Gorge Trail Stage 6 – From Todtmoos to Wehr

The Schluchtensteig trail leads in six stages over 119 km from Stühlingen to Wehr, right across the southern Black Forest.

The last stage is the longest at almost 24 km and takes us through the wonderful Wehraschlucht gorge and later high above the Wehra river and then down to the Wehrastausee lake. Along the Wehra, we hike directly into the centre of Wehr.

Description of the walk

You can reach Todtmoos from St. Blasien, for example, by taking bus 7321. From Wehr, you can take the SBG bus 7320 back to Todtmoos.

(S) Behind the covered bus stop, a footbridge crosses the stream, where our route leads to the centre of Todtmoos. We follow the signs for the Schluchtensteig trail on the main road to the left, turn right at the T-junction onto Murgtalstraße, then straight ahead and shortly afterwards turn right uphill onto Kurparkweg. We follow this road uphill on asphalt.

(1) We reach a fork and continue slightly uphill in the same direction, now on Herrenkopfweg. At the top, we continue straight ahead, now slightly downhill. As soon as the road bends left in a hairpin bend, we continue straight ahead uphill and pass a car park. We follow our signpost.

(2) Immediately after the sign for the pension insurance clinic, turn left onto a narrow path into the forest. At the next intersection, continue diagonally across the flat terrain onto Weiherweg. Follow the signposts slightly uphill on the unpaved forest path until you reach a bench.

(3) Keep right and you will reach a fork.

(4) Here, take the right-hand path, ignore all further turnings and you will reach Schwarzenbacher Straße, which you follow to the left according to the signpost.

(5) Pass the Schwarzenbach town sign and walk along Alten Kirchweg through the village, passing a cross on your left and following the Schluchtensteig sign, turning left at the next fork downhill into Hangstraße. The path leads past the Gasthof Sternen inn and you will reach the mechanical workshop.

(6) We walk straight ahead across the crossroads, cross the Sägebach stream on the Gatterweg, pass a car park and walk uphill on the road until we reach a bend. Here we turn left, leave the last houses behind us and take the left-hand path at the next fork. In the forest, we ignore all turnings. After about 1.5 km, we reach a slightly offset crossroads.

(7) Here, we turn left and then immediately right, always following the Schluchtensteig sign. Finally, we reach the Wehrer Landstraße, which we follow to the right for about 100 metres, past the Au-Zumkeller-Säge bus stop.

(8) Shortly afterwards, take the first turn-off to the left, cross the Wehra on Talstraße and immediately afterwards turn sharply right into the forest and follow the Schluchtensteig sign on the main path. At a fork, keep right, cross a stream and you will reach the house on Mühlenbach.

(9) Here, we keep to the right, walk along Mühlenmatt road through the village of Todtmoos-Au and pass St. Josef's Chapel in the village.

(10) Shortly afterwards, we reach Wehrer Straße. We walk along this road for about 150 metres to the left. Before we reach the Wehra, we turn left into Schwandhaldenweg and follow our sign. At the second fork, we keep left – i.e. do not go uphill. In a second sharp right-hand bend, we cross a stream.

(11) Then turn sharp right. Follow the Schwandbach and keep straight ahead at the next intersection to reach Rüttener Sträßle and then a fork.

(12) Here, turn left, leave the main path and follow the path uphill. At a fork, keep right. You will pass a table with benches, somewhat hidden to your right on a small hill.

(13) We follow our path until we reach the forest road, which we follow a few metres to the right until we reach a crossroads.

(14) Here, we turn sharply right and follow the Hagenmattgraben downhill on the Gemeindesträßle. Be careful at the next fork, take the sharp right turn, follow the Unterer Ehwaldweg along the Sägengraben for a short while and then turn right again onto a narrow path. Now the path descends relatively steeply along the Hagenmattgraben, always following the signs for Schluchtensteig.

(15) You will reach the paved road at the bridge, cross the Wehra, then the road (be careful, fast cars) and go directly opposite onto the narrow path into the forest. Follow the signposts uphill, pass the view of the Felsenhütte and cross the Heiterspanbach. After about 500 m, you will reach a fork.

(16) Follow the signpost to the left downhill and keep right at the next fork. At the old cabbage patch, continue downhill. The path winds downhill in small switchbacks, briefly uphill, then steadily downhill. You will reach a forest road.

(17) Follow this path downhill to the right and at the next fork, turn back onto your path, downhill to the left. The path becomes steeper for a short while, then leave the path and continue to the right onto the Jockisebeneweg, which you follow, initially remaining at roughly the same altitude. After approx. 1.5 km, you will reach a fork.

(18) Here, we turn left onto Stollisgrabenweg, which descends steeply again in places. After a hairpin bend to the left, we reach the Wehrastausee lake, along whose shore we walk. We cross the dam.

(19) At the end, before reaching the paved road, turn right and follow the path. Keep to the left of the weir and continue walking between the weir and Todtmooser Straße. At a T-junction in front of the outdoor swimming pool, turn right.

(20) We cross the weir and continue on the other side of the river, upstream.

(21) At the next bridge, we change sides of the stream again. We continue our way to the right, along the weir, following the Schluchtensteig sign. To the left of the stream, we follow the path towards the town centre. We follow the path to the junction with the L155 (Waldstraße), turn right, cross the weir again and then take the second street on the left into the main street.

(22) On the left, we pass the town hall, where the Schluchtensteig officially ends. The corresponding sign can also be found here. We continue on the main road and reach the station square.

(E) You've made it – this is where the buses depart.
