Seaside, built-up areas and countryside in Loctudy

This flat route combines sections of coastal paths (GR®34 ), at least where the path is not diverted from the seafront due to buildings encroaching on the coastline, with small roads between built-up areas and the countryside. A lovely touch of heritage comes in the form of two small, unassuming chapels, each with its own votive fountain.

Description of the walk

Arriving via the D102 at Lesconil, after a roundabout, at a large boulder, turn left into Rue de la Fontaine, which continues as Rue de Jules Ferry after a Stop sign. Cross the bridge over the Stêr and shortly afterwards take the hairpin bend into the first street, which leads to a small clay car park near the Penn al Lann nature reserve.

GR®34: red and white markings

(S/E) With your back to the car park, head towards the dyke between a marsh and Anse de Lesconil to reach the coastal path. Continue south-east along the path behind the dune (collapsed dune crest). Then climb to the top of the dune, following the markings. Continue, overlooking a large campsite to your left and Plage des Sables Blancs to your right. Ignore the path leading down to the car park on the left and continue to the coastal path’s diversion.

(1) Turn left onto Chemin de Toul Sable, then left onto Rue des Sables Blancs. Then turn right onto Rue de la Palue du Cosquer, which is a diversion from the GR® due to the deterioration of the coastal path.

(2) Return to the old coastal path and follow it north-east. Leave the coast via Route du Traon, which you follow for about 300 m, letting the GR® branch off to the right via Rue de Pen ar But.

Unmarked

(3) At the roundabout, turn right, then right again at the small square. Take the passage between the houses to reach the Saint-Quido Chapel: a lovely grassy esplanade, a fountain and a picnic table. Return to Rue de Treguido, which you left earlier, and follow it to the right. Then turn right into Rue de Poulluen.

GR®34: red and white markings

(4) At Penanguer, rejoin the GR® which veers right into Impasse de Prat An Asquel, emerging behind a large bench facing the sea. Turn left and continue along the top of the beach to the slipway at Larvor Harbour.

(5) Head left up the access road to this slipway and turn immediately right. The GR® follows the coastline in a dotted line and the route corresponds to that of the GR® (alternative route available, see Practical Information). Note on the left a private property with a modern chapel (La Porte Ouverte). Continue on to reach Lodonnec Beach.

(6) Continue along the promenade by the beach until you reach a large car park: Place Suzanne Masson (at low tide, it is possible to walk along the beach to Pointe de Kérafédé).

(7) Continue along the road leading to Pointe de Kerafédé.

(8) Continue along the coastal path and, after the last house, carry on along the top of the beach until you reach a sea wall.

(9) Take the road on the left, ignore the first road on the left (small roundabout) and you will reach a dead end on the left.

No signposting

(10) Turn left into Impasse de Penland, then right into Venelle de Maez Hir. Continue along the footpath which joins Rue des Embruns and Place Suzanne Masson.

(7) Turn right and head for the junction at the start of Plage de Lodonnec.

(6) Turn right into Rue des Tulipes, then turn right into the alley leading to the Chapelle Saint-Oual (or Saint-Tual) and its fountain.

(11) Retrace your steps and continue right along Rue des Tulipes until you reach a crossroads near the Hortensias campsite. Turn right and go round the campsite.

(12) Turn left into Rue de Kernbernez and follow the road to the right until you reach a small road on the left.

(13) Turn onto this south-westerly road and continue until you reach a three-way junction just before an aerial.

(14) Turn right, cross a small stream and pass through the hamlet of Kerinvarc’h.

(15) At the end of the hamlet, turn left and follow the road leading to the sewage treatment plant.

(16) Turn right to walk alongside the lagoons, cross a road at a small roundabout and continue straight ahead to reach the Penn al Lann nature reserve car park (S/E).

Notes

(7): toilets at the Place Suzanne Masson car park.

Alternative route: between (5) and (8), the GR® follows the coastline intermittently due to private property encroaching on the coastal strip. It is possible to continue in places along the top of the beach at low tide, but progress is more difficult. However, beach access points allow you to rejoin the GR® whenever you wish.

A very pleasant route; not very busy for a Saturday in May, but the weather, whilst not rainy, wasn’t very sunny either! No difficulties, no steep slopes – a very pleasant stroll
