On the limestone plateau at the start of Grèzes

This hike, which is not particularly difficult, takes walkers from the village of Grèzes to the cliffs overlooking the River Célé at Espagnac-Sainte-Eulalie. It then heads north to the Bélinac menhir (one of the few menhirs in the department) before returning to the village of Livernon and then Grèzes.
It mostly follows wide limestone paths, lined with moss-covered walls and shaded by oak trees.

Description of the walk

In Grèzes, park in a small car park on the edge of the D38 near its junction with the D13, not far from a small lake.

(S/E) Leave the D13 behind you and take the small road to the right of the lake and the D38. At the crossroads with a calvary, turn left towards Mas de Gubert. You will come to a crossroads (elevation 290).

(1) Turn left, still heading towards Mas de Gubert. Turn right just after the kennels onto a track suitable for vehicles.
Walk between the low walls and under the oak trees, coming out onto a small road at a place called Fourques Basses.

(2) Take the road on the left, with its beautiful restored houses. Walk past a dolmen on the left and reach a bend at elevation 298.

(3) Turn right onto the path towards Saint-Sulpice, Les Clauzélous. A track joins from the right; continue straight ahead, climbing slightly. There is a beautiful view on the left over Grèzes and, on the horizon, Saint-Bressou, the second highest peak in the department (618 m). You will reach Les Clauzélous, a crossroads forming a small tree-lined square.

(4) Turn right and cross Fourques Hautes. On the right, you will see a house with a swimming pool, then the crossroads at elevation 345.

(5) Immediately after the crossroads, take the path on the left (sign: Maison Clévacances). At the houses, turn right onto the path between the stone houses on the left and the wooden houses on the right. At a fork, continue to the right, then straight on to join theGR®651(white and red markings).

(6) Turn right onto this path, which is one of the routes to Santiago de Compostela. When you reach the D38 road, turn right and then quickly turn left onto a signposted dead-end road that leads to a pretty hamlet of small houses.

(7) Leave theGR®651here, turn left and follow the Chemin des Anglais or Chemins des Falaises, which is also known as the Chemin des Fontaines! At a crossroads, turn left towards the fountain.
After the fountains, walk along the edge of the cliff above the Célé valley. Reach the crossroads leading to the old television relay station.

(8) Open the gate and go to the right to reach the relay station, where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the valley (see the section: Nearby).
Turn around, go through the gate again, and take the path that climbs to the right (south-west) after the gate to reach Gabat.

(9) Turn right and join the D38.

(10) Follow it to the right for about 100 metres and rejoin theGR®651. Descend slightly to the right until you reach a new track. Turn left onto it, leaving theGR®, and you will come to another crossroads in a left-hand bend.

(11) Take the track on the right and continue almost straight ahead, heading north-east. Climb, leaving the peaks of Pech des Mayrignacs (390 m) and Ligoussou (442 m) on your right. You will reach a crossroads offering a beautiful view at an altitude of 377 m (see the section: Nearby).

(12) Here you have two options:
- either turn left for a quick return to Grèzes (see the section: Practical information),
- or continue straight ahead to join the D13 (option shown on the map). Turn right and follow the road for about 50 metres until you reach a crossroads in the bend.

(13) Take the path at the sharp angle to the left. You will arrive at the old Coursan sheepfold, where a reconstruction project was never completed. The place can be used as a shelter. Further on, you will reach a fork.

(14) Turn completely left and go straight ahead at the next crossroads. Cross the hamlet of Mas de Tourel to reach the Menhir de Bélinac crossroads.

(15) Turn right. At a fork, turn right again and discover the menhir (see the section: Nearby).

(16) Return to the previous crossroads.

(15) Turn right and continue almost straight ahead to reach Janduret.

(17) Turn left, join a track and continue straight ahead until you reach the road. Turn right onto the road and, after 100 metres, take the first path on the right. When you reach a road, turn right, then left at the calvary 30 metres further on. Pass in front of the water tower, then at the cemetery, turn left towards the church (see the section: Nearby). Go down in front of the church to reach the 19th-century market hall.

(18) Turn back towards the church, go straight up and then turn right (beautiful properties on the right and left). Ignore a small road on the left and, at the next junction, turn left.

(19) At the Sermenties intersection, turn right. There is a pretty garden with trimmed box trees on the right. The small road becomes a path; continue straight ahead, ignoring the paths that come from the right or left. You will reach the access road to a large quarry.

(20) Turn right, continue along the track and follow the quarry. You will come to a T-junction.

(21) Turn left, then right at the next crossroads. You will then reach the D38. Turn left, then right towards the church. Continue to the castle (see the section: Nearby) then return to the D38. Turn right, cross the D13 in front of the war memorial to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

Grèzes: water fountain and toilets at the start.
Livernon: café, restaurant, food shop.

(12) You can turn left and return directly to the starting point if you start to feel tired. The walk would then be 15 km. It is also possible to use this same shortcut to do only the northern part of the route: approximately 12.5 km, all flat!

Worth a visit

(S) The lake: a body of water where people used to do their laundry and water their sheep.

Near (8): viewpoint over the Célé valley:
- at our feet on the left bank: Espagnac (municipality of Espagnac Sainte-Eulalie). Priory: convent run by nuns until 1791. Half-timbered bell tower, part of the cloister and 15th-century church, inside 3 tombs,
- further downstream, the hamlet of Merlet,
- upstream and on the right bank, the hamlets of Pailhes, Diège, Vieilles Vignes and, on the horizon, Sainte-Eulalie.

::12: Panorama: Grèzes can be seen and, further away in the same direction, the village of Espédaillac. Further to the right, in green, is part of a building in the Livernon business park, the village itself being hidden by the hills.

(16) Bélinac menhir: one of the rarest and tallest (3.5 m) in the department. It dates from the late Neolithic period and is thought to be between 4,000 and 5,000 years old. Information panel on site. https://www.lieux-insolites.fr/lot/belin...

(18) Livernon: a heavily remodelled church that retains an apse and, above all, a tall Romanesque bell tower. Information panel near the door. A little further down the village, the 19th-century market hall.

(21) Grèzes: church with a Romanesque apse. The castle with its 17th-century façade, once a holiday camp, is now a boutique hotel and restaurant and exhibition venue.

A very beautiful and pleasant hike. Easy to follow despite a few minor inaccuracies due to the lack of signposting.

A very beautiful hike under the February sun. Not using a GPS, I was wise to take the IGN map with me, as some points lack precision, which led to two minor errors.
Thank you for this wonderful day, which we enjoyed thanks to you.

A truly beautiful hike for those who are prepared to walk 20 km.
With a smartphone, there's no problem finding your way.
We did it on a Wednesday and the quarry was closed, so there was no dust.
In hot weather, bring 2 litres of drink per person.
I highly recommend it.

Overall, it was good. Very beautiful shaded paths. We had a picnic at point 16, in the last bend before reaching the menhir, at the entrance to a shaded field. It is very hot at the moment: 30 degrees. In fact, in this last section, before arriving at Grèze, we walk along the right-hand side of an active quarry. We did this route on a Saturday, no problem. During the week, you risk getting dust in your face. Our shoes are proof of that. They came out white. For motorhomes, it's possible to spend the night without any problems in the car park at the starting point. A superb stop under the lime trees. Thanks to our scout.

A very beautiful hike on the Causse du Quercy plateau with lovely traditional farmhouses typical of the region. A magnificent day.
The only slight downside is that there could be a few more landmarks, such as limestone outcrops, the names of the hamlets we passed through, water sources, etc.
