yellow signs along the hillside overlooking the Baerenbach stream (a tributary of the Zorn) to the Maisonnette de Pierre.

(2) Cross the small road and take the path on the left (yellow sign) along the other bank of the stream to the Baerenbach Forest House and a crossroads.

(3) Go up to the right on the path (yellow triangle/blue ring). After this long and beautiful climb through the woods, you will arrive at the Grosslimersberg crossroads. Turn left (blue-white-blue rectangle) and make a short detour to the magnificent CV Hultehouse chalet. See Practical Information.

(4) From the chalet, return to the crossroads and climb up, turning 90° to the left (green disc) to cross a path, then turn 90° to the right and head north. Further on, you will reach the Rochers Creux. See Practical Information.

(5) Immediately after, at the fork in the road, keep to the right, still following the green disc. Pass in front of the Source du Bannwald and, after the junction with a path, turn left uphill to reach a group of rocks with a viewpoint. See Practical Information.

(6) Continue on the green disc to reach Rocher du Muguet. See Practical Information.

(7) From the rock, return to the Green Disc/Yellow Ring marked trail, which now heads west. It climbs moderately to a wide curve that turns east and meets the Hultehouse Forest Road.

(8) Leave the Green Disc trail, turn left for a few metres and then turn right off the forest road to continue eastwards, following the Yellow Ring trail. You will arrive at the Wasserwald archaeological site.

(9) Turn right for about a hundred metres, then left towards the east. Wander among the ruins via the path that joins theGR®531(marked with blue and white rectangles) and, at the top, turn left.

(10) Before leaving Wasserwald, you can make a short detour to see Lorenzo Rock. To do so, turn left (red and yellow rings) at a wide left-hand bend and walk about 100 metres. Then veer slightly to the right to get there. See Practical Information.

(11) Retrace your steps back to the crossroads to rejoin theGR®531(Blue and White Rectangle).

(10) Leave the Red Ring markings and turn left onto the pretty winding descent, following theGR® and Yellow Ring markings. You will cross several crossroads until you reach the Hultehouse Forest Road.

(12) Turn right and continue downhill into the valley. You will arrive at the Carrefour de Stambach.

(1) Turn left and walk past the imposing drinking water service building. Return to the railway line and the path you took on the way there and follow it back to your starting point (S/E).

Notes

(2) Shelter: Maison de Pierre.

(4) Chalet du Club Vosgien Hultehouse for a short break with a view. There is a small shelter that is freely accessible, as well as several tables and benches.
For your information, this is the starting point for the boundary marker route. These markers date from 1727 and form a line separating the Hultehouse estate from that of the abbots of Marmoutier. Along the route, you will see some of these coats of arms: on one side an H and on the other a crozier crossing vertically through the letter M.

(5) The Rochers Creux served as a hiding place for the Malgré-Nous fugitives who were forcibly conscripted into the German army around 1942-1944.

(6) These rocks are well exposed and offer a beautiful view. They are a pleasant place for a midday picnic break.

(7) Rocher du Muguet: beautiful panorama and a bench to enjoy it from. View of Haut-Barr and the Geroldseck keep

(11) Rocher Lorenzo: these large, geometrically shaped boulders are used as a climbing site.

A lovely forest route with beautiful rocks to discover. The elevation gain is much greater than indicated. The 17.5 km route took 5.5 hours to complete, including breaks, with an elevation gain of 553 m.

A very beautiful route that matches its description.
In some places, following the directions could be a bit tricky if, like me, you don't use GPS tracking.

A beautiful circular completed on a Wednesday in January 2025 by a small group of hikers, the Branquignol(e)s (the famous group of epicurean hikers from Alsace);
Overall opinion very positive. It has almost everything: climbs and descents, trails, a few forest paths, a bit of tarmac at the start and finish, beautiful views along the circular route, picnic spots, shelters (Club Vosgien) and, above all, the surprising Rocher Lorenzo, not to be missed.

Sorry, we made two mistakes on the route; we didn't follow the instructions closely enough.
I think I'll do it again properly.
But it was still great, a superb hiking trail, carpeted in places.
Thanks... Jimi.

A rejuvenating route!
In the forest from start to finish, with very different vegetation along the way, so why not do it again in another season!

Hello Désiré,
Thank you for your message.
I'm glad you enjoyed my route. It was a good idea to do it in reverse. Did you like the restaurant?
Kind regards, Anne-Marie

A beautiful circular route taken in the opposite direction, with a stop for lunch at the restaurant in the village of Hultenhouse (adding 1.5 km to the route). Wonderful discoveries at the Gallo-Roman site of Wasserwald and views over the Zorn valley.
