Kiental - Kandersteg

This second stage will take you from Kiental to Kandersteg. After a fairly challenging climb to Ramslauenen, you will cross the beautiful Horewald forest and then overlook the Kander valley. You will enjoy more views of Lake Thun and the Niesen. You will also have a bird's eye view of the trains on the Lötschberg line. Kandersteg is the station where vehicles board the shuttle trains before the Lötschberg railway tunnel.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Spiez - Leukerbad (Rinderhütte) via the Lötschenpass

Description of the walk

For ease of description, the following annotations are used:
R sign: Yellow sign with a hiker pictogram.
Sign No. 56 or P56: Red/white multi-directional sign with green sticker No. 56.
The start of this hike is at the Hotel Bären in Kiental.

Signpost No. 56

(S) From the hotel, head south-east to the village exit, taking Griesalpstrasse until you reach sign No. 56.

(1) Turn right towards the Chiene torrent and cross it. Look for another sign No. 56 after the bend at the intersection.

(2) Turn right again to reach the start of a path marked by a sign No. 56.

(3) Begin the long climb through the pastures to reach the Ramslauenen chairlift station (P56).

(4) After describing a semi-circle, you will reach a fork (P56).

(5) Take the right-hand path, following the various signs marked No. 56, walk through the forest and join a small road serving a few chalets at an altitude of 1555 metres. Continue to the last chalet, where a path marked by a sign No. 56 begins.

(6) Continue along this balcony path which goes around the small summit of Furggi and leads to a small road (P56).

(7) Cross the road and continue straight ahead, heading south. Follow the various signs marked No. 56 at the foot of the Giesgrat and begin to descend towards the hamlet of Schlafegg.

(8) As indicated by a hiking sign, turn right and continue south until you reach a crossroads with a sign No. 56.

(9) Stay on the path that branches off to the left and climb slightly towards two streams. Begin to descend into the valley and join a small road at an altitude of 1,273 metres. Follow it until you reach a hairpin bend.

(10) At sign No. 56, leave the road and continue south on a forest path until you reach another sign No. 56.

(11) Turn right and, still in the forest, descend gradually until you overlook the Lötschberg railway line. After crossing a stream, you will come to another intersection and signpost No. 56.

(12) Follow the wide track that descends slightly. Cross the Stägebach stream and, about 350 m further on , look out for the start of a path on the left. (Only a sign for R, unfortunately no sign No. 56, which would have been welcome).

(13) Leave the track and take the small path on the left that climbs back up into the forest. You will soon come to a reassuring signpost No. 56.

(14) Head south, continuing through the Mitholzalmi woods until you reach a fork (P56).

(15) Turn right and descend until you overlook the Kandersteig road. You will arrive at the access road to the village of Kandersteig. Follow the footpath until you reach sign No. 56.

(16) Cross the road and take the path leading to the Kander river. Cross the Kander and follow the river on its left bank, heading south. Shortly before the station, turn left onto Risetistrasse. Cross the Kander again, then turn right onto Aeussere Dorfstrasse. Return to the Hotel Adler, where you will be staying for the night (E).
