Source of the Doubs and frog pond

A short, very easy walk with a nice mix of mountain forest, peat bog and the banks of the Doubs.
Flat, easy to access, done with a pregnant woman and a 2.5-year-old child...

Description of the walk

Departure: Chalet de la Source car park in Mouthe.

(S/E) From the Chalet de la Source, head south-west.

(1) Before the bridge, turn left and head up to the source of the Doubs.

(2) Turn left to rejoin the starting road. Turn left, go downhill and cross the bridge. Enter the peat bog area where you will find information panels. Continue, keeping the forest on your left, until you reach a tarmac road.

(3) Turn right, then 150 metres further on, turn right again onto a path towards a place called Le Moutat.

(4) At the next three-way junction (small farmhouse in the middle of the three-way junction), turn right, then 200 metres further on you will come to a pond in the middle of the peat bog, with ducks, frogs, etc.
Retrace your steps, turn right and cross the Doubs river to reach Mouthe. From the bridge on the downstream side, you can see a pretty little castle.
Continue towards the church, then turn right at the crossroads and continue for about 250 metres.

(5) Turn right onto the track that takes you back to the banks of the Doubs via theGR®5(red and white markings).

(1) At the road, turn left to return to the Chalet de la Source (S/E).

A very pleasant route for exploring the source of the Doubs, which is fairly short and presents no difficulty.

An interesting route, ideal for young children but in full sun. However, following work to divert the river, there is no longer a frog pond, so the main attraction of the walk for children is no longer there.
Fortunately, there is a small waterfall.

A very pleasant family walk with a few points of interest along the route: a pretty village, a peat bog, the ruins of an old mill, and a spring. There's a nice spot for a picnic near the spring.
We did the route in the opposite direction. The pond is still there and there is no housing development ;-) Two ducks flew away when I approached and there were no frogs (perhaps eggs) as it was probably too early in the season. After the pond, we continued straight ahead and then turned left without going through point 3.

The information needs to be updated – the pond no longer exists, unfortunately replaced by new housing. The bog is still worth seeing, though.

The route around the spring is very good, but we didn't see the frog pond. The walk through the village is very nice.

We couldn't find the entrance to the "frog pond", but does it even exist in this year of drought?
The source of the Doubs obviously had a fairly low flow.
As already mentioned, the route lacks shade, so don't forget your sun cream!

A pleasant, easy walk, 90% of which is in the open (we did it under the hot sun in Mouthe... yes, really!). The source of the Doubs is a very pleasant spot, with some beautiful photo opportunities. Typical Haut Doubs landscapes and peat bogs for the rest of the route. The frog pond is a little difficult to find at this time of year as it is almost dry. To see it, you have to enter the pasture, follow the path for about 100 metres, and then leave it on the left to walk through the grass for about 80 metres (you can't see the pond from the path). We had a very pleasant time on this route. Thank you.
