Reach Saint-Romain-de-Popey from L'Arbresle or Saint-Bel.
Park your vehicle in the car park next to the church.
(S/E) From the church, head towards Le Bancillon along the road that climbs uphill (Montée de l'Église) for 400 m until you reach a fork.
(1) Turn right onto the steep road that climbs towards Le Bancillon. There is a dead-end sign. You will arrive at the Calvary.
(2) Take the small ridge path to the right and follow it to the Croix du Crêt.
(3) Take the road that climbs opposite between the reservoir on the right and the houses on the left. Follow it for about 1300 m until you reach an intersection.
(4) Take the wide path on the right that climbs towards the summit of Grand Bois, where you will reach the highest point of the route (altitude 742). Descend the path for about 600 m until you reach a crossroads with a small road on the left.
(5) Take the road that climbs up to the right in a hairpin bend to the hamlet of Les Martinières.
(6) At the houses, take the path that descends west towards Le Giroud.
(7) At the intersection, turn right and continue to the hamlet, where you should take the road on the left and follow it to Plat du Mont. There is a picnic area with several tables. Turn right and continue to the Calvary after the bus stop.
(8) Follow the path on the right between the houses to the small hamlet of L'Épinglier.
(9) Turn right before the houses onto the sunken lane that descends to the road. Follow it to the right until you reach the intersection with the spring on your left. Turn left and continue to the Ferme du Fenouillet.
(10) Then turn right onto the road and continue for about 700 m until you reach the second crossroads.
(11) Take the road on the left, which descends to Le Teilloux in Saint-Romain.
(12) In the hamlet, turn right, cross the Ruisseau du Brezet and take the path that climbs opposite towards the Brézet farm. After the farm, continue along the path that climbs towards the small pass of Bois de Varenne with a calvary.
(13) Descend towards Saint-Romain-de-Popey, always taking the roads on the right at each crossroads, and rejoin the (S/E).
superb route. It starts with a slightly steep climb, but it's possible to do this hike with the family.
