Discover the Rhine Falls in Switzerland

The Rhine Falls are waterfalls located between Neuhausen (right bank) and Flurlingen (left bank) in Switzerland, downstream from Schaffhausen. With a height of 23 metres and a width of 150 metres, they are among the largest in Europe. When the Rhine has its average flow, 750m3/s of water rushes over the rocks.

Description of the walk

Park in one of the car parks in Neuhausen am Rheinfall (from the town centre, follow the brown signs for "Rheinfall"). Please note that these car parks are pay-and-display (CHF 5 for the first hour, then CHF 2 for each additional hour. You can pay in euros, but the machine will give you change in Swiss francs).

(S/E) From the car park, take the dirt track down to the falls. Once you reach the bottom, turn left and walk along the riverbank towards the falls.
You will arrive at the entrance to Schloss Wôrth. Continue straight ahead.

(1) After the bend, at the intersection, take the path on the right which, after crossing a small bridge, will take you up some steps above the falls. There are numerous viewpoints from which you can admire the landscape.
Turn right to take the railway bridge, which is accessible to pedestrians. You will arrive on the other bank.

(2) When you arrive at the entrance to Schloss Laufen, there are two routes to choose from:
- Cross the castle courtyard, visit the castle, then descend to the foot of the falls either on foot or by panoramic lift (cost: 5CHF per person, payable in euros or by credit card). On foot, you will walk alongside the falls, which are very impressive due to their flow (don't miss the passage under the small cave), and you will arrive at the footbridge directly opposite the large waterfall.
Go around the castle, then take the path on the right that leads down to the water.

Walk along the riverbank again. There is a jetty where you can take a boat across for a few euros to reach the other side directly if you want to shorten the walk. Otherwise, continue to the Nohl Bridge.

(3) Just before the bridge, you can get into the Rhine at a small "beach". If it's hot, you'll even see several swimmers jumping in to float with the current (watch out for the few boats passing underneath). Cross the bridge, then turn right.

(4) When you reach an intersection, take the dirt track that climbs to the left to return to the car park (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 394 m - Rheinfall car park
  2. 1 : km 0.83 - alt. 374 m - Right path
  3. 2 : km 1.66 - alt. 396 m - Schloss Laufen
  4. 3 : km 2.67 - alt. 376 m - Nohl Bridge - Rhin (fleuve)
  5. 4 : km 2.97 - alt. 367 m - On the left, dirt track
  6. S/E : km 3.2 - alt. 390 m - Rheinfall car park

Notes

Bring your swimsuit to enjoy the Rhine.

There are numerous fountains along the route where you can cool off. You will also find many snack bars and restaurants, but prices are quite high. There are several souvenir shops.

Bring some cash as you can't always pay by card. Euros are accepted but change is given in Swiss francs. Don't worry about the exchange rate, as 1 CHF = 1€ there.

The walk is easy. Allow two hours to take your time and take photos. If you want to take the boat, choose the scenic route and go for a swim. You can easily spend the afternoon there.

Worth a visit

At Schloss Wôrth: if you want to take a boat trip (several routes at different prices are available, but please note that credit cards are not accepted).
Several boat routes are available to get closer to the falls. We opted for route 4, which lasts 15 minutes and costs 6CHF/person, and we were not disappointed because the boat goes very close and you can feel the force of such a mass of water. The boat rocks quite a bit and you even get a few drops of water on you. Despite the large crowds in August (the site is very touristy, especially in July and August when the flow is at its highest), we didn't have to wait long.

The panoramic walk from Schloss Laufen Castle is also worth it, even if you have to pay for it.

There is a tree-top adventure park on the Neuhausen side for those who want a thrill.

Note: the final part of the route (right bank of the Rhine after the footbridge leading back to the car park) was closed.
Tip 1: arrive early in the morning (9 a.m., no parking problems), but wait until evening to take photographs (sunlight)
Tip 2: The lift mentioned is subject to a charge, but provides special access to the viewing platform on the left bank.

It took us three hours to complete the route at a leisurely pace, and the total cost was €12 (€5 for the first hour and €2 for each additional hour) for parking, but there were no other options. The site is remarkable, but extremely busy at this time of year. Only the return journey after the train station offered a little peace and quiet. Thank you for the walk.
