The summits of Marsaou and Les Suvières

Starting from the DN7 near Saint-Jean-de-Cannes, this lovely circular route in the Estérel will take you to the summits of Marsaou and Les Suvières for a stunning panorama of the entire massif and the coastline from Cap d’Antibes to Cap de Saint-Tropez.

All along the route, you’ll discover the characteristic vegetation of the Estérel: mimosas, cork oaks, stone pines and eucalyptus… with a few lovely shady spots full of ferns!

Description of the walk

Park in a lay-by at the side of the road below the private housing estate of Saint-Jean-de-Cannes (space for 4 or 5 cars).

(S/E) Head down the track below the road and you’ll soon reach the bottom of the Vallon de Saint-Jean.

(1) Once at the bottom, turn right and head up the valley along a damp path beneath the mimosa trees. Continue along the left bank until you reach a wider spot by the stream at Lac de la Charbonnière (a lake that did not exist in May 2020).

(2) Cross the stream and head up the path opposite. Ignore a track leading up to the left and continue along the main path (track) until you reach a junction with a path leading up from the right.

(3) Head up to the left and you’ll soon reach a wide track at a bend.

(4) Follow the track to the left, climbing in a straight line.

(5) Ignore a small path leading down to the left and stay on the main track.
After a right-hand bend, you’ll reach a Y-junction.

(6) Take the track branching off to the right, right next to a wetland area beneath the eucalyptus trees.

(7) At the end of this track, turn left onto a well-marked path that climbs straight up through the scrub. The path then levels out and takes a sharp right-hand bend before heading south-west and joining a balcony path near the Pas de la Cèpe.

(8) Turn right onto this path and enjoy your first view of the coast and the Lérins Islands.
Follow this path to the foot of the Clavette rocks.
After a hairpin bend to the left, the path gives way to a narrow passage through the rocks where you may need to use your hands. But it’s nothing too difficult.
Then head back down the other side and follow a balcony path leading to Baisse Violette.

(9) At Baisse Violette, take the path on the left that climbs above the cistern, then after a few dozen metres, look out for a cairn marking the path that climbs to the left towards Baisse des Pourraques.
The climb is easy and you reach this pretty, shaded pass after winding your way through a scree slope.

(10) From Baisse des Pourraques, take the very steep path on the left leading to the summit of Marsaou. The summit is a vast grassy area with a view somewhat spoiled by the pine trees.

(11) Turn back to the previous pass at Baisse des Pourraques.

(10) Take the path opposite, on the other side, to climb up to Les Suvières. The distance is longer but the slope is much gentler. A few easy climbing steps are required to reach the summit rocks, from where you’ll enjoy a superb panorama over the entire Estérel massif and the coast from Cap d’Antibes to the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, and on a clear day, the Mercantour in the distance.

(12) Then head back down to the previous pass, the Baisse des Pourraques.

(10) Head down to the right along a track that joins the Ravin des Fabrigouliers. Keep to the left to reach a small road at the Maison Forestière des Trois Termes.

(13) Walk past the house and follow the road to the Col des Trois Termes.

(14) At the pass, turn left onto a track, then at a three-way junction, continue along the main track which descends slightly to the right. Follow this track to the wetland you passed on the way up.

(6) Continue to the right on the track taken at the start of the hike and, after the left-hand bend, look out for a path that heads into the forest on the right.

(5) Turn right onto this path, then head down to the left into a fairly dense forest.
You will then arrive at a clearing near a hunting post. Ignore the path leading off to the right and head down a faint path slightly to the left. Pass a spring (a slightly muddy spot) and rejoin the path on the other side. Continue along this path until you reach the path you took at the start of the hike, just above the “Lac” de la Charbonnière.

(2) Turn right, cross the Vallon de Saint-Jean and follow the route you took on the way out to return to the starting point (S/E).

An easy hike, apart from two sections where you may need to use your hands.

Avoid in hot weather; bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person.

Worth a visit

This hike offers some lovely views and a magnificent 360° panorama at the summit of Les Suvières.

Hello Cigalevsa,

Thank you for this information, but I cannot find any regulations on the town hall’s website or on the ONF’s website regarding a ban on hiking.

The decrees establishing and governing this managed nature reserve do not mention any ban!

I think Visorando will get in touch with the ONF to find out more...

We went on this hike on 17 February 2024. The nature reserve is off-limits; ‘No public access’ signs have been put up at the main entrances, some of which have been vandalised. This ban dates back to 2021 but is ignored by the vast majority of hikers; for years, forest rangers have been carrying out preventive measures, and recently a fine of €65 was introduced. Due to its ineffectiveness, this has been increased to €135 and patrols have been put in place. We made a detour to the forest ranger’s station to obtain information about this ban; it is in force and is intended to protect endemic species. The fine issued by the police or rural wardens is €135 per person. You can obtain further information from the Var Tourist Office. Please pass on this information.

Hello Ounégast,

The start of the hike is much further down towards Mandelieu, on the right as you leave Saint-Jean-de-Cannes.

To reach Les Suvières, you do indeed have to make your way over the rocks towards the end, and this is clearly indicated in the description.

I agree with you about the view from the summit, which isn’t the most spectacular in the range, but it’s still a beautiful, unobstructed 360° panorama; it’s the second-highest peak in the Estérel and is situated in the centre of the range.

Best regards.

Good evening, Viniavelo,

Have you been given any further details about this ban?

I can’t find any regulations prohibiting hiking.

It is indeed a nature reserve, but it’s more a matter of forest management. It’s not a ban on all human activity.

Thank you in advance.

Unfortunately, this route is off-limits; we were a small group that day, marvelling at the beauty of the landscape in glorious weather. On arriving at the ‘Maison forestière des 3 termes’, we were met by a forest ranger who kindly informed us that this biodiversity conservation area was off-limits.
The fine is €63 per person; we had a narrow escape that day – he was just carrying out a warning. Please be warned: proceed at your own risk...

A lovely route. The forest is magnificent: tall trees, a wide variety of species... The scenery is varied and the views are stunning, particularly from the summit of Les Suvières.
Between point 1 and point 2, the path is muddy but proved passable despite the recent rain...
A must-do!

A lovely, pleasant walk in an area we hadn't visited before.
A magnificent spot at the top of Les Suvières.

We got a bit stuck at point 2 and nearly lost our way. In the end, the path to follow is directly opposite where you arrive; you have to cross the riverbed (which is completely dry) at a right angle, and climb up the narrow path lined with tall brambles.

We had a lot of horseflies at the start, between points 1 and 2, but they left us alone after that.

1.5 litres of water per person was the minimum on this rather hot day, although the walk is mainly in the shade.

On the way back, to make sure you don’t miss the turn at point 5, just look for the numbers on the trees (if they haven’t changed...). The turn is around number 11.

We had a lovely walk today. We had a slight problem reading the route at point 2, but we managed to get back on track afterwards. There was plenty of shade in the morning and it was a lovely walk up to point 10. Then, from point 10 to point 11 (the summit of Marsaou), there was a steep slope, but it wasn’t too long. It was nicer on the Suvières side, where we stopped for a bite to eat. The return journey was easier.
