Along the way, you will enjoy views of Mont Saint-Michel, the Vauban huts and the Lude Valley, passing through the valley of the painters, before heading back up into the countryside, passing through the marshes and the village of Kairon to arrive in the Beausoleil district of Saint-Pair.

Description of the walk

Parking at the viewpoint on the D911 Route des Falaises.

(S) Head south on the path towards the sea, which is all downhill. Further down, at the T-junction, turn right. Continue westwards and rejoin the tarmac Route de la Corniche.

(1) Take the first small road on the left, before the D911. Descend for 300 metres, then turn right and follow the winding road uphill to reach Chemin de la Cabane Vauban.

(2) Turn left (west) and follow the coastal path along the sea to reach the second Vauban hut.

(3) Turn right (north-east). Then take the first path on the right, after barely 200 metres, to reach a car park. After the car park, turn left onto a well-marked path with a sign and descend gently.

(4) Once on the path, turn left and continue straight ahead, crossing a stone bridge, then a series of plank bridges, following the Le Lude stream.

(5) Turn left towards Port du Lude.

(6) At the fork, take the path on the right which climbs uphill. Then continue straight ahead to reach the orientation table with a view of the 6km beach at Carolles/Jullouville.

(7) With your back to the sea, head left to find the Pignon Butor path. Continue along the path on the left and descend the winding stairs to reach Chemin des Pêcheurs, where you turn right.

(8) Cross the D911 (take care) to reach the Vallée des Peintres. At the end, take the path up to the right and then cross the stone bridge. At the top, turn left, cross the bridge and continue straight ahead.

(9) Go up the stone steps (GR®223). At the top, turn left, then slightly right onto the road, then left towards the viewpoint and the water tower.

(10) Continue straight ahead towards Route de Rainfray, then at the end of Chemin de la Chevrue, turn left onto Chemin des Carrouges. Cross Route Saint-Pair by first turning right then left.

(11) At the crossroads, turn left towards Le Thar. Follow the path, cross a wooden bridge, then turn right along the river. Follow the path to reach a Z-shaped log ramp and continue.

(12) Turn right onto Chemin du Surthar for 200 metres, then left towards Kairon church.

(13) Turn right for 100 metres, then continue on the left via the steps and finally straight on towards the D373. Follow this road for 100 metres.

(14) Turn left to reach the "Beausoleil" district of Saint-Pair.

A bit of tarmac on the road, which isn't as nice. But otherwise, very good. Make sure you have good shoes... for certain areas of the Champeaux cliffs.

A beautiful route enjoyed in fine weather. Remarkable views of Mont St Michel and Tombelaine. You can see Cancale and Pointe du Grouin. I highly recommend it!

Departure from Saint Pair, following the GR 223 southwards through the bocage. We then left the GR to follow the valley of the painters to Carolles and descended the Lude valley to the Vauban hut and the Pointe de Champeaux (the most interesting part). Return via Jullouville beach to Saint Pair, where the fabulous crêpes of L'Hippocampe (church square) awaited us.

A very beautiful hike. We started at Val Saint Pair to get a better view of Mont St Michel.
The second part of the route after Cabane Vauban (towards St Jean Le Thomas) is very difficult (steep climbs, large rocks to climb over and descents...). Walking sticks and good walking shoes are essential.
It's a magnificent hike.
