Ria, countryside, seaside and Lesconil harbour

Walking up the Stêr estuary, an area ideal for bird watching in areas exposed at low tide, along paths and small country roads, the trail through the dunes and then along the seafront between large boulders, and finally the port of Lesconil, which has now lost its former aura.
Enough to satisfy the curiosity of hikers and give them the opportunity to enjoy a breath of fresh sea air.

Description of the walk

Arriving via the D102 in Lesconil, after a roundabout, at a large rock, turn left into Rue de La Fontaine, which continues after a stop sign into Rue Jules Ferry. Cross the bridge over the Stêr and shortly afterwards take the first street on the right, which leads to a small dirt car park near the Penn al Lann nature reserve.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, turn right at the sign for the Penn al Lann nature reserve and follow the coastal path towards the bridge.

Yellow markings (sign for the dolmens)

(1) Cross at the pedestrian crossing and take the path opposite that follows the Ria du Stêr (information panel on the re-estuarisation of the Stêr de Lesconil). Follow this ria, using the footbridges in places to make the crossing easier. There are a few information panels presenting the flora and fauna.

On the opposite bank, you can see Kerlut Castle, which is now used for receptions. Leave the sign for Chapelle de Plonivel on your right and continue to Manoir de Kerhoas, a typical example of a 16th-century Cornish manor house.

(2) Turn left at the end of the ria and continue along the path between the thorny hedges until you reach a small road. Turn left, cross a stream and continue straight on to join the D102 at a place called Pont Plat.

(3) Cross this busy road with extreme caution, especially in summer (there is no pedestrian crossing despite a road sign warning of pedestrians). Follow this road to the left, using the hard shoulder on the right.

No markings

Leave the yellow-marked road on your right, pass the sports ground car park and playground facilities and continue to the next road on the right.

(4) Turn right onto this road signposted Kervignon and pass a holiday village.

Yellow markings

Turn left onto a wide grassy path towards Guerveur, continue by turning right at a right angle and then left near a wash house. Look for a discreet fountain on your left and you will come to a small road.

(5) Turn right onto this road leading to Tréfiagat. Proceed with caution for about 500 metres, as the roadside is very narrow, and you will arrive at the Kersauz roundabout. Note the beautiful restoration of an old house in this locality.
Turn left to reach the dunes and Kersaux Beach (basic toilets).

Yellow +GR®34white and red markings

(6) Go through a gate and follow the path behind the dune to the left, heading east. On your left, you will see a pond where, during the breeding season, the frogs will treat you to a free concert. Pass the campsites and turn right to join the coastal path closest to the sea.

(7) At the Amer, located on the left above, take the path that runs along the rock formation called Goudoul, then the beach with the Croix des Amoureux. Continue on the same path, pass an old wash house by the sea and reach Rue de la Corniche.

(8) Turn right into an alleyway opposite the jetty, then left and continue to reach the western side of the quay.
To follow the entire length of the harbour quays, the route deviates from theGR® at times.
Follow the harbour quay as closely as possible, going around the restaurant "La Cantine", past the slipway for small boats and then close to the maritime cooperative on your left.

Continue around the right side of the old fish market on the east side and arrive at a rockfill area, which you follow via the footpath (viewpoint over the harbour entrance). Don't be surprised to see several cats, as people regularly come to feed them. Currently, 17 have found refuge here. Continue around all the buildings on the right, then pass by the top of the small beach.

(9) Continue along Rue Victor Hugo, lined with a somewhat neglected garden, then turn right onto the grassy esplanade and descend to the square behind the post office. On the right is the "Ster Nibilic", a small branch of the Stêr ria which was, in the first half ofthe 19th century, the original port of Lesconil.

(10) Turn right along a wall and follow the top of the ria. Find theGR® markings and climb onto the bridge.
If this is not possible due to the tide, follow theGR® along Rue Jeanne D'Arc opposite, then Rue du Ridou on the right.

(11) Turn right and continue along the bridge over the Stêr.

(1) Turn right onto the outward route and then look for a discreet path on the left in the vegetation. Follow it to return to the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Kerhoas Manor This is a typical example of a16th-century Cornish manor house, serving the dual purpose of a stately home and a working farm. Kerhoas Manor is freely accessible from the outside and has a shelter for hikers.
Port of Lesconil: From the golden age of fishing in the mid-1970s, when the port of Lesconil was home to 57 trawlers, the number fell to 29 in 1982, around 15 in 2001, 10 in 2005, 3 in 2011 and 2 in 2012.
The closure of the Lesconil fish market in 2008 dealt the final blow to the fleet. It resulted in the port being emptied of the half-dozen trawlers that were still moored there.
Only L'Odyssée (photo) remained attached to the port.

A small detour at the start of the route along the estuary, due to damage to the dyke.
Otherwise, no changes from the map.
A very beautiful hike.

A lovely walk between the countryside and the sea, along the banks of the Steir, passing by the harbour and beaches. It's a bit of a shame about the stretch on the roads between the Steir exit and the woodland section. I recommend it.

A beautiful route offering varied landscapes, ria, countryside and then back along the coast.
Easy, a bit of road but a must to complete a circular.

A very beautiful walk taken on 24/02/2019 in sunny weather. Low tide makes the section along the Ster particularly interesting, offering a beautiful natural environment. The section between Pont Plat and Kersauz has quite a few paved areas, but this is difficult to avoid in a circular route.
