Franco-German trail from castle to castle - Part 1

The "Premiungweg" marked trail is a meeting point between Alsace and the Palatinate. Between the Northern Vosges and the Wasgau: two of the most beautiful natural sites in Europe thanks to their landscapes of endless forests, pink sandstone rocks rising towards the sky and remarkable castle ruins. This 33 km trail was originally divided into two circular sections. Here is thefirst 20 km section.

Description of the walk

Car park in Schönau (Pfalz) Gebüger Straße.

(S/E) Leave the car park and turn right towards the east. Pass the fire station on your left and head towards the main junction of the L488 and Gebüger Straße. Cross and continue straight ahead.

Signposting: Black Castle Tour on White Background

Walk up Wegelnburger Straße. A road will come up on your right, continue straight ahead. At the crossroads, take the road opposite, Am Köpfel. The road turns sharply to the left and then to the right. At the fork, go right. Walk past one last house, the road becomes a dirt track as it enters the forest.

(1) Look for the path on your right and climb up. The path winds its way up to a wider forest track. Continue straight ahead. Climb further eastwards. At the next forest track, turn right for a few steps.

(2) Take the hairpin path on your left and then on your right. Continue climbing until you reach the next forest path and turn right. Further on, take the path on your left and continue climbing. At the next forest path, turn right again.

(3) Then follow the path on your left, which winds a little before reaching the border with the Brauntal nature reserve, marked by a boundary stone. Walk along the Schusselfels, a mass of pink sandstone. Turn right at the next boundary stone and, at thethird boundary stone, a little further on, take the path downhill on your right. The path turns left and leads to a forest track, which you take to the right. At the bend, take the path on your left and you will come to a forest hut further down.

(4) With your back to the hut, go straight ahead and take the left fork.

(5) At the next fork, turn right.

Follow the markings and directions carefully, as the path takes more detours than shown on the map until you reach (6)

At the crossroads, continue straight ahead. The path turns right and climbs. At the forest road, turn left.

(6) At the fork, keep to your left. A little further on, a path returns to your left; continue straight ahead for about 500 metres.

(7) Before the bend, take the path on your left. Walk along the Langerfels, a pink sandstone barrier with a balcony path. Climb a few steps and you will come to the forest path, which you take to the right.

(8) At the crossroads, turn left and keep left until you reach the signpost. Take the path to the left of the signpost. At the forest path, turn right and then immediately left onto the path going uphill. You will arrive at Wegelnburg Castle.

After visiting the castle ruins, continue along the wide forest path downhill, passing various rocks called Krotenstuhl and Kaiser Wilhlem Turm, and head towards the hut. Continue straight ahead, cross the border, and you are now in France.

(9) At the wide forest path, continue straight ahead to the Maidenbrunnen spring. Take the path uphill to the right of the spring. At the ruins of Honenbourg Castle, continue towards the ruins of Loewenstein Castle. At the information boards for the castle, turn right and descend. At the path, turn right and take the trail on your left, continue downhill to the crossroads, then turn left and finally go straight ahead. Pass the Hohenbourg Pass.

(10) At the fork, take the rocky path (if it is raining or if you have young children, take the easier path on the right; they meet at the bottom of the descent), descend along the Langenfels climbing rocks.

(11) At the bottom, you will find the Flekenstein Castle car park (the only one where you have to pay to visit). Go around the building to the left and cross the courtyard with the ticket office on your right. Walk along the picnic area and keep to the left when the path splits to visit the castle itself. Go downhill and continue straight ahead at the multiple crossroads. Continue along a narrow path. It turns sharply to the left and leads to a wide forest path.

(12) At the bottom, turn right. Follow the path until you reach the road. Cross carefully and go over the bridge over the Sauer. Take the path (GR®®531) on the left along the river. Keep left at the fork. Keep left again at the next fork.

(13) At the farm, turn right between the buildings, pass them and turn left at the first crossroads. After walking along the fence of the next house, turn right and then right again.

(14) At the fork, turn left at the sign for "Zone de silence de Steinbach" (Steinbach quiet zone). Follow this path for just under 1 km. Another path joins it on your right, but ignore it. Take the path on the right a few steps further on. Climb up to the last castle on the route, Froensbourg Castle.

Go around the castle on the left. At the multiple crossroads, ignore the black castle on a white background signposting for a short while, which suggests you go straight ahead, and climb up to the right to reach the entrance to Froensbourg Castle. After visiting the ruins of this castle, take the red rectangleGR®®5markings to the left of the information panel for a short while until you rejoin the original black castle on white background markings further on. You will then come to a wide path, which you should take to the left.

(15) Take the path on your right. You will come to another forest path, which you should follow to the left.

(16) At the bend, take the path on your left and join a forest track, which you follow to the right until you reach the Col de Hitchenbach. At the multiple crossroads with a shelter, take the path ascending to the left of it towards the north. Abandon the markings.

No markings

(17) At the top, turn right, cross the border and keep to the path in front of you. Follow a wide forest track for about 1 km.

(18) Keep left at the next two forks; a path joins you on your left, continue along it. The path turns sharply to the right and descends to a crossroads. Go straight ahead down the descending path, leave the forest and reach some houses. At the crossroads, turn right and leave the houses behind.

(19) At the high-voltage power lines, take the path on the left, descend to a road and continue on the left. At the main road, turn right and return to the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Castles:

Wegelnburg/D
Built at an altitude of 572 metres, this ruin, first mentioned in 1247, is the highest in the Palatinate. After a robber knight who attacked passers-by took refuge there, it was besieged in 1270 and illegitimately taken by the Fleckensteins. The castle changed hands frequently from 1330 onwards, before losing its military role and becoming a bailiff's residence in the 15th century. Plundered by Croatian soldiers in 1635 and burned down in 1644, it was finally destroyed by Montclar in 1680.

Maidenbrunnen spring on the French-German border

Hohenbourg/F
This semi-troglodyte castle, built in, above and around a rock at an altitude of 550 metres, dates from the 13th century. Attacked twice in the 15th century, the new owners built significant defensive structures. However, the castle was largely destroyed during a siege in 1523. It was rebuilt between 1571 and 1590 but was finally destroyed by Montclar's troops in 1680. The castle offers a magnificent view of the Palatinate to the north and the Steinbach valley to the south.

Loewenstein/F
Built at the end of the 12th century at an altitude of 530 m and 300 m from Hohenbourg, then ceded to the Ochsensteins, the castle became a hideout for robber knights before being besieged and destroyed by the troops of Lichtenberg and the Bishop of Strasbourg in 1386. It was not rebuilt. Today, few remains are left except for traces of a pentagonal keep and a dwelling on the north side, a cistern serving as access to the south side, a spiral staircase and a well.

Langenfels: climbing rocks

Fleckenstein/F
Built on a 20-metre-high sandstone promontory, 125 metres long and 8 to 15 metres wide at an altitude of 370 metres, the castle has existed since the 12th century to control the roads to Lorraine and Haguenau. After sieges in 1276 and 1315, it was restored in the 15th century, refurbished and modernised in the 16th century, but destroyed in 1680. The rock, cut vertically, was hollowed out to build rooms. On the upper platform, there are remains of the 15th-century palace and a chapel.

Fleikenstein Pond

Froensbourg/F
Built in the 13th century, destroyed by Lichtenberg's troops in 1359 and then completely restored in the 15th century by the lords of Fleckenstein, the semi-troglodytic castle is built on two 40-metre-high rocks. Today, you can see rooms carved into the rock, an old well-cistern, an old square cistern and the remains of a residential tower with a pointed arch doorway dating from 1481.

A magnificent hike that took just over 6½ hours (not including visits to the castles we already knew). We particularly enjoyed the little forest paths and the superb rocky outcrops, especially during the first part of the route and on the Roches trail.
Apart from the Fleckenstein area (castle and pond) and Wegelnburg Castle, the route was very quiet.

A pleasant, shaded walk. I did it on a hot day but didn't suffer from the heat.
It is enhanced by the castles. Be careful during the nesting season (the last one was not accessible).
Beautiful views.

One of the most beautiful we've ever done on a trail, and we've been doing them in Alsace thanks to Visorando for several years now. It was a sunny Sunday in early April, with no leaves yet on the trees, the light was exceptional and the views of the rocks and castles were breathtaking.
Above all, we enjoyed the variety of trails, with beautiful climbs, short technical descents along the rocky outcrops, and crossings over more rolling and pleasant singles... A real treat for a sporting and cultural walk. We'll be coming back more often to the northern Vosges, although it's the centre and south that are our favourite playgrounds. We were blown away by this lovely route.

This is a very nice walk that takes you through some beautiful castles, which may be in ruins but are nonetheless very beautiful. The only problem was the fog, which prevented us from getting a good view from the top of the castles.
The signposting was perfect for us

We did the second part in March this year. We already found it very rewarding and well signposted.
This one was just as rich in discoveries, with lots of beautiful, well-maintained ruins. Big climbs from start to finish. A few bugs in places, but otherwise nothing to complain about.
Despite everything, we preferred the second part.
Yesterday we went back, but on a motorbike, to visit Fleikeinstein Castle.

Superb tour with breathtaking castles. We expected to find ruins with just a few stones, but the ruins still contain the remains of a very impressive keep. Be careful as the start of the walk is quite difficult to find. There are lots of signs with different routes. Be sure to follow the black castle on a white background sign and don't go too fast or you'll miss a crossroads. we lost 1 hour by taking the wrong path. On the way, it was impossible to find your way if you didn't have a map, as the signs were inadequate. In March, we were alone on these paths. Fabulous!

A magnificent walk in this beautiful part of the Vosges du Nord.
We loved this walk: the scenery is really beautiful, the fortified castles are breathtaking, and the sandstone rocks along the way are impressive.
The description was perfect and, with the Visorando app, it was perfect. The signposting on site was very well done.
In short, it was a great day out!

The signposting was absent in places. Fortunately, the route on the map and the description were accurate.
Otherwise, a superb walk with a superb 360° view of the Hohenbourg ruin.

Hello bijou62,
Thank you for your feedback.
I couldn't see why you were talking about the yellow circle because I didn't mention it in my description.
But it helped me to see that I had forgotten to note the abandonment of the signposting at a strategic point in order to return to the car park. I'll rectify that as soon as possible. Thank you for your time.
The gypsy rock can be seen in the 2nd part of the Franco-German trail that I posted: https://www.visorando.com/randonnee-sent...
As far as the map is concerned, you must have cached it with Top IGN France to have the CV signposting, but in that case you don't have a base map for the part in Germany.

With pleasure
Best regards

Hello,
Very interesting walk, done in fine weather.
The signs are very well done, with the black tower logo on a white background.
It's a pity on the French side that the Club Vosgien logos are not also used, especially at the Col de Hitchenbach where you have to leave the black tower logo on a white background and take the yellow circle. We made several mistakes by continuing to follow the wrong sign and arrived at the Roche des Tsiganes, fortunately with the good weather it wasn't serious, but I don't understand why you don't use a real copy of the IGN map with the CV logos.
Thanks all the same for this idea for an outing, the castles are magnificent and the views from the platforms breathtaking.
