Description of the walk

Follow the yellow signs.

(S/E) With your back to the Tourist Office, walk along the covered walkway on the left, then take Rue du Sellier opposite.

(1) At the end of the street, turn right onto Boulevard Dupuy, then take the first street on the left to stop at the Fréjaire fountain, built in the mid-17th century on the initiative of Guérin de Bouscal, the city's consul, playwright and renowned author.
Turn around, cross Boulevard Dupuy again and continue along Rue Jean Jaurès opposite.

(2) Once on Rue Jean Jaurès, turn left at the second street (Rue du Crossic) and then right onto Rue de la Bertuyé. Continue straight ahead on the narrow Rue Bertuyé and take the first right (Rue Badou) to Place Louisa Paulin, named after one of the most important Occitan authors of her generation.
Turn left and continue under the covered walkway behind the Church of Notre-Dame du Taur, a former Protestant temple that became a Catholic church.

At the end of the covered walkway, continue left along Rue Cabrouly and cross Boulevard Gambetta.

(3) Continue straight ahead on Rue Albert 1er. Turn right onto Chemin des Ramières towards Cantemerle. Pass Chemin de Malpel, Chemin de la Clotte and Chemin du Puech and continue for about 170 metres.

(4) Turn right and follow the path leading to Puech de Caylou. After a few twists and turns, the tarmac gives way to a dirt track that suddenly begins to climb towards the hillsides. A first landing offers a short break to admire the Dadou valley and the south of Réalmont. The path becomes wilder, running alongside an old vineyard and then a cultivated field, before rejoining the tarmac road. Continue to the right.

(5) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead. In the left-hand bend, turn right towards Puech.
You are now at the Caylou farm. Feel free to cross the courtyard, as you are allowed to pass through. Your reward is not far away: the spiral path leads to the summit.

(6) Discover the admirable panorama, the town of Réalmont and the Tarn in all directions. To return, follow the same route as on the way there.

(5) Turn left onto Route du Caylou towards Réalmont. Further on, turn right onto Chemin de la Janade. Leave the tarmac road and follow a path that joins Chemin de la Corniche. Turn right and, in front of the HLM buildings, take the stairs on the left. After the stairs, go down the street on the right, which will take you back to Rue Albert 1er.

(3) Take the reverse route of the outward journey on the left to return to the starting point (S/E).

A pleasant walk with beautiful views, mainly in the sun, but with a steep, paved climb that is short.

We combined this hike with the Tendes trail (short version).
There are three highlights to this walk at Puech du Caylou: the 360° view from the Puech cross, the sculptures we admired on the way back, and the view of Réalmont from the steps at the end of the trail.

It rained at times, but it was pleasant, part town, part countryside: perfect! We didn't climb the last few metres up the spiral staircase: I think the last two signs on the walk were slightly off course, but we understood from the walk description.

Personally, I did the route on market day (Wednesday). I parked and started the hike at a point between points 3 and 4 (there was no parking at the tourist office that day).
At point 4, the slope is steep for 300 or 400 metres. At the end of these few hundred metres, you may be greeted by two small (micro-sized) rockets that the owner of a house lets run free. But they are not very dangerous, just a little aggressive.
After that, the walk is very pleasant and fairly quiet, mostly on small tarmac roads and partly on very well-maintained paths. At the top of the Caylou farm, you will have a beautiful view.
Following the rest of the route, there must be a tree carving enthusiast living somewhere around here. You will find the carved trees on your left (there aren't many, so you'll have to look carefully to see them).
The descent to Réalmont is then gentle and ends at the market square. If, like me, you are hiking on a Wednesday, you can enjoy one of the most beautiful markets in the region. Remember to bring a bag for your purchases. To return to your car, if you parked like me, you will have less than 500 metres to walk.
