On the Marc Robert ridge road and the Piste des Cinq Sedes trail

This route can be challenging at times, especially after rain, but the landscapes it passes through are truly breathtaking. Starting in the Plaine des Maures, you cross a forest of umbrella pines, Douglas firs, holm oaks and cork oaks. The terrain varies greatly, from sand and pebbles to stones and tarmac, allowing you to catch your breath as you go. The highlights are the Route des Crêtes Marc Robert, which reveals Lac des Escarcets, a silvery lake in the middle of the green plain, and the descent of the Cinq Sedes, winding down to the village of Les Mayons with its many viewpoints. An unforgettable route!

Description of the route

Departure from the athletics stadium, Avenue du Clos, at the Lotissement le Clos housing estate in Vidauban.

(S/E) Leave the stadium behind you to exit the housing estate. At the crossroads, take the Route de Saint-Tropez, pass under the motorway bridge and you will soon come to a fork.

(1) Turn left onto Chemin de la Rourède and follow it to the end. It turns into a stony path and then a track that may be rutted and covered with water if it has rained recently. You will arrive near the road (Chemin du Rouquas Troucas).

(2) Do not go down the paved road on the left, but take the dirt and gravel track that climbs to the right. After the climb, it turns into a grassy and then stony path. Continue to the T-junction.

(3) In front of the house, turn right, then follow the track which continues, turning 90° to the right and then to the left, arriving at a three-way junction. Turn right onto the wide white track which leads to the Route du Plan de la Tour (D72).

(4) Turn left and pass over the small bridge marked with blue and white signs until you reach the bridge over the Aille.

(5) Take this road and continue to the next left turn.

(6) Take the Piste de Bérard on the right, which is stony and descends.

(7) Cross the ford and continue south on the Piste des Fenouils, a dirt track with stones and roots. Before the hamlet, you will come to the Fenouils crossroads at the corner of a vineyard.

(8) Turn left onto the dirt track lined with broom and isolated pine trees and continue to the next fork with a firefighting tank.

(9) Turn 90° right before the latter and continue on the Piste de la Nible, where the vegetation becomes denser and the dusty ground turns into small stones. Head south until you come to a road (D74, Route du Plan de la Tour).

(10) Keep right and continue to the next intersection at Bastide Christol.

(11) Turn left onto Chemin des Plaines, then continue along the dirt track, marked by several water channels, including one just after a bend. You will arrive at a stony area on the left.

(12) Turn left onto the rutted, stony track with ruts, large holes and large stones.

(13) At the crossroads, continue left onto the Piste des Maximins, which is dirt and much flatter than the first few kilometres, but becomes stony and is crossed by streams with concrete slabs over the water in several places. Pass a drinking water reservoir and follow the Ruisseau des Mourgues for about 100 metres, which can be impetuous if it has rained recently.

(14) Cross the bridge and keep right at the following junctions until you head south-southwest. At the multiple junctions, descend to the left towards the road (D558).

(15) Watch out for cars on both sides and cross to rejoin the track opposite, which continues towards La Garde Freinet. It is a dirt track with stones, more or less rutted, and may be busy outside school hours. Reach the bridge over the Ruisseau des Neuf Riaux in a bend.

(16) Turn right and, via Rue des Teilles, reach a stop sign before the Route Nationale (D558).

(17) Leave the museum on your right and head towards the town centre, then continue along Boulevard de l'Esplanade until you reach a roundabout.

(18) Turn right onto Chemin du Débat, then right onto Route des Crêtes, and climb up to the car park on the ridge.

(19) Enjoy the view and take a short break! Continue on the paved road called Route des Crêtes Marc Robert until you reach a three-way junction with a buried DFCI reserve.

(20) Keep left and follow this road until you reach a fork just before the Col de la Court.

(21) Turn right onto the Piste des Cinq Sedes and continue down this very long descent, which can be rutted, especially in the bends. Don't get carried away by the speed as some of the bends are hairpin bends and prone to skidding. Descend to the car park with the barrier.

(22) Continue on the road to the right (Route des Mayons, D75), drive alongside the vineyards on your left and, at the end of these, turn left onto the Piste de la Tire, heading north, and follow it to the end.

(23) At the road (D558), turn left, cross the bridge over the Aille and reach the top of the hill after a slight left turn. Note the start of a dirt track on the right.

(24) Take this track, keep right at the three-way junction that follows, and continue north until you reach a vineyard.

(25) Go around it by turning right then left, and reach the ford of the stream. Cross it and follow the Riau Tort on your left for about a hundred metres. Ignore the farmhouse on your right and cut across the grassy area on the marked path to reach a field. Follow it on your right on a farm track which may be protected by a wild boar fence. Join a track at the edge of the forest.

(26) Continue left on the farm track and find the start of a forest track. Climb right up this track, which is blocked in places by large roots. You may need to push your bike. Head north, leave the woods and reach the road on the other side of the vineyards. Finally, reach Chemin de Bagarry at the edge of the military grounds.

(27) Turn right (Chemin de Bagarry) and follow it to a T-junction after a 90° left turn.

(28) Turn right, then left at the next junction (Chemin de la Galante) towards the Pied de Banc equestrian centre. Pass the centre and continue straight ahead on the tarmac roads, the last of which is Chemin de Pied Blanc.

(29) This leads to the motorway. Follow it on the right and rejoin the route you took on the way there.

(1) Turn left and, taking the opposite route to the one you took on the way there, return to the athletics stadium, Avenue du Clos (S/E).
