Roetgen walks

Set off to explore the North-Eastern Hautes Fagnes plateau from Roetgen, where the Vesdre, Eschbach and Steinbach rivers flow, feeding the northern branch of the Eupen Dam – which serves as both a drinking water reservoir and a hydroelectric power station. Kutenhard is the area of the Fagnes where the Eschbach has its source. The Steinbach, a tributary of the Eschbach which you will cross twice, rises a little further east in the Imgenbroicher Venn. Forests, heathland and peat bogs form the main theme of this circular walk. Reinhartzhof is a former hamlet consisting of a few farms, situated on the pilgrimage route between Trier and Aachen. First mentioned inthe 14th century, it was forced to cease its livestock farming activities to preserve water quality following the construction of the Vesdre dam. The Vesdre diversion canal serves the same purpose: to protect water quality should pollution be detected in the built-up area of Roetgen.

A gentle descent along the Inde river in the Fagnes, from Raeren to Kornelimünster. You will discover the old water mills of the town dedicated to Saint Kornelius since Louis the Pious.

Dropped off at the Tina car park in Raeren (B), you’ll discover the early days of India. The route follows the river, which, growing ever deeper, carves its valley through woods, heathland and meadows. It is fed by eight tributaries and once powered a network of watermills, which can still be seen in their original state. After the town of Kornelimünster (D) and its basilica dedicated to St Cornelius (founded in 814 by Louis the Pious, son and successor of Charlemagne), the river resumes its course to flow into the Rur, which joins the Meuse at Roermond (NL). You leave the Inder at Brand Aachen (D) at the car park on the Freunder Landstrasse L220, where your driver will collect you.

A lovely walk around an engineering structure between spruce and oak forests. Along forest paths, you will discover the beautiful Helle Valley and the Vesdre dam lake at the confluence of the Getz and Vesdre (Weser) rivers.

For those who like to cover a lot of ground, there are various forests (coniferous and deciduous) to explore, as well as the boardwalks and peat bogs of the Hautes Fagnes.

Discover one of Belgium’s wildest rivers, the Helle (Hill in German), starting from the old forest house at Ternell, and the Hautes-Fagnes where it rises. A long nature walk over varied terrain: forest paths (deciduous and spruce), dry and wet grassy paths and tracks, boardwalks (over very marshy ground), stony paths, tarmac paths.

Do you like moorland landscapes? Are you fond of boardwalks? Then you should enjoy this walk! This walk takes you to the Brackvenn moor, near the German border. The walk takes place in the forest, in the moors, along stretches of water... The landscapes are varied and truly delightful.

This hike will delight lovers of the Hautes-Fagnes and wetlands. The highlights include the boardwalks in the southern part of Brackvenn, the trail in the Spohrbach valley, the confluence of the Spohrbach and the Helle (Hill in German) and the border marker trail (at the end of the route).

Hike with quite a few forest trails.

The hike takes you on a long tour of the Obersee, the central part of the Rursee complex, which consists of three stepped lakes and three dams. The Obersee is located between the Urftsee and the Rursee itself.Located in the heart of the Eifel National Park, the Rursee guarantees magnificent landscapes. In addition to lakes and forests, this hike takes you through moorland to the ghost village of Wollseifen, with its St. Roch Church and school museum.Located near the large Nazi elite training centre in Volgelsang, Wollseifen was heavily damaged by bombing during the Second World War and then completely razed by the British army to make way, just after the war, for the Vogelsang military training camp, which,since the withdrawal of British and then Belgian troops from Germany, has been converted into a memorial centre.

This cross-border walk on the border between the Hautes Fagnes and Germany between Montjoie (Monschau) and Sourbrodt (Waimes) starts on the RAVeL (Belgian enclave of the Vennbahn) at the former Reichenstein stop near the Reichenstein Convent (Kloster) on the road between Mützenich and Kalterherberg.Discover this pure joy away from the tourist crowds in the Hautes Fagnes.

A forest walk that crosses the border (a little) into Belgium and (a lot) into Germany. Starting from the Reichenstein stop on the Vennbahn, the hike begins in the direction of Kreuz im Venn and its cave before crossing Ruitzhof, a German hamlet enclaved in Belgium, and then reaching the pretty Rur valley.Different atmospheres guaranteed depending on the season.

Discover Noir Flohay, a group of petrified pine trees. In the middle of this landscape typical of the Hautes Fagnes, the return journey is along the Helle, a small river that rises in the Fagnes. There are two possible shortcuts, for circuits of approximately 7 and 13 km respectively.

The Hautes-Fagnes plateau is pure bliss! Everything there is magnificent... whether the weather is blue skies, mist or snow. Do avoid weekends (too crowded) or rainy weather, however!The two iconic rivers that rise on this plateau near Baraque Michel are the Helle and the Hoëgne. Both are tributaries of the Vesdre, the former at Eupen, the latter at Pepinster.

A walk with varied landscapes in the Hautes Fagnes Nature Park. There are many walks to enjoy in this region with its extraordinary landscapes. I invite you to discover the hike we did as a family in July 2019. The children enjoyed the watchtowers, the duckboards, the streams... We even saw a deer. If necessary, it is possible to shorten this route. It is an easy hike as there is little elevation gain, but the path is uneven in places.

This hike on the Hautes Fagnes plateau in the Hautes-Fagnes-Eifel Natural Park will take you to the highest point in Belgium, where you can discover its unique flora and landscape. The hike is more enjoyable during the week (fewer people) in good weather or when there is snow on the ground.
