Description of the walk

Car park at the old Belvèze-du-Razès station.

Yellow and red markings forthe GRP® Tourdu Razés.

(S/E) On leaving the car park, head north-east along Avenue des Des Prunus, then turn right onto Rue de la Combe Sourde and left onto Chemin de Routier. Leave the village and continue along the dirt track.

(1) Turn right and continue straight on until you reach a junction with a tarmac road,

(2) Cross this and continue straight on for 500 m until you reach another road.

(3) Turn right, cross a ford and head towards the village of Routier. Once in the village, take the second hairpin bend on the right.

(4) Take this, pass by the church and continue straight on to the water tower. Follow the D702, Route d’Alaigne for approximately 600 m.

(5) Turn left onto a stony track between the vineyards and continue south-west until you reach the entrance to the sewage treatment plant.
View of the village of Alaigne on the right.

(6) At the three-way junction, veer left until you reach the junction with the D102, cross straight ahead, then continue along the track for about 300 m and turn right onto an uphill track.

(7) When you reach the D52 in Alaigne, turn right towards the village centre, passing under the church porch (Porte Pépy), cross the square straight ahead and turn left onto the Promenade du Vieux Pressoir, passing the post office.
Follow the promenade to the junction with Rue de la Chapelle.

(8) Follow this road to the right as far as the cemetery and continue along the path to its left. Carry on straight ahead, ignoring the various paths on either side, until you reach a farm.

(9) Turn right onto the path leading up to the Pech des Trois Seigneurs: highest point at 443 m with a signpost.

(10) Head straight down, ignoring the path on the right at the start, and pass in front of the Domaine Chevalier to reach the D52.

(11) Turn left onto the tarmac road until you reach the Domaine de Manéque crossroads.

(12) Turn left onto the dirt track for 200 m and turn right onto a steep slope until you reach the tarmac road, where you turn right.

(13) At the junction with the D52 at Col de Marmagés, continue straight on towards La Bordére, following the yellow-striped MTB 45 signposting.
After 300 m, turn right onto the dirt track, leaving the entrance to the Bordére estate on your left.
Head down towards the Domaine de Turonis, then turn left onto the tarmac road towards the D102.

(14) Turn left onto the D102 and after 300 m turn right at the Domaine de Cazes. Ride straight through the estate and past the weather station.

(15) When you reach the woods, turn left, follow the path down to the edge of the woods and turn left twice. Continue for 100 m and turn right between two fields to climb back up to the ridge (the path is barely visible; there are markings on the electricity pole).

(16) At the ridge, turn left towards the cypress tree and head down to the left along the vineyards for 200 m, then turn right.
Cross the tarmac road straight ahead as you head back down towards Belvéze-du-Razés.

(17) Once on Chemin de la Rai, continue straight ahead, then turn right onto Avenue des Prunus and arrive, on the left, at the car park of the old Belvèze-du-Razès station (S/E).

The start is a bit tricky as you need to find the right spot at the station, which is currently undergoing renovation. From there, the signposting is clear. Do not park in the first car park you come across next to the post office when arriving from Castelnaudary or Limoux, as this makes the start of the walk harder to find. Otherwise, a demanding route with ascents and descents, especially when you have to face a fierce and cold headwind, as was the case yesterday on this Sunday at the end of February 2023. A beautiful panorama from the Pech des Trois Seigneurs, with Bugarach still snow-covered and superbly illuminated by a ray of sunshine. A few long stretches on tarmac, particularly after the descent from the Pech des Trois Seigneurs.
The main problem was finding the route back to point 15: the path runs through the middle of a ploughed field, with the only landmarks being markings on electricity poles in the middle of the field. So there is no longer any path, track or trail. Beyond that, it was an easy return to the village, where there’s a lovely bistro to enjoy a comforting hot drink.
Cheers everyone!

A lovely walk. Over the years, a few of the signs explaining the characteristics of the grape varieties have gone missing… we put one back up that had fallen over. Only the information about Cot and Merlot remains. A shame. The highlight of the day: make sure to book in advance to visit the Cazes experimental vineyard at the end of the walk.

Description rated "average"... a few disappointments.
-(D): 231 m but (A): 291 m?
-Leaving the car park: which way? It’s very large and open on all sides.
-Avenue des Prunus, very long: where do you join it? So you can head north-east and find Rue de la Combe Sourde?
-(15): turn left twice: didn’t quite understand.
That said, I really enjoyed this undulating route through some lovely villages. A pleasant, peaceful, quiet route, not busy at all.
