From Gimbelhof to the Castle and Fleckenstein Pond

Fleckenstein Castle is an eagle’s nest of extraordinary proportions, first mentioned in 1174. It had a reputation as an impregnable stronghold until it fell, without a fight, to the soldiers of Louis XIV in 1680. This walk invites you to discover this castle and the lake of the same name.

Description of the walk

Start from the Gimbelhof car park (Club Vosgien archway).

(S/E) Turn right towards the Sentier des Charbonniers.

(1) At the junction, take the Sentier des Charbonniers on the right for about 600 m.

(2) At the fork, turn right and continue along the path marked with a Red Rectangle crossed out in a White Rectangle. Walk past the P'tit Fleck shop and continue towards the castle.

(3) Leave the route to visit the castle. Then, return to the path marked with a Red Rectangle and turn right onto the path (GR®53) which descends towards the D925. Then keep left and then right.

(4) When you reach the D925, do not cross it; take the path on the left marked with a Blue Rectangle (GR®531).

(5) Turn right at the path marked with a Red Triangle which descends towards the D525.

(6) Cross it carefully and continue along the path marked with a Blue Rectangle, which runs alongside the D925 for about a hundred metres. Turn right at the junction and then, at the Étang du Fleckenstein, follow the road to the left.

(7) At the end of the lake, turn left and follow the Yellow Ring-marked trail for 3 km, which will take you back to the Gimbelhof car park. Todo this, keep to the right to climb up into the Dentelthal valley. Then keep left at the two junctions until the top of the climb, where you must turn right to reach the car park (S/E).
