Access to the starting point: at the central crossroads in Soulz-les-Bains (with traffic lights), take Rue Saint-Maurice and pass the church. At the first crossroads, keep right until you reach Rue du Fort, then take the first right, Rue des Casemates, which is quite steep. You will arrive near the Coudriers residence, where you can park.
(S/E) The trail starts behind this group of three residential buildings. Follow Rue des Casemates.
(1) Look for the first sign for "Sentier des Casemates". From there, you will arrive at a ridge with a view of Soulz-les-Bains on one side and the Vosges mountains on your left and the Scharrachberg on your right. Continue straight ahead until you reach the reservoir.
(2) "Observatoire point 3". A sign indicates the military significance of this position, which offers a 180° panoramic view. As part of the centenary of theFirst World War, at this location, on a promontory, you will see a presentation of photos and texts on the edges, detailing the history of the military installation and the lives of the soldiers.
After following the ridge, continue straight ahead until you reach a concrete path, turn left and go uphill.
(3) At the top of this hill, you will see a casemate on your right. Go around it on the right and you will see some entrances below, accessible via a fairly steep path. One of the entrances leads to a corridor that gives a glimpse of the layout of the rooms and the imposing concrete structure. Then follow the ridge path. You will be walking alongside military grounds on your right. Just at the edge of the woods, turn left at a 90° angle and follow a fairly steep path that winds downhill and ends at a wide path. Turn right.
(4) The path leads to the restricted entrance to Fort Mutzig. Turn left and take the stairs with a well-marked path below.
(5) A sign indicates the location of the former Russian and Italian military cemetery dating from the Second World War. Continue along the path until you reach a paved road at the Kaltenbrunne fountain.
(6) Follow the red disc signs for the Club Vosgien on your left, climbing the slope in front of you through a large meadow and continuing through the woods for over 500 metres. You will come to a crossroads. Take the path on your left, which will take you down into the valley to a wayside cross. Just after this cross, take the path on your right which leads to the Holzbrunnen fountains.
(7) Continue straight ahead towards Soulz-les-Bains. You will return to Rue du Fort and your parking spot (S/E).
