It is difficult to reach Blumberg by public transport. If you rely on public transport and only wish to walk the second stage, you can start the walk at Wutachmühle (7). There is also no bus service at the end point, Schattenmühle. If you wish to use public transport, you will need to walk up through the Lotenbach Gorge at the end of the route and take bus no. 7258 from the Gündelwangen, Lotenbachklamm bus stop towards Bonndorf or Neustadt railway station.
Start: Narrenbrunnen (near the junction of Hauptstraße and Friedhofstraße, 78176 Blumberg), parking available near the town hall.
(S) We start our walk along Hauptstraße, heading away from the Hirschen inn towards the edge of the village. The tarmac road ends at the edge of the wood, and we follow the footpath marked with the ‘Schluchtensteig’ sign. The path leads steeply downwards through the wood in small hairpin bends – take care when it’s wet.
The final steep section is covered via an 8-metre-long metal ladder with 20 rungs, which you descend almost vertically.
(1) We reach the Schleifenbach waterfall. Afterwards, the path climbs just as steeply back up via steps; there is also a risk of slipping here if the ground is wet.
(2) This is where the bypass route – which leads via the roundabout on Friedhofstraße, along Im Winkel and Feldbergweg – joins the Schluchtensteig. We follow the only path through the woods until we reach a clearing. Pay close attention to the signposting here.
(3) Right at the edge of the wood, we turn left onto a meadow path running along the edge of the wood. We reach the forest track again. We continue straight ahead downhill, cutting across the bend. When we rejoin the path, we follow it to the left and downhill to the road. On the left is St Jakob’s Chapel.
(4) Just before the bridge, on the opposite side of the road, you can quench your thirst (pay-as-you-go box). We have reached Achdorf. The Schluchtensteig leads us across the Schleifenbach to a T-junction, where we follow Blumberger Straße to the left. At the next opportunity, we turn left onto the Uferweg towards the sewage treatment works, then shortly afterwards turn right and immediately left again onto a narrow path running parallel to the Wutach alongside the properties.
(5) After the last garden, we turn right, walk along the wall, cross Lindenstraße and follow the gravel forest track to the left, slightly uphill. At the next fork, turn right downhill towards the road. We follow Wutachstraße to the right and walk along the pavement through the village of Aselfingen, ignoring any turn-offs. At the end of the pavement by the bus stop, we cross to the other side of the road and, shortly afterwards, follow the signpost towards Wutach. We also cross the River Wutach, walk straight ahead for a short distance and then follow the gravel path to the right, upstream. We again ignore any turn-offs and follow the signpost slightly uphill through the woods. After a clearing on the hilltop, we need to be careful.
(6) Here, the route takes you down a narrow path. Then, follow the forest track out of the woods, with the road to your left, which you’ll eventually reach. Walk to the right of the road along the narrow path, then continue along the footpath, cross the River Wutach via the large bridge and reach the Wutachmühle kiosk.
(7) If you’d rather skip the detour to the kiosk, cross the road at the apex of the bend to reach the Wutachmühle inn directly.
(8) Here, our route takes us past the silo on the right, back towards the Wutach along the Bühlertälerweg, and from here on we follow the Wutach upstream.
(9) At the Kanadiersteg jetty with its signpost, the Gauchach flows into the Wutach; we stay on the left bank of the river and walk through the Wutach Gorge along the marked path.
(10) At the point where the Wutach emerges, there is a section secured with ropes, but it is easy to negotiate. The path leads uphill; shortly afterwards, we cross the Wutach via a footbridge and walk uphill to the right of the river.
(11) We reach the Bachheimer Bank. We continue straight on until we cross the Wutach again at the next bridge and have a clear view of the Rümmele Steg.
(12) We follow the only path, passing another section secured with ropes as well as a few steps.
(13) We pass a gravel bed. With the mighty rocks opposite us, we now continue our walk close to the Wutach.
(14) At the steps, the path climbs again and we eventually reach a junction high up at the Schurhammerhütte.
(15) We continue straight on, with a clear view of the imposing rock formations along the Wutach, and eventually reach the Tannegger Waterfall.
(16) We continue to the left of the Wutach as far as the Bad Boll Chapel.
(17) Shortly afterwards, we turn off to the right and cross the Wutach via the arched bridge. We reach a junction, take a sharp left and now continue upstream on the right-hand bank of the river. Our path widens and leads us through the forest, past another crossing. Shortly afterwards, we pass the Dietfurt Waterfall.
(18) The path narrows again; we pass the signpost for the Oberdietfurt ruins.
(19) Finally, we walk along a lovely forest path overgrown with roots, winding up and down through the woods. We reach a clearing, which we walk halfway round clockwise along the edge; then our path leads straight on through a narrow passageway back into the woods and to the Wutach. Eventually, the path leads downhill and we reach a tarmac road.
(20) At the information board for the Schattenmühle, we follow the tarmac path to the right, past the farm to the terrace of the restaurant. We take the stairs up to the right.
(E) You can stay overnight at the Schattenmühle inn.
