The Old Oak Route in Lombers

The trail starts in the village of Lombers. It begins by crossing the agricultural plateaus of Albi until it reaches the hamlet of Belsoleil, home to the private museum of Michel Lucien, the pigeon loft specialist. The route then continues along narrower paths through woodland before joining the Albi-Castres Greenway, which runs alongside the Ruisseau de l’Assou, which you will need to cross.

Description of the walk

Park in the main square in Lombers.

(S/E) Head towards the Town Hall, cross the old bridge (footbridge) then turn left towards Laboutarié.

(1) Turn right towards La Basselié. Carry straight on, ignoring the turn-offs on either side, until you reach a three-way junction.

(2) Ignore the small road leading to Cancel on the left and keep to the right. Head down towards the valley of a small stream and then climb back up towards Belsoleil.

(3) After the old buildings, turn left towards Sieurac (D96) and continue straight on for 2 km across a limestone plateau with white rock outcrops in places.

(4) Turn left towards Pérayrol and head uphill. At the top, leave the road and take a path on the right by the old oak tree. Head down towards the Assou valley.

(5) Join a small road and follow it to the left. Pass close to the farms of Maraval and Callepe, and Château Frèjefont, before reaching the D104.

(6) Turn left and continue for about 300 m.

(7) Turn right and cross the ford at a place called Versailles: this is private property, so please stay on the path.
Please note: the ford is impassable in winter. Continue along the D104, then turn right at Canet and pass through Les Plégats, before rejoining the path which you should follow to the left until you reach the village.

(8) Turn left twice to join the Albi-Castres Greenway, which leads back to the village. Pass the cemetery and continue for another hundred metres.

(9) Then turn left onto Avenue de la Gare to return to the starting point (S/E).

A pleasant hike with some beautiful views. However, there is a lot of tarmac.
The ford was impossible to cross as the stream had swollen considerably. Some very beautiful dovecotes.

Nothing but road as far as the eye can see – not to be attempted in the sun as there’s nowhere to get out of the way. The route is well signposted at the start with wooden signs, then marked with yellow markings at level 4; the path is hard to spot across the fields, on a private track??? And watch out for the beehives! Even just for the pleasure of walking, it’s boring to death ........
The local council should find some off-road paths and redo the final signposting

Nothing but tarmac! About 85% tarmac, and in the height of summer, it’s starting to get hot!
Since I started using Visorando, I reckon this so-called ‘hike’ is the most tarmac-heavy. It has to be said that many walks around Lombers are…
No point to it other than keeping your shoes clean.
And then there’s the ford – you have to be very careful if you don’t want to get your shoes wet; I had water up to my ankles.
Anyway, to sum up, I wouldn’t recommend it…

As the ford is difficult to cross unless you take your shoes off, at point 6, once you reach the D104, turn right; after 300 metres, turn left to cross the Escribe farm (there is a sign allowing walkers to pass through the farm); after the farm, turn left onto a small road that takes you back to the vicinity of the farm known as Versailles, where you rejoin the main route.

A well-signposted and pleasant route.
We couldn’t find the old oak tree where it was marked.
The ford was impassable, so we had to walk a bit further along the road.
We carried on along the secret path of the south-westerly wind; on another occasion we had combined this walk with the archaeologists’ circular route to make it longer.
These routes are well suited to winter or spring.

Nothing but tarmac... and very little to see
A stream crossing with no fording point.
Whoever mapped out this route must not like hikers.

The terrain is undulating, which is very pleasant. Much of the walk is on tarmac, with vehicles passing along certain sections, so do take care!

This walk isn't particularly interesting: there's a lot of road (albeit quiet) and the scenery is rather ordinary.
