Orschwihr Wine Trail

The wine-growing village of Orschwihr is situated in a small valley between the Florival and the Vallée Noble. It is separated from the plain by the Bollenberg, a hill with a Mediterranean climate, where numerous animal and plant species thrive (praying mantises, hoopoes, orchids...).

Description of the walk

Park in the Rue du Bollenberg car park.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, follow the signpost next to the information board and take the steep climb to the left of a cross, along a path leading to the top of Bollenberg hill. The path then continues to the left, towards the summit.

(1): When you reach a junction with a tarmac road, enjoy the view of the Pfingstberg. A little further on, heading towards Bergholtz (south), you will see the Chapel of the Holy Cross at the top of the hill. Continue to the right, then immediately left onto the rutted dirt and grass track. Keep to the left. Further on, you will see a signpost, then a second one. The path seems to disappear into the vegetation. Don’t be misled; the route continues to the left. A little further on, you’ll reach the Obereluftweg (Fresh Air Path). Enjoy the view over the Orschwihr valley. Continue along the path, taking in the view of the Vallée Noble, until you reach the next junction.

(2) Turn left to head down the road. During the descent, you can see the Vallée Noble and the Zinnkoepflé on your right. Pass two junctions and cross the Wine Route (Route de Soultzmatt) to climb back up towards the Pfingstberg. At the first junction, turn right, then left, following the signs to start a steep climb. Once at the top, turn left. You can admire the Vallée Noble on your left, Orschwihr and the Unterlinden massif. Continue by turning right to start another concrete climb.

(3) At the top of this climb, turn left. Shortly afterwards, on your right, you will find an information panel. Then head down a gentle tarmac descent. Here you will find the final information panel on the wine trail. When you reach a T-junction, turn right and continue along the side of the road for 5 minutes to reach Orschwihr. Before reaching the main road, you will see the Saint-Wolfgang Chapel on your right.

(4) Continue along the main road, passing the town hall, until you reach the Grand’Rue at the Cave Materne Haegelin. Walk down this street to reach Rue du Bollenberg and, finally, the finish line (S/E).

I suggest two changes:

  • a few hundred metres after the start, it would be better to route the walk through La Chapelle... currently the route bypasses La Chapelle a few metres below. It’s a shame... it adds a point of interest.
  • At the end of the route, it would be better to have the route pass between the church and the castle... this also adds interest

Neither of these changes would make the walk any longer

A lovely walk through the vineyards, with beautiful scenery – best avoided on very hot days as the route isn’t shaded.
