Description of the walk

It is difficult to reach Blumberg by public transport. If you are dependent on public transport and only want to hike the second stage, you can start the tour at the Wutachmühle (7). There is also no bus service at the end point, Schattenmühle. If you want to use public transport, you will have to climb up through the Lotenbachklamm gorge at the end and take bus no. 7258 towards Bonndorf or Neustadt railway station at the Gündelwangen, Lotenbachklamm bus stop.

Start: Narrenbrunnen (near the intersection of Hauptstraße and Friedhofstraße, 78176 Blumberg), parking available near the town hall.

(S) We start our tour along the main road, away from the Hirschen inn towards the end of the village. The paved road ends at the edge of the forest and we follow the hiking trail marked with the Schluchtensteig sign. The trail leads steeply downhill in small switchbacks through the forest – caution is advised when wet.
The last steep section is covered by an 8-metre-long metal ladder with 20 rungs, which you climb down almost vertically.

(1) We reach the Schleifenbach waterfall. After that, the trail climbs just as steeply back up the steps, which can also be slippery when wet.

(2) Here, the bypass, which leads over the roundabout on Friedhofstraße via Im Winkel and Feldbergweg, meets the Schluchtensteig. We follow the only path through the forest to a clearing. Pay close attention to the signs here.

(3) Directly at the edge of the forest, we turn left onto a meadow path along the edge of the forest. We reach the forest path again. We continue straight ahead downhill, cutting across the curve. When we meet the path again, we follow it to the left downhill to the road. On the left is St. Jakobskapelle.

(4) Directly in front of the bridge on the opposite side of the road, you can quench your thirst (trust fund). We have reached Achdorf. The Schluchtensteig trail leads us over the Schleifenbach stream to a T-junction, where we follow Blumberger Straße to the left. At the next opportunity, turn left onto the Uferweg towards the sewage treatment plant, then turn right shortly afterwards and immediately left again onto a narrow path parallel to the Wutach river along the properties.

(5) After the last garden, we turn right, walk along the wall, cross Lindenstraße and follow the gravel forest road slightly uphill to the left. At the next fork, turn right downhill towards the road. We follow Wutachstraße to the right and walk on the pavement through the village of Aselfingen, ignoring any turnings. At the end of the pavement at the bus stop, cross the road and shortly afterwards follow the signpost towards Wutach. Cross the Wutach river, walk straight ahead for a short distance and then turn right upstream along the gravel path. Again, ignore any turn-offs and follow the signpost slightly uphill through the forest. After a clearing on the hilltop, take care.

(6) Here, take a narrow path downhill. Then follow the forest road out of the forest, keeping the road on your left, which you will eventually reach. Walk to the right of the road on the narrow path, then continue on the pavement, cross the Wutach river on the large bridge and you will reach the Wutachmühle kiosk.

(7) If you want to skip the detour to the kiosk, cross the road at the apex of the curve and you will reach the Wutachmühle inn directly.

(8) Here, our route passes the silo on the right and heads back towards Wutach on the Bühlertälerweg, following the Wutach upstream.

(9) At the Kanadiersteg footbridge with signpost, the Gauchach flows into the Wutach. Stay on the left side of the river and hike through the Wutach Gorge on the marked trail.

(10) At the Wutach exit, there is a rope-secured passage, but it is easy to negotiate. The path leads uphill, shortly after which we cross the Wutach via a footbridge and hike uphill on the right side of the river.

(11) We reach the Bachheimer Bank. We continue straight ahead until we cross the Wutach again at the next bridge and have a clear view of the Rümmele Steg.

(12) We follow the only path, pass another rope safety device and a few steps.

(13) We pass a gravel bed. Opposite the mighty rocks, we now continue hiking close to the Wutach.

(14) The path climbs again at the stairs and we finally reach a crossroads high up at the Schurhammerhütte.

(15) We continue straight ahead, enjoying an unobstructed view of the mighty rock gallery on the Wutach, and finally reach the Tannegger waterfall.

(16) Continue to the left of the Wutach to the Bad Boll chapel.

(17) Shortly afterwards, we turn right and cross the Wutach on the arched bridge. We reach a crossroads, turn sharp left and continue upstream on the right side of the river. Our path widens and leads us through the forest, past another crossing. Shortly afterwards, we pass the Dietfurter waterfall.

(18) The path narrows again and we pass the sign for the Oberdietfurt ruins.

(19) Finally, we hike along a beautiful forest path overgrown with roots, winding its way up and down through the forest. We reach a clearing, which we pass halfway around in a clockwise direction, then our path leads straight ahead through a hollow lane back into the forest and to the Wutach. Finally, the path descends and we reach a road.

(20) At the information board for the Schattenmühle, we follow the paved path to the right, past the farm to the terrace of the restaurant. We go up the stairs on the right.

(E) You can stay overnight at the Schattenmühle inn.
