Park in the car park of the multi-purpose hall in Saint-Romain-de-Popey.
(S/E) Quickly join the D33 departmental road.
(1) Cross at the crossroads and take the road that climbs up opposite. At the top of the road, turn right onto the road towards the village.
(2) Take the first left before the church, at a place called Les Grandes Roches. Continue along this small road until you reach a path through the woods that leads to a road. Continue straight ahead towards the Croix du Crêt, pass the Varenne farm and arrive at the intersection with the Route des Gouttes.
(3) At the intersection, turn left and then take the first path, the Croix du Poirier, which climbs to the left and continues to the cross.
(4) At the cross, turn left onto the path that climbs steeply through the Bois de Varenne and joins a road. Continue on the left and arrive at the intersection at the Croix du Crêt.
(5) Turn left onto Chemin des Crêtes and stay on this road until you reach Croix du Bancillon.
(6) Continue straight ahead to the crossroads to reach the picnic area. Leave the path that descends and continue straight ahead towards Mont de Popey (607 m) to discover a beautiful panorama.
(7) After climbing Mont de Popey, descend and take the next path on the left, which joins the path coming from the picnic area and winds down to a small road that leads to a crossroads.
(8) Follow the road to the left for a few metres, then leave it and take the small road on the right. Be careful here, as the path is not signposted. Go down to the right through the cherry orchard before the first house and its thuja hedge, continue to a small housing estate and follow this small road straight ahead until you reach a bend that leads to the D33 departmental road.
(9) Follow the road on the right for a few dozen metres. Follow the path that climbs to the right and continue to the top, to the crossroads (there is a small stone hut and a departmental signpost indicating Les Brosses).
(10) Turn onto the first path that climbs to the right towards Carnoux. You will soon reach the edge of the forest.
Continue until you reach a small road, turn left towards Le Bigot and descend slightly to reach another crossroads with a hairpin bend that climbs to the right.
(11) Turn right onto this road and continue straight ahead, passing through some houses until you reach a small road, keeping to the left. You will arrive at the junction with the D33 departmental road. Take the small road opposite, lined with cherry trees, and the first road on the right.
(8) Take the end of the road you already took at the Croix de Mullin sign, then turn 90° right onto the path (enjoy the poems left along the side of the path). Continue along this path, which runs along the edge of the forest and descends into a cherry orchard. From there, you will see the village of Saint-Romain-de-Popey.
(12) Turn right, then go down the steps on the small path on the left. At the road, turn left and return to the original crossroads.
(1) Retrace your steps to return to the car park at the village hall (S/E).
a magnificent walk around St Romain de Popey where you can pick a few cherries (without getting caught by the owner). There are magnificent views of the Monts du Lyonnais. Well done for this walk.
. make sure you have a map and my phone with Google Maps and GPS helped me find my way at times, especially on the paved sections and around houses, but that's just a minor detail and doesn't spoil this beautiful hike. A good balance of sunny and wooded sections, magnificent landscapes and lots of cherry trees for those with a sweet tooth.
