Tour du Noir Flohay

Discover Noir Flohay, a group of petrified pine trees. In the middle of this landscape typical of the Hautes Fagnes, the return journey is along the Helle, a small river that rises in the Fagnes. There are two possible shortcuts, for circuits of approximately 7 and 13 km respectively.

Description of the walk

Start at the Baraque Michel car park.

(S/E) Head east and follow the WM01 trail "La grande ronde des Fagnes". Continue straight ahead and ignore the turnoffs on the right.

(1) At the crossroads, turn left towards Noir Flohay and take the boardwalk. Walk north-north-east, then turn right at a 90° angle to reach an intersection.

(2) There are two options here:
- For a shorter version (7 km in total), turn right and rejoin the main route at (10).
- Otherwise, as shown on the map, continue straight ahead in an east-northeast direction.

(3) At the crossroads at the edge of a wood, there are two options:
- For a shorter version (13 km in total), turn right and rejoin the main route at (9).
- Otherwise, as shown on the map, continue straight ahead and cross the woods.

(4) Join the GR®56 and follow it to the left. Further on, walk along a river on your right and then turn away from it. Finally, cross the river and you will immediately come to a crossroads.

(5) Follow the GR®56 variant to the right, along the river. Further on, leave the river and continue south-southeast.

(6) When the path turns sharply to the left, leave it for another path on the right and cross a stream. Initially heading south, the path soon turns south-west. Ignore any paths branching off to the sides.

(7) Enter a wood. At a crossroads, continue straight ahead.

(8) At the T-junction, turn right and walk along the woods on your right. Further on, the path joins the river and crosses it.

(9) Turn left immediately (the path on the right is the end of the second shortcut). Follow the river on your left.

(10) At an intersection, continue straight ahead (the path on the right is the end of the first shortcut). Continue along the river on your left. Further on, cross the river and follow it on your right until you reach the junction you took at the start of the hike.

(1) Continue straight ahead and, taking the opposite route to the one you took on the way there, return to the car park (S/E).

The unmissable Noir Flohay (which is shrinking compared to 30 years ago) with a passage over the newly renovated duckboards. The light fog adds to the mystery. Then the scenery from Petit Bongard (point 3) and along the Helle changes and is truly beautiful.

As we were with a group, we appreciated the two shortcuts that allowed some of us to return to the starting point easily.
