Park in the car park of the multi-purpose hall in Saint-Romain-de-Popey.
(S/E) Quickly join the D33 departmental road.
(1) Cross it at the crossroads and take the path that climbs up opposite. At the top of the path, turn right onto the road towards the village.
(2) Take the first left before the church, at a place called Les Grandes Roches. Continue along this small road until you reach a path through the woods that leads to a road. Continue straight on towards Croix du Crêt, pass the Varenne farm and arrive at the intersection with Route des Gouttes.
(3) At the intersection, turn left and then take the first path, the Croix du Poirier, which climbs to the left, and continue to the cross.
(4) At the cross, turn left onto the path that climbs steeply through the Bois de Varenne and joins a road. Continue on the left and arrive at the intersection at Croix du Crêt.
(5) Turn left onto Chemin des Crêtes and stay on this path until you reach Croix du Bancillon.
(6) Continue straight ahead to the crossroads to reach the picnic area. Leave the path that descends and continue straight ahead towards Mont de Popey (607 m) to discover a beautiful panorama.
(7) After climbing Mont de Popey, descend and take the next path on the left, which joins the path coming from the picnic area and winds down to a small road that leads to a crossroads.
(8) Follow the road to the left for a few metres, then leave it and take the small road on the right, Chemin de Chanton, and follow it to the end.
(9) At a place called Le Guéret, turn right and follow the D33E until you find a path on the right, after the left-hand bend.
(10) Take the path that climbs to the right and continue to the top, to the crossroads (there is a small stone hut and a departmental signpost indicating: Les Brosses).
(11) Turn onto the first path that climbs to the right, towards Carnoux. You will soon reach the edge of the forest.
Continue until you reach a small road, turn left towards Le Bigot and descend slightly to reach another crossroads with a hairpin bend path going up to the right.
(12) Turn right onto this path and continue straight ahead, passing through some houses until you reach the small road, then keep left. You will arrive at the junction with the D33 departmental road. Take the small road opposite, lined with cherry trees, and the first path on the right.
(8) Take the end of the road you already took at the Croix de Mullin sign, then turn 90° right onto the path (enjoy the poems left along the way). Continue along this path, which runs along the edge of the forest and descends into a cherry orchard. From here, you can see the village of Saint-Romain-de-Popey.
(13) Turn right, then go down the steps on the small path on the left. At the road, turn left and return to the original crossroads.
(1) Retrace your steps to return to the car park at the community hall (S/E).
a magnificent walk around St Romain de Popey where you can pick a few cherries (without getting caught by the owner). There are magnificent views of the Monts du Lyonnais. Well done for this walk.
