Spiez - Kiental

This first stage will take you from Spiez to the shores of Lake Thun and the small valley of Kiental.
After following the lake to Faulensee, the climb to Aeschi offers views of the pyramid-shaped Niesen mountain overlooking Spiez. You will also be impressed by the steep funicular railway that climbs up to the Niesen. You will enjoy the tranquillity of the village of Kiental.

Description of the walk

For ease of description, the following symbols are used:
Sign R: Yellow sign with hiker pictogram.
Sign No. 38 or P38: Red/white multi-directional sign with green sticker No. 38.
Sign No. 26 or P26: Red/white multi-directional sign with green sticker No. 26.
We recommend travelling to Spiez by train (see Practical Information section).
The start of this hike is at the Hotel Seegarten Marina in Spiez.

Signposting P38/P26

(S) From the hotel, go to the terrace by the harbour and walk around the marina to the beach (Bad).

(1) Stay along the lake on Strandweg. Look for sign No. 38/26 to confirm you are going in the right direction. Pass the cantonal fish farm buildings and public toilets before turning towards Faulensee Bay (elevation 559 and sign No. 38/26).

(2) Continue the beautiful walk along the lake to the pier for cruise lines on Lake Thun.

(3) Continue along Faulensee Bay, passing the Strandhotel Seeblick, until you reach the road to Interlaken. Keep left along Interlakenstrasse for about 50 metres.

Signpost P38 only

(4) Cross the road to Interlaken opposite Dorfgässli and join Almendweg (P38).

(5) Turn left onto Allmendweg, continue until you reach a railway underpass, and look for a staircase on the left just after the underpass.

(6) Go up the stairs, follow the railway line for about 100 metres, turn right to pass under the A8 motorway and come out onto Schüpfgasse.

(7) Turn right onto Schüpfgasse and follow the hairpin bend to the left towards the hamlet of Allmend. Continue until you cross Krattigstrasse.

(8) Cross Krattigstrasse and take the path directly opposite. Cross two forest tracks (each marked with a P38 sign). Walk through the Bois du Lac (Seeholz) and you will find another P38 sign at the exit of the woods at Chalchmattli.

(9) Head towards the village of Aeschi Bei Spiez, following the various P36 signs. You will find yourself at the southern exit of Aeschi.

(10) At the fork, turn left onto Suldhaltenstrasse and head south until you reach a crossroads (last P38 sign)

Signposting Faltschen signs

(11) Leave path No. 38 and take the small road heading south until you reach a fork.

(12) Stay on Suldhaltenstrasse on the right, heading east until you reach another Faltschen sign.

(13) Turn right and begin the descent towards the Suld torrent, cross it and climb back up to the hamlet of Faltschen.

Signposting Kiental signs

(14) Turn left and follow the various multi-directional signs for Kiental to reach the place called Hubel.

(15) Continuing south, keep climbing until you reach a crossroads after a sharp right-hand bend.

(16) Take the road towards Kiental on the left and follow the signs for Kiental to reach Hanselen (altitude 986).

(17) Follow the small road until you reach a hairpin bend and you will see another sign for Kiental.

(18) Continue right on Allmistrasse until you reach a small road at Chnächstguet.

(19) Descend to the right towards Kiental via Rufenenstrasse until you reach a bend, and at the end of a sharp bend to the right, you will see a sign indicating a path that cuts across the bends.

(20) Turn left, the path rejoins Rufenenstrasse, follow it downhill directly to Kiental.

(21) Follow Trogstutzweg to the left to enter the village of Kiental. Continue to the Hotel Bären, where you can spend the night (E).

Transport
It is best to travel to Spiez by train. Example: from Geneva to Spiez, the journey takes around 2½ hours with a change in Bern
